I have spent some time, effort and money tasting beer. This ale is the one I always return to.

The head is a nice two fingers that slowly works its way back into the body of the beer as you let the ale breathe. The color is a redish amber and the carbonation trails are a sight to behold.

The smell is a floral, piney scent. Best sampled after poured and settled.

The mouthfeel is just right. Not too much carbonation which can cause a burning sensation. This ale is smooth to the palate and leaves a nice after taste. No stale beer breath with this brew.

This beer is a great beer for drinking with good friends and family. Everyone that I have introduced to this ale went out the next day and bought a case. In fact I shared a bottle with my local distributor owner and he now carries Hopdevil for those of us that crave a hoppy experience. (856 characters)

Appearance: Caramel amber huge creamy off white head leaves evenly strewn rings of lacing. Aroma: Buttery cascades caramel covered whole hops great aromatics. Balance is what makes this beer works so well that smack of hops with a great sweet bready smelling malt backbone. Taste: INSANE, great tasting beer very much heavenly mixture the hops are accented by the cask serving type the warmth of the beer with the creamy texture carries the flavor so well. If you love this beer on draught and the bottle find it on cask well worth you beer hunting. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied creamy texture so hop resins gliding along the palate. Drinkability: Freakin' amazing, simply effortless to enjoy. (689 characters)

I really thought this was a kick ass ale...It is what is says: hoppy. It has a nice amber color with a small, slightly creamy head. The head was a bit more constructed in the cask bier I had as opposed to the bottled versions. The aroma and taste were thoroughly dominated by hops, hops, and more hops. Goes down well and leaves a lingering hop aftertaste. (356 characters)

Poured from bottle into a snifter.

Appearance - oh man what a delicious looking beverage to consume on this glorious St. Patty's Day! A beautiful red-orange color with a two finger white head that is lasting quite awhile.

Smell - citrusy! Seriously smells like I'm smelling a fresh cut grapefruit or orange. These hops are crushing my nostrils and I'm loving it.

Taste - a great hoppy, flavorful beer. What a nice ale.

Mouthfeel - bien!

Overall - one of Victory's best offerings. I truly enjoy this beer and would recommend to hop lovers everywhere. (554 characters)

I've had this both bottle and tap. I have equally enjoyed both but found the bottle to be fresher, more likely than not a serving issue on the establishment with the tap.

Clear dark amber fluid pours out a nice head. Hop aroma hits the nose like a boxer going in for the kill caramel backs it up. Bitterly and menacingly flavorful, more hops than a gaggle of rabbits. I don't know of another beer that is more possessed by the hop spirit than this one. Dry bitter but thick full body that maintains as well ‘till the end.

Hoptopia for the hop heads. (557 characters)

12 oz brown bottle.

Creamy off white head that drifts slowly to the sides. Strong lacing throughout the glass. Hazy yet glowing burnt orange in color.

A variety of hop aromas including: pine, heavy hop oils, and a bit of citrus. The hop aromas are very juicy with a slight burnt smell.

A mouthful of hops is the best way to describe the taste. A touch of citrus and dark fruit hints come out from the hops. Great hop flavor! A great burnt bitterness in the aftertaste along with a slight, warming alcohol presence.

Very smooth alcohol flavor. This is a hefty IPA on the palate, but if you want big hop flavor this is what you need to sacrifice. Well balanced in terms of the variety of flavors on the palate.

A solid session IPA at 6.7% abv. Heaven for a hophead (or should I say hell for a hopdevil?). One of the most flavorful and strong IPA's out there. Actually borders a Double IPA. Very tough to improve on this style. (938 characters)

oh my...

pours a lovely medium reddish amber. head can be well developed but only if you pour properly, and lace really sticks around.

there's this aroma of fresh fruit or flowers, but also a sweet malt background.

the carbonation gives a smooth mouthfeel, almost silky when swallowed.

the taste - oh, how do i describe it!?? the main thing i have been impressed by, every time i've been drinking it, is how balanced the hops are with the malt, even though the hops are very prominent. they play off each other really well. i've had this with spicy sichuan chinese, an italian ciabatta/prosciutto sandwich, danish blue cheese, salt&vinegar potato chips, burritos, etc. everything seemed to go great with it, lol

i know some hopheads have been slightly disappointed, since there is "hop" in the name, after all. but hey, this is "just" an IPA! nowadays, i think a hophead has to go for the double-IPA's instead, in order to get their fix, no? (946 characters)

Victory Brewing beers are new to the Texas market and I was quite excited to try them after all the great things I've heard about the beer. Pours a dark amber with a foamy head that dissipates relatively quickly, but retains a thin white layer down to the bottom of the glass. A spicy floral aroma and flavour, but with only a moderate bitterness. Very delicious and certainly one of my favourite IPA's. (403 characters)

Hand-pump draft at the London Grill. Pours a deep copper color with a creamy head poured off to about 1/2 " that that disappeared everywhere but to the edges & stuck to the pint glass the whole way down. Aroma is hoppy (duh!) with a surprising amount of malt. Taste is a wallop of piney, grapefruity hops in the beginning that totally gives way to malt in the middle, then reappears again on the swallow. Smooth, medium mouthfeel. The taste of hops will coat your tongue long after the last sip is gone. Overall: FANTASTIC!!! I'm not a hop-head, but I love this beer. The hops are strong, but not overpowering, and I get my malt fix in the middle. Victory's usual standard of excellence is met fully on this one!! (713 characters)

Bottle dated "enjoy by 15 May 09," which was about two weeks ago. I'm not too concerned.

Pours a copper-amber into my pint glass. Little head that quickly fades to a thin layer of foam on top, some lacing. Detect a pleasant smell of hops, floral, and some sweeter citrus notes.

Taste is bold like an IPA should be, but surprisingly complex. Some bread, then the floral hops with their bitterness, with a malty back end that has the citrus I expected from the smell. Maybe a hint of a roasted flavor, or is that the beer showing its age and giving me weird, off tastes? Moderate carbonation is not distracting, very smooth.

Easily a session beer. Its complexity shines through because the hops, though present in a hefty dose, are not overpowering to the palate. (764 characters)

Best by date: April 29th, 2012---Yes--this should be fresh!

A: Pours a very nice burnt orange color that produced very little head.

S: Outstanding! Grapefruit, pine with some nice earthy, musty undertones.

T: Similar to the smell. Lots of citrusy grapefruit and earthy notes. Quite balanced with a nice bit of malt shining through.

M: Very smooth, medium carbonation, but a bit more body than a typical IPA (which this is not!)

O: A beautiful beer. Smells awesome, tastes great, not really overwhelmingly bitter, but just enough to get a nice alpha acid fix. Will enjoy again, and again, and... (599 characters)

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Orange-amber brew with blonde highlights that a sold, white, one-finger head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lace and leaves a great trail down the whole glass.

S: Huge pine and citrus hops overwhelm the nose. Every sip is as hoppy as the last.

T: Loads of malt sweetness hit you up front followed by the grassy, citrusy hops. Slightly spicy and smooth finish. Alcohol is present by masked by the hops.

M: Medium body and thin carbonation

O: This beer rocks! Thoroughly enjoyed every sip of this brew. Great balance between the hops and malt. (611 characters)

Very intimidating. I have within the past year developed a taste for hoppy beers, that taste turned to love. This beer is over the top hoppy, I can't imagine what my tongue would've done when I first started drinking beer. This is very strongly flavored of grapefruit, pine, and spice, with very little malt (it may just be buried under all of those hops). Be ready for an experience if you are new to IPA's.

P.S. I had another one of these at cellar temp (my other samle was fridge temp). It definitely has an even stronger flavor, if that was possible. Definitely tastes more juicy and spicy. Try both, (607 characters)

Three pints from cask at Zeno's. Wow. The cask really does wonders to this stuff. There is a glorious thick off-white head that persists forever. Below the everlasting head, this beer is a fantastic opaque dark amber color. Smell is all hops- spicy and citrusy and pretty much the same as the stuff from a bottle. Tastes fantastic. Hops hit hard and persist throughout. The difference is that it just tastes a bit more complex and untamed than normal hopdevil. I must say that what really stikes me about this beer more than anything else is the mouthfeel- heavy and creamy and just fantastic. Perhaps the best mouthfeel of any beer I've tried. Pretty drinkable- addictive really, as the fact that I had three pints demonstrates. Wonderful stuff. (746 characters)

pours vigorous, laces insanely...clear amber with a head that settles to a think veneer after 5 minutes or so.

super floral punch in the nose...like being horsewhipped with a garland of hops and blackeyed susans...! there is ALOT going on here. herbal twangs of...LEMONGRASS? i thought there was something Thai going on here...surprised i got that sense and recognized it so quickly. i feel like i am about to eat some Tom Gha.

(another later smell reveals, pleasantly, something like the smell when you go into a bicycle store...new rubber tires?)

hoppy, bitter, slight malty flavor that isn't quite as complex as the nose (initially), but this is supreme stuff for sure. very well balanced, the maltiness finally asserts as it fades on the sides of the tongue. i would actually expect and like this to be creamier...chewier...yet, for it's crispness, it becomes that more drinkable...5.0 for most hopsters i imagine, but still, for all it's 'thinness' and moderately higher ABV, this isn't quite a session brew. it's got too much character to want to be slammed without being appreciated on a nice cool spring or fall day...

and yes, LEMONGRASS!

also, creaminess not noted earlier came forward as it warmed.

an A+ beer for sure (1,236 characters)

The appearance is amber with a nice head and lacing. The beers smells sweet with hops and a hint of the malt. The initial taste is strong with the hops, but the overall beer takes away most of the shock. Although I am a hophead and it may shock people who do not enjoy strong hops flavor. The taste, as I said, is hoppy, but some sweet additions seem to tone it down. The beer is very drinkable and I was glad I was in Philly this weekend to try it. (454 characters)

Cloudy bronze, short light tan head
Hops and spice in the aroma, the hops follow through to the taste, and the spice is there in a minor amount, citrus and unripened green apple.
Medium-full body - the malt isn't overpowered, finishes dry and leaves you looking for the next one.
Drinkability - well I love IPAs and I eat grapefruits and lemons like other people would apples, this is about as good as it can get for me.
This is good in the bottle as well, but draft is better, smoother and more balanced. (509 characters)

A - Dark golden reddish brown color, good head and retention as well as lacing down the glass.

S - HOPS!! Wonderful.

T - The hops hit you hard at first, then followed by some hints of malts, and finishes with a spicy kick. Not really balanced, but the hops are outstanding!

M - Great, not overly carbonated, not watery, feels like beer should.

D - I could drink a few of these, not a party beer by any means, but a could throw em back at the same time.

IF YOU LIKE HOPS, TRY THIS BEER. Great beer, full of hops, good quality. If you like other pale ales this is one to try. (579 characters)

A- An amber color with a nice white head. Lacing all the way down the glass.

S- I can smell grassy floral hops all the way with a hint of crystal malts.

T- Sweet buscuity malts quickly give way for the hops to power on through. Grassy hops go hand and hand with the bitter twang of this IPA. Tons of bitter that provide a clean crisp dry finish.

M- Medium amount of carbonation and body. Really smooth and satisfying.

D- This is a beer I could drink all night long being alittle bit of a hophead.

Notes: This is by far one of, if not my overall favorite IPA out there. (573 characters)

Dark amber pour with a medium sized off white head. The power is in the spices here, big spicy flavor right up front fading to a hoppy finish in the back end. Also one of the best smelling IPAs I've ever had. A glorious winner all around, all hail Victory! (256 characters)

The great thing about reviewing beers on websites like this is the compulsory tastings that you've had before but must "force" yourself through again...bought a nice sampler for my son's baptismal afterparty... the guests were pleased...solid one-finger head holds well...a controlled hops explosion to the nostrils, among fresh-cut grass, a fresh-cut cigar and the M&M factory for smells that entrance...vivacious and smooth despite the IPA status...crisp, demanding yet not overstated as other American IPAs can often invade the senses with militaristic carelessness...either the Cavs have me pumped or the alcohol is sneaky quick...as impressive an IPA as I could imagine...if Victory makes a beer unworthy of recognition, I haven't had it yet... (749 characters)

Oh man, I've been jonesin for a hoppy IPA that wasn't Alpha King and this baby really hit the spot. Oh man. Really good.

It pours an opaque brown. Kinda like a homebrew with chill haze, but the head. The head never leaves. Wow. Wow. It's amazing.

And the smell. Hops. Juicy, delicious hops. Oh man. That's what I've been looking for. The taste follows the smell. Resiny, spicy, and bitter bitter bitter. There is just enough malt lingering in the background to prevent the beer from being hop mouthwash, but that's it. A faint powdery finish from the bitter hops and yeah. Good stuff. Oh man.

Thanks for the experience Beerninja. This is one freakin' tastey beer. (672 characters)

I had this on cask at Copperfield's. I've had it on tap and in bottle, but the cask blew me away.
Beautiful, perfect head. The beer was a reddish copper color. Smelled peppery, but not enough there. Hoppy, too, of course. Tasted very smooth, hoppy, and a teeny tiny bit bitter. Excellent beer. (294 characters)

This is my go-to staple IPA. It is nicely balanced, great mouth-feel, soft flavors. It's called "hop devil" but I really think it is so well-balanced that the name is a bit mis-placed. Sometimes IPAs have a hoppy bite, but this is much more balanced than many others. The Bros are right with the "World Class" rating. Great beer. (334 characters)
