A bit dryer and crisper than on-tap, the clarity is a shade clearer but still hazy with a frothy sticky head. Quite aromatic with lots of semi-coarse hop, lightly toasted grain alcoholic esters. The flavour is a mirror image of the aroma with lots of hops in the bitterness and flavour. I prefer it on draft though, probably because I usually drink it our of a 32oz mug at Bukowski’s Tavern.

12oz brown bottle with a very cool label ... it's a devil face made out of hop leaves.

Appearance: Hazy orange/copper beer with a patchy cream off-white foam head that clings to the sides of the glass.

Smell: Very pronounced grapefruit hop aromas, spicy with background sweet malts and a faint bready grain aroma.

Taste: Whoa! This is one bold, dangerous and outrageous beer! Mouthfeel is ultra-smooth and creamy with a malty thick full-body. The initial taste is an absolute hop assualt on the palate! A spicy, stinging and salty plethora of citric nuances literally overwhelm the senses. Earth, leaf and grass flavours pull-thru, then are followed by an alcohol presence and spiciness. The malt in this beer is definately present but gets its ass fiercly kicked by the hops. Malt includes some toasted, slightly bready and light honey flavours with an even malt sweetness. It hardly balances the beer, but does keep it somewhat control. Beer finishes with residual hop spice and malt sweetness, which tends to linger for some time.

Notes: This is a very hyped-up beer, and it should be as it is an absolutely marvelous beer for all the hop-heads out there, albeit very daunting for those who are not into hops to the extreme. For what it is, it's crafted to near perfection. A "Wow!" beer for sure. 6.7 % abv.

12oz. bottle poured into pub glass.

*Re-reviewed based on more recent experience* Reviewed on 7/26/2014. Bottled just barely 2 week prior to drinking.

A: A hazy copper color that's deep in the middle, but lighter around the sides. A large, frothy cream-colored head sits on top and retains for quite a long time before deflating to a pinky-thick head that sticks around until the end. Lots of thick, sticky lacing left all down the glass.

S: Lots of pine resin with a very forward citric zest. A little bit of alcoholic spice comes through. There's not a whole lot of sweetness to be found here. Very earthy, very hoppy. Very nice.

T: The initial bitter characteristics are rather merciless, no doubt a result from how fresh this batch is. The hops have not yet been tamed by time and absolutely dominate your palette with little mercy spared by the honey-like sweetness that creeps in the background. As the beer swishes through your mouth, some earthy, pine resin, and grassy notes sneak in and compliment the prominent grapefruit/orange profile. A little spice from the alcohol lingers in the end, along with some hop bitterness. Flavors flow wonderfully along the spectrum, ranging from bitter, to semi-sweet, to spicy.

M: Viciously smooth with a thick, creamy body. A light carbonation slightly tingles the tongue, but keeps things very subtle and gentle, which really allows those wonderful flavors to shine. A bit of tingling in the throat from the alcohol reminds you that this is no light lager, but this one is oh-so-drinkable and goes down easy. No need to alter this section; HopDevil benefits from a consistent mouthfeel.

O: HopDevil was, and currently is still, my go-to local beer. I drink it several times a month and could probably pick it out of a line-up in my sleep. I decided that now's a good time to update my review, as this is the freshest batch I've ever tasted (basically snagged the six pack right off the truck). You would think that my score would diminish, having been exposed to so many more incredible beers since my initial review, but that's not the case here. HopDevil remains consistently remarkable. It's one of the few IPAs I've had that come dangerously close to DIPA territory in terms of flavor. Boisterous hops provide a wonderfully complex display of juiciness, bitterness, and Earthiness, with a lingering spice in the finish. To me, this is a humble, yet world-class IPA that might just be Victory's magnum opus.

From a bottle into a pilsner glass. Bought this bottle yesterday couldn't wait to crack it.

A: deep gold with a burnt orange hue. Not much light penetration. Little head and no lace to speak of. I can see the carbonation rising rapidly in the glass.

S: pungent hops with light citrus aroma on the tail end.

T: bitter and hoppy from start to finish. The citrus smell carries over to lemon notes mixed with those hops.

M: fantastically smooth for such a bitter bomb in flavor. I could drink this all day.

O: I find myself wondering how I waited so long to pick this up and give it a try. If you an IPA/DIPA drinker this is a must try.
