Went to the a little release party for victory in Indiana at Rich O's tonight in New Alabany and had a flight of Prima Pils, Hop Devil, and Golden Monkey.

Was a clear carmel brown color and had a nice floral smell. Like the smell, it tasted of aromatic flowers and had a lingering hop bitterness. Smooth and creamy, a good, well-rounded beer.

Served from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Poured a perfect pale ale golden red color with pillowy head. Unfortunately, it fades quickly and leaves almost no lacing.

The aroma is nice and hoppy and the taste is as well. There is a lot of citrus and spice but what really stands out for me is the orange flavors. It reminds me of orange blossoms, actually! Well balanced too - not overly hoppy or bitter like some american IPAs.

Mouthfeel is appropriate for an india pale and it's got drinkability because it doesn't crush your taste buds with hops.

Probably one of Victory's best year-round brews.

Pours amber to red in color with an off-white head that has some staying power. Some lace is left behind as the head falls adding to the appearance. Muted fruity hop aroma; this must be an older bottle. Hop flavor is still fairly bright. Bitterness is somewhat less than I expected or remembered from a previous tasting. Mouthfeel is about right; slightly full. There's a bit of tannin from somewhere that dries out the tongue a bit. The hop flavor is rather interesting...I can't quite place it, but I'm going with grapefruit and it's a fairly strong flavor. There's a candy-like sweetness there, too, no doubt from the caramel malts that also give the beer it's color. By the time I'm half way through this beer there's rings of Brussels lace left behind. Nice. The aroma has opened up a bit and is a touch perfume or talc like; or dusty. Finish is a bit quick, at least in terms of bitterness, but hoppiness lingers. This is a good beer, but almost a pale ale by contemporary hop head standards.

A - Cloudy orange, amber color. Nice creamy head that doesn't totally go away.

S - Sweet malts, hops, hops

T - For a name like Hop Devil, I was expecting more hops. Typical IPA here, but bitter than most.

M - On the heavy side, somewhat sticky

D - Decent drinkability

A decent IPA, not my favorite. Thanks to Tbn2 for trading this brew for me to try.

A. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Somewhat cloudy dark gold/orange in hue. A nice head appears and retention is good. Leaves behind some spotty lacing.

S. Some earthy hops and some malt.

T. Absolutely splendid. Alot going on here as well. Floral hops in the forefront with a caramel malt backbone that is very delicious. Despite being an IPA, this is not overly hoppy. Very well balanced indeed.

M. Medium bodied, perfect level of carbonation. Smooth and delightful to the palate.

D. Very drinkable despite the high ABV. Cheers!

I am yet to have a product from Victory that I didn't like--at least to some degree. The Hop Devil Ale is certainly no exception. Although the hops were a little subtle and less pronounced than I would have liked; I would definitely recommend this beer to friends. It is also attractively priced.

It had an excellent pour and very good head retention. The mouth feel and drinkability were also right on par. The alcohol level and purchase price make this a beer that can be enjoyed regularly and in large quantities.

The hop rate however is where this brew stumbles a bit. With a name like Hop Devil, I expected it to be aggressively hopped and to have a profound hop presence; this is where this beer fell a little short.

All things considered, this is a fine beer, and I would without doubt recommend this to fellow enthusiasts.

This bottle was about two weeks shy of it's "enjoy by" date. Poured into a weizen glass. Appearance is a golden amber color with a fluffy, 2 finger light beige head that fell away quickly. The aroma was fresh and citrusy, with some grassy and lemon notes in there. The taste was brisk hoppiness, in keeping with the style, with a lingering sourness.
What I liked best about this beer was the mouthfeel - lovely, smooth and rich!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. 06/19/08.

Pours a reddish orange color with about a finger and a half of soft beige head. The head dissipated slowly, leaving lots of lacing around the glass. Aromas of hops, sweet malts, and more hops.

Taste is more hops, just like the aroma. Lots of piny and citrus hops. Slight caramel taste. Very bitter finish. Not overly hoppy, but good for an IPA.

Feel is slightly thick, with a medium-full body and slightly high carbonation. Doesn't leave any stickiness in the mouth though, it's pretty clean. Drinkability is alright. It's a bit heavy for an IPA, but other than that there's nothing really wrong with it.

A bit on the darker spectrum for an IPA, great head, okay lacing.

Smell & taste are full blown AIPA, extremely inviting.

Taste is wonderful, total hop blast, but not too bitter where it is detracting.

This slid down really fast and didn't leave me with an over the top bitterness that I wanted to wash away. One was not enough. This is a very solid IPA.

Pours a pale bronze with a nice 1/8" of creamy tan head. tons of creamy lacing and sticking.

OMG this is beer? Super faint, almost non existant aroma. There is some faint hints of apple, pear and a hint of melon.

The flavor is also a bit thin. This is a far cry from what I remembered this beer to be. This beer ought to be called Hop Angel but, that's to angelic. This beer is decent not more.

It feels thin for an IPA. Reminds me of a basic IPA. Surpiring. I remember this beer being a lot more hoppy.

This beer is as drinkable as a glass of water. Yum but what happend to the hops?

I bought a couple of bottles of Hop Devil in a beer shop. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours an amber bronze color, and is slightly hazy. Dark for an American IPA. Decent off-white head has some resiliency, and laces the glass nicely.

The smell is sweet and earthy. There is a sweet grain aroma, and virtually none of the pine and citrus smell of most hopped up IPAs.

Taste is quite good. A blend of caramel and sweet bread flavors up front, with a mildly bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is full-bodied, slightly cloying and dry.

A drinkable IPA, more in the British style than some. Not over the top on hops, despite the name. I'd have it again, but probably not at $12 a six pack.

From a 12 oz bottle to a pint glass. Best by Aug 19 '08.

Appearance: Beautifully clear amber, darker in color than most IPAs. The head leaves a bit of wispy lace as it descends into a ring.

Smell: Earth, pine, grapefruit and caramel with some herbal notes. Unusual for the style but very nice.

Taste & mouthfeel: Juicy grapefruit, pine and bitter herbs with an earthy malt backbone. This is drier than the nose implies; sweetness is low, serving as more of a subtle undertone than a balancing element. The finish brings out a deep resiny hop flavor, though bitterness never becomes overwhelming.

Notes: Got this one from dyan - thanks! I've had this several times in the past but never fresh. Until now, that is.

I found this to be a very accessible example of the style. The hops are certainly there, as you'll notice with your nose and your taste buds, but they are not overwhelming or in your face like other IPAs.

Most impressive for me was the drinkability. I am becoming a big fan of very hoppy beers, but I find that this one strikes the perfect balance. Usually I will drink a very hoppy beer and be content for the evening, but this is one that I crave multiple of, and will definitely seek it out to have some stock on hand.

Slightly cloudy copper color with moderate carbonation. Head is rather wispy and thin.

Earthy hop scent-oily and viscous with sweet butterscotch malt tones. Alcohol provides nice balance.

Crisp hop bitterness blends nicely with malt-hops more grassy and earthy than slightly more floral nose.

Nice and clean mouthfeel with tangy citrus hop pucker from start to long finish.

Clean and very drinkable for style.

Very hard (almost too hard) pour from bottle into pint glass

A-Very lush looking. Has a deep mahogany but clear appearance. Off white head settles two fingers thick and laces all the way down. This is a perfect looking beer to me.

S-When this one hit my nose, it is instant grapefruit, almost overpowering. There is a small nuance of toasted malt as well as a small bread like smell. Very good.

T/M-Great balance! By the smell, I thought the hops were going to be overpowering. This has a perfect balance of hops and malts. Starts semi-sweet then the hops take over, but not overwhelming. Has a nice dry finish that is just about perfect. The carbonation is right on for the style.

Overall this beer is great. If you are trying to like a more hoppy beer, give this one a try. It has a larger than normal IBU rating, but doesn't kill you with hops.

Drink em' if ya got em'...

Appearance: orange opaque. Makes me wonder if it is unfilltered. excellent head at about half an inch. Wonderful lacing.

Smell: Well...HOPS. Very noticable. I'm not a big fan of beers that are overhopped, but what the hay. I'll try anything the wife brings home at least once.

Taste: Not as hoppy as the smell indicated. infact its over ballanced just enough not to be extreme. This is the main flavor however with some citrus in the after taste, as one would expect. who can complain when the name suggests the taste you get.

Clear orange-golden with a good initial head

Smell has a strong hop presence, as you might guess. Quite floral.

Chock full of oily hops. But just straight up hops, I'm not picking up much else in the mix.

Mouthfeel smooth and drinkable.

Yeah, this will cure your hop fix. But for me it was all about the hops, with nothing else. I like to see a bit more balance and depth. I'm generally a hop fan, but this got to be too much after a while.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. The aroma is sweet malt, caramel, and some floral and citrusy hops. The taste starts off smooth and malty with the citrusy hops kicking in to make a nice bitter finish. This is not an extremely bitter IPA like I was expecting from the name, but it is pretty well balanced. Overall, HopDevil is a solid IPA that is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys IPAs.

Thanks to sholland119 for hooking me up with this one!

Pours a deep reddish-orange with a creamy two-finger beige head that lasts a while and leaves some thick lacing behind.

Nose is a bit muted, but I smell some caramel malt and some floral and citrus hops.

Taste starts off bitter, but is quickly balanced with some bready malts. Some spicy floral hops and grapefruit flavor lead into a long bitter finish.

Medium-bodied, but seems almost a bit too carbonated.

Overall though, a great IPA with pretty good drinkability.

A great dark copper/redish color, with a large slightly off white head.Smells of hpos, mainly floral and citrus with a hint of honey/sweet malts as well. Carmaly malts up front with an excellent spicey hop flavor that carries the day and tingles the tongue. Dry and crisp finish. Yet to have a bad victory brew. This is another winner.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A = Clear orange-red amber, formed a one finger orange tinted off white head, decent retention, light lacing left on glass, cover of foam and bubbles remained on surface for good period of time.

S = Good assertive citrus and grassy hops smells but god balance, too, with light smells of fresh cut grains and ripening fruits including apple and pear.

T = Good simple tastes, perfect level of bitterness for an IPA, starts at front of the mouth and continues into the long bitter-dry finish, in front of mouth get mostly lemon-lime with fresh scones flavors appearing at mid-palate before resolving into the long bitter finish.

M = Medium-light body, good carbonation level that wakes up the tongue but does not overdo it, mouthcoating is about medium.

D = A very drinkable beer. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a simple, straight forward IPA.

12oz bottle obtained from a trade. This beers pours a hazy orange with about a one finger head. The head doesn't retain for very long. I thought this beer would reek of hops, but not much really jumps out at me besides a sweet smell. The bitterness in this is upfront and very prominent. Seems slightly unbalanced. Low levels of carbonation and a medium body to this. It's pretty good and I'd definitely drink it again.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

A - Amber, a little hazy, with decent 2 finger head, moderate retention and lacing.

S - Lots of piney/earthy hops with citrus in the background. Slightly sweet malt aroma.

T - A quick burst of citrus hops loaded with floral components start the taste off, but it dies suddenly into a mouth-numbing bitterness. Mid and late palate are completely dominated by bitterness with no trace of malt character. This brew's only flavor is the early onset of hops.

M - Thin to medium and fairly carbonated. Pretty much like any IPA.

D - It's not undrinkable, but I doubt I'd ever session this stuff. It's virtually flavorless and dominated by a prolonged and unnecessary bitterness; it was a bit difficult for me to get though my one bottle.

Color: Pours a decent reddish-copper color with a one-finger head that quickly fades.

Aroma: Smooth and very hoppy on the nose. Malty too.

Taste: Starts off smooth and malty and then the hop bitterness kicks in with mild citrusy notes. It's smooth and not overly bitter. Feels balanced on the tongue.

Mouthfeel: Decent hop bitterness. Good malt backbone.

Drinkability: Very drinkable for an IPA. It does remind me a bit much of an APA but the hop bitterness alone makes up for that.
