Enjoyed out of a 12 oz brown bottle with an "enjoy by" date of Nov 28, 2013 etched into bottle near the neck. Poured into the IPA-specific glass from Speigelau. Consumed on 11/20, so this review is written from my tasting notes and photos.

Appearance - Standard pour yields a rocky beige two-finger head with significant pocking as the bubbles slowly start to burst. Retention is excellent, and when the foam does start to recede, it leaves ample sheets of lacing with sparse gaps. The body is a deep ruby amber color, with notes of maroon and burgundy, and an orange skin colored highlight where the light passes through.

Smell - Malted grain, molasses, caramel malt and a healthy dose of hop characteristics from both the earthy and citrus sides of the aroma family. However, I can't help wonder if the aroma would be a little more pungent (in a good way) if I wasn't consuming this bottle a mere week from the "best by" date. As it is, the grain bill is the headliner to me.

Taste - Here, the malt is more present, with notes of burnt caramel, brown sugar, fresh pumpernickel, and yet somehow so are the hops. The taste is more aggressive on both fronts than the smell was. Grapefruit and citrus zest, although they are subdued, likely from the time passed between bottling and opening. Either way, this is a very balanced IPA, rather than a hop bomb. Not to my preference, but well within the style.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with some light chewiness and carbonation level that is fairly low, but still detectible and enough to provide a consistent head throughout the enjoyment of the beverage. Semisweet finish.

Overall, a solid brew, but not one I'm likely to go out of my way to grab again. That being said, I tend towards the more West Coast style IPAs, so this one just isn't to my personal preference. However, I would encourage anyone who is a fan of big, meaty IPAs to pick up a bottle.

Had at Chickee's and Pete's during a rained out Phillies game. Paired with seafood, mussels - white with garlic... Nice local beer. Dark body... Deep amber, small white head, less than a finger. Smell-hopolicious!
And tasted the same... Crisp tight and well worth the wait.

amber color, floral hop aroma and good amount of bitterness on the taste. well balanced, solid malty backbone. pretty perfectly balanced IPA and one of the most consistently decent ones out there. wouldn't take it over a lot of others but its always available and fresh

Pours clear deep amber, striking for an IPA with a sepia head, rocky, 2 and a half digits high. Brilliant rings of lacing down the glass.

Nose is a bit muted but a good waft of citrus and grapefruit hops with a solid malty backing and a spicy note. The malt bill here is in full force, reminds me alot of a hoppy American red ale.

Even with the ever evolving world of IPAs changing perception of taste it's still a assault of hops on the palate. Not hugely bittering but large amounts of tart grapefruit and pine resin. The malts are a big player, caramel, bready and a solid balance, somewhat spicy. Dries rather well despite the darker malts.

Good carbonation and body, the malts kept a bit of sticky sweetness on the finish, I think this could finish a little crisper and less grainy.

Despite its presence in the Victory line-up for such a long time it's still extraordinary, I'll take it when I can find it. I love the darker malt bill and still in my top 10 when I can get it fresh.

Best by 5/9/14. The best buy date is borderline microscopic. What the hell, Victory. What the hell.

A: Pours a fairly dark copper. This one seems more like an amber than a pale. Finger and a half off white head. Good retention. Good lacing. Carbonation is moderate.

S: Very bready in the nose. Dark, biscuity quality. Hops are present, leading to a slight floral edge with a big shot of fruitiness. Mostly stone fruit, with some berry characteristics.

T: Starts off with the rich copper malts. Again, doughy and biscuity like. Hops take over mid palate and shoot up a quick. Big burst of key lime and kumquat. Finishes with a nice, almost peppery/ginger note that carries through into the aftertaste. Takes a turn for the resinous, but the malt balances it wonderfully. Hints of lemon and pine in the finish. The malts give the citric taste an almost candied quality. Finishes fairly dry, and amazingly fruity.

M: Medium bodied. Carbonation is in no way distracting. Even comes off as slightly creamy.

O: Very, very good. I think I still prefer the hop monster west coast IPA's, but this one can hold its own with anybody. Great nose and truly exceptional flavor.
