A- Poured into a stemless red wine goblet, beautiful red hued amber deep copper color, nice 2 full fingers of frothy caramel colored fresh head.

S- Great bitter hop aroma, nice citrus, floral, some sweet alcohol, very mild clean malty balance, some sweet caramel. A nice swirl as it warms up, really releases that buttery sweet alcohol aroma.

T- Nice bitterness, grassy, fresh, tart, malt balance, citrus, toasty butter nut, love that hop acidity.

M- Great texture, well balanced, crisp, medium texture, with a fresh, lingering bitterness on tongue.

D- A very drinkable beer for me, lingers and refreshes, clean, makes me want another each time I have one, and a great East Coast style American IPA...

Victory HopDevil Ale
bottle to glass

it's a nice dark amber color with a thick two finger off white head that leaves a decent amount of lace and keeps a thick collar to the bottom of the glass. it smells of spices, hops, and strong malts. the grapefruit/citrus of the hops is flavorful but weak. there is an ample amount of caramel malt that possibly overpowers the weak hops. the moderately full mouthfeel and high carbonation make it easil drinkable. caramel malt sticks to the palate.

this was a decent beer. i could drink it again, but it's too malty and one dimensional for my tastes in an IPA

Poured from a 12-oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a hazy brownish-orange color, very pretty and a bit different from some other IPAs I've seen. A finger of head that ran away fairly quickly, not too much lacing.

Smells interesting, too. You can definitely smell some floral hops, but also a good bit of bready/caramel malts are present. Some spiciness present there as well, though faint.

I really like this. It's bitter, alright, you sure can taste the floral hops, but this is a well-balanced brew. It kicks in with some caramel/toffee malt to add a bit more in the flavor department. I'm liking this a lot.

This beer has a medium body to it with not a lot of carbonation present. It finishes easy with a little aftertaste of hops and malt, leaving you wanting more.

I really like this IPA. It's a little heavier and bitter than some others I've had in the style, but the malty aspect that comes with the intense hop character makes me want to drink more of this. It would get you eventually, though, with that 6.7% ABV. It is delicious, though.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Orange amber pour with about two fingers of rich foam. Head retention is outstanding, and there's some quickly-falling lacing on the glass.

Aroma is a nice collection of bitter citric hops, sweet caramel malt, and a bready/grainy scent.

Well, the name HopDevil is appropriate, because the flavor profile begins and ends with bitter hops. The hop flavor is citrus peel, all the way, so it really actually tastes less like a citrus fruit, and more like that herbal piney bitterness. The bitterness is unfortunately quite harsh, and fairly unpleasant. I'm not sure what happened after that delightful nose.

Body is medium-full. Somewhat crisp, dry finish. The finger or so of foam that remains throughout aids HopDevil's creaminess.

The only previous time I had tasted this beer was a 2 oz sample at a fest, and I remembered that I didn't like it, but I had consumed enough previous samples that I couldn't remember what about it I didn't like. Now I remember. An IPA can be very hoppy, and very bitter, while still being flavorful and tasty. HopDevil misses that mark.

ap. dark golden coppery brown w/ a decent head that hangs for a bit. Some lacing, but nothing too outstanding.
sm. A slight caramel initially, then hops and citris. Some bready aroma as well.
ta. Follows the smell with mostly grapefruit and a seriously tart finish. To me it's a fairly well balanced hoppy beer. Maybe I've had too many IPA's...that possible?
mf. Nice carbonation, smooth.
dr. Easy, easy, easy. Good stuff.

12oz. Brown Bottle. Pint Glass

A: Cloudy orange with one finger light tan creamy head. After the head recedes it leaves a great amount of sticky lacing all over the glass.

S: Aroma is mostly citric with orange and grapefruit. Bread grains and sweet malts.

T/M: This is one hoppy freakin brew. Spicy but crisp and smooth. I'd say full bodied. There are malts but they are very subdued and don't do much to balance the beer out. This is really all Hops. Once the brew warms up a little I can taste the alcohol, which is warming.

D: One great Hop brew. I love IPA's and this really does it for me. I could drink many, many of these. Thanks Victory!

Cheers!!!

Picked this up based on store posted Beer Advocate ratings.

A: This beer looked good, a little cloudy, but rich in color.

S: This beer smells like it advertises. Very strong hops.

T: This beer is all hops. Some may dig that, and I do normally, but there wasn't any balance in this beer. It was all bitter hops.

M: Hopdevil left a bitter taste in my mouth for hours after drinking it. I almost wanted to drink something else to clear.

D: I can only do one of these in a sitting. To much bitterness. A touch of sweetness to balance this would make it amazing!

Arrived in a standard bar shaker glass a little on the cold side. The ale appears a hazed golden apricot color with about a finger of dense, lingering foam that grew a bit once it had some room in the glass. Nice lacing left behind. Flavors and aromas consist of white grapefruit juice and pith, resinous pine, toasted sweet bread, and caramel. A bit slick with a medium to full body and adequate carbonation. Very easy going down from the tap.

This is a great example of the style from Victory, which is also why it's a medal winner I would assume.

Appearance- Light reddish or amber in color. The head is big and fluffy at first but dies down within a few minutes. Lacing isn't really anything special, but not bad.

Smell- Hops!! Nice pine and grapefuit notes to be detected.

Taste- Wonderful hop taste. Almost over-powering but the crisp clean finish suprised me. Made me want another sip almost instantly. Couldn't detect much malt at all, they don't call it Hop Devil for nothing.

mouthfeel- The hops can sometimes leave a prickly feeling on the palate, but once I got used to that I loved the experience. It has a nice medium body, not too heavy. Almost sessionable if it weren't for the higher ABV.

Tasted on October 2nd, 2009.

Coming back from my trip to Trenton, NJ and having tasted the tap version of this one, I could wait to taste the bottle version.

The beer is amber color with a nice head formed up with big bubbles. The aroma is more pronounced, I still get hops. The aroma is citrus and piny. The bottle version has a better smell IMO. The taste is pretty good, however it is more intense than the tap version. Very dry finish and the bitterness is so good. I very good beer from Victory. They know how to brew good beers for me.

Cheers!

(i have tried this many times from the tap and the bottle, and the beer has never disappointed, yet never astounded me...until i had it from a cask...)

Poured a nice copper brown, with two fingers of off-white head and very good lacing. The smell was wonderfully balanced between maltiness/molasses and hop bitterness, with very subtle hints of grapefruit and pine. The flavor was much more intense, with a near-perfect split between malt and hops, dissolving to a dry finish. Creamy mouthfeel, with little carbonation likely the result of the cask. Very sessionable ipa.

Picked up a single for $1.99. Best By Nov. 29 09

So much for the 'pale' part of India Pale Ale. More of a burnt orange, copper color appearance. A nice foam of head that leaves some light scattered lacing.

Smells like burnt toast, old pine trees, talcum powder. Nothing really floral or grapefruit-y here.

Taste is just intense pine tree sap, spicy herbal-ness, warm grapefruit juice. No real sweetness here, just that intense dry after taste from the hops that is really unappealing.

I think the beer is too unbalanced for my tastes. Glad I only bought a single.

this beer pours a copper color with a thin off white head that recedes to a thin lace rather quickly. the aroma presents a huge amount of hop aroma, not leaving much room for the malts at all the taste follows with a lot of pine and a bit of malt up front, and then a huge amount of bitterness at the end. the medium body a good co2 make this a really drinkable beer and one of the most frequent six packs in my fridge.

I drank this from the bottle into a chalice.

It pours a light amber with a decent white head that lasts about 1 minute, light lacing.

The smell is all hops, nothing else on the nose.

The taste is ok, nothing but hops again. Not a great finish. Pretty drinkable.

This beer is extremely over-rated. It smells and looks good, but the flavor is so unbalanced. Left me with a dry mouth feel. I'm glad someone gave it to me and I didn't buy the six pack.
I love IPA's but I prefer a balanced taste like a 90 min DFH.

This beer pours a beautiful clear deep copper/amber color with a one finger of off-white thick frothy head to it. I've not seen an IPA as dark as this. Head retains very well and leaves nice thick sticky lacing on the glass. Nose even has bite in it - floral and grassy hops dominate the nose. Taste is all bitter floral hops in the front blended nicely with some caramel malts in the middle and finish with a nice bite of pine and citrusy hops in the finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, nice crisp body to this beer with a clean, dry finish. A great IPA to sit with for a bit.

This is a great session IPA with a pretty nice 7% abv as well. This is one of those balanced IPA's that come off as nicely hoppy with a good dab of malt in the middle. Hops bring pine and floral notes as well as a nice grapefruit and orange character in the aroma and taste. Nice dark color to the beer compared to other IPA's. Great example.

A: Has a redish, amber apperance to it. Minimal to no head. The lacing is very apparant and continues to stick to the glass as you drink it.

S: Has a very hoppy and wheat smell. the smell is not to over powering, but it is still noticable.

T-M: Has a spicy hops taste. The taste is bitter and kind of sweet. Kind of like a less potent hop slam beer.

D: The beer goes down very smooth. Leaving you with the sensation of satisfaction.

Victory HopDevil IPa. 6.7% alcohol.

A- Pours a radiant hued amber-orange colored fluid with light quarter inch head that falls into mild frothy ring around glass. Leaves excellent stick lacing on rim of glass.

S- Fresh grass, citrus, grapefruit, light malt and a small dose of alcohol on the nose. Very revitalizing to the scenses.

T-M- First is a well balanced citrusy hop bite with even malt flavor. Second is a mild bitter bomb to the tongue and mouth that tends to stick around for awhile. Great finish with light carbonation that allow the beer to roll back with no problem at all. Some danky hops are leftover after swallowed but pleasent bitterness.

D- I could drink the hell out of this beer! excellent balance and flavor make this one a winner. Bro approved... chasebrownyeah1

Poured into a pint glass orange color with a thick off white head. Ok lacing. Smell isn't too terribly strong. The taste has a nice hop bite upfront that balances out very nice. In fact, the hops kinda burned my lips because of the BBQ I was eating along with it. Overall, this is a very good AIPA with no bad aftertastes.

A- slightly transparent amber color with a slight off white two finger head. light to medium lacing.

S- alil fruity (not hoppy grapefruit) for an ipa.

T- nothing to crazy. as an ipa i would expect more of a hop attack and for this one it's kinda light. still good tho.

M- light bodied. nice carbonation.

D- very good. prolly drink a whole 6 no problem.

Overall- start off negative.... for the name hop devil i was expecting more of a hop attack. other then that it's pretty good. i would say this is a good ipa to those who aren't crazy about a heavy hop load like bell's two hearted and what not. i give it a thumbs up no prob.

This is an excellent IPA, flavourful and hoppy in character, yet fairly balanced sweetness and bitterness, the bitterness just having the edge.

Red amber, it has a medium large, off-white head with orange highlights, slowly shrinking to a lasting, foamy, even head and a little bit of weak lace.

Aroma is citrus (caramleised orange peel, candied orange, a little grapefruit but not much); fairly rich with caramel, some toast, light raisininess, flowery and juicy with fresh plum.

The taste is clean, leafy-spicey-citrsuy hops with candied, slightly burnt orange, yeasty dough underneath, some mineral. It's slightly oily sweet and bitter with the bitterness just dominant.

Had this in Atlantic City at the Borgata in the Fornelletto restaurant. Menacingly delicious, with the powerful, aromatic punch of whole flower American hops backed up by rich, German malts. HopDevil Ale offers a roller coaster ride of flavor, coasting to a smooth finish that satisfies fully.

Pours copper, orange lightly brownish in colour. Probably one of the darkest IPA I've tasted so far. Beautiful off-white head, looks almost creamy!

At opening, their's an immediate nose of grapefruit and during pouring, a pungent, floral aroma of hops. Unfortunately nose remains quite unidimensional after opening.

Mouth is not very pronounced (or as pronounced as expected). Of course, citrus flavours are abundant but not overwhelming. Grapefruit, pink grapefruit to be more precise, dominates all the flavours. Zest of lemon. Lightly piny not too resinous. Good carbonation. Aftertaste is a bit tart and acid. Hops are lengthy on tongue...

Finally, expectation where high for this beer and I'd say that I'm a bit disappointed. Did I score a bit low (?), maybe! It's a good IPA, but was expecting something more opulent and complex. A bit more malt to give more structure and balance would be welcome.

Reviewing this beer out of the victory sample pack. The bottle didn't have any date on it, but the 12 pack said best by 12/20/09

Pours a light, reddish amber, with a slight haze. The head on a straight pour is perfectly fluffy and large.

Aroma is interesting, and not really typical of the IPA's I'm used to. It's slightly fruity, with pine, wood, and a bit of earth. While it has a good hop character, the hops used seem to be different from the West Coast "C" hops I'm used to in an American IPA, and if I were to guess, I'd say they aren't in this beer at all, as I'm not picking up much citrus. Moderatly strong aroma, I wish it was just a bit stronger.

Flavor has some slight, candy like sweetness along with some herbal hoppiness. The lack of a very strong hop presense in the aroma seems to lessen the hop flavor. Bitterness is there, and it's quite strong. Nice bitter character from start to finish.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly dry for an amber colored, 6.7% IPA. Drinkability is about what I'd expect for an IPA, it's not something I could sip all night but it makes for a pleasant pint.

Overall, this is a decent East coast IPA but nothing to go crazy about. I'm impressed with the different aroma, which makes it stand out from most IPAs. I just wish this was more potent in hop flavor and aroma, and maybe I'd be more impressed with a week old keg than a 2 month old bottle.
