Thank you North Carolina for popping the beer alcohol limit cap. Poured a reddish oragne tint, 3 fingure light brown head with lacing. Strong hop smell. Smooth taste with a great intense hop finish. Refreshing. This is what I look for in an American IPA. Could only drink about 3 in one sitting. (295 characters)

A - A promising head that will not leave easily. Cloudy and amber.

S - Very up front, in a good way. You can certainly smell the hops, but there's something much more there.

T - Huh... that's beyond belief. Never have I had an IPA so smooth, so perfectly balanced between hops, malt and alcohol. It's a beautiful thing... it really is.

M - Fantastic. An absolutely awesome feeling.

O - BEST. IPA. EVER. Well best one that I've had, but I must say, it'll be hard to beat this one out.

Await trying it on tap some day... (523 characters)

Um, where do I start? Mr. T comes to mind because as corny as it sounds, I pity the fool who hasn't had HopDevil. I also pity the fools who have had it in the bottle and think it is anywhere remotely close to being what it is on tap. THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT BEERS. Well, not by name, but certainly by taste. The bottled one is good. Not great by a long shot. It's too over the top hoppy, which may appeal to some but not to most. It's one big pine tree, with miniminal malt and lackluster everything else. On tap, its a whole different story. Deep red brown, and tan head (not white!). MALT. Sweetness. Citrus. Faint bitterness, but not the atypical "hop flavor". Complex malt, that hides the hops initially. One sip and you may say, "Yum. Tasty. But, what the hell? Who calls this an IP----whoa!!! There they are!!" The hops are there, and they reveal their character long after the beer has been sipped and swallowed. They dance on your tounge. The malt lingers, and the hops, they bite and frolic and play dirty tricks on you. I love it. It's art. It's ectasty. It's by far the best IPA in the country if not for the skill that is takes to make the flavors interact the way they do. And its not fair to call it the same thing as what Victory is sending out to Joe Yutz in South Dakota. Come to PA for if nothing else, the Eagles and HopDevil on tap.

Cheers! (1,362 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a pint. Hazy golden-orange with a medium sticky head. Opening the bottle releases the full aroma of pine resin and grapefruit citrus, it intensifys through the pour. Nosing the glass reveals a slight vegital earthiness. The first sip hammers the mouth with hoppy spice which competes with a sweet side of citrus and burnt brown sugar. There is also a hint of yeasty rustic bread. Did I mention the deep pine burn of the hops? Crisp in the mouth, neither thin nor overly thick, the overall drinkability belies the 6.7abv. For an extreme hophead, this is a session beer. (594 characters)

Good Moogly-Googly! What a beer! Poured an amber-orange color with a beautiful head and good lacing. Very hoppy-floral aroma. Good rich mouthfeel. The taste was complex with a vicious malt vs.
hop battle waging with the ultimate winner being your tastebuds. I don't think I've had a more balanced IPA. Very drinkable, highly recommended and certainly worth seeking out. (370 characters)

A- hazy mahogany with a big thick light tan head. laces extremely well.

S- lots of citrus hops as well as pine.

T- wow this stuff is perfect here. perfect balance of hops with subtle carmel hints. hops are strong but not overpowering.

M- nice creamy body. light-medium carbonation.

D- dont sit down with a 6pack in front of you because it will be gone without you knowing it.

overall- i reviewed this over a year ago and wasnt all that impressed. but as my tastes have matured, this is now one of my favorites. dont pass this one up. (549 characters)

Originally, I did not want to review this ale, as everyone before me has done an excellent job. But with a screen name like mine, I thought I must. Cloudy, amber color, which in my opinion is the true color of beer. The head is white, frothy and lasts throughout the pint. The lace rings a perfectly spaced layer until the bottom. Your first smell is pure heaven, as there is no better aroma then that of hops. Strong but not overwhealming. The taste is so well balanced you don't know which comes first, though I know it's the hops. Nice malt taste is there, mellow, bringing up the rear as it were, again balancing the hops. Don't let the name fool you, it's hoppy, but not to the point where you are scraping your tongue. Absolutely one of my favorite beers, and a standard in the fridge all year, especially in the summer. (826 characters)

The Devil made me do it. Victory Hopdevil is a exceptional IPA,
the hoppy flavor is may be overpowering to a drinker of the big boy brews but a true beer drinker will appericate the taste of this superb beer.

The color, the taste, and the aroma will have you say
The Devil made me do it too. (297 characters)

Dark color... simliar to watered down honey. It's a light brown with hints of yellow. Nice head rises from the liquid after the pour. Loads of lacing down the glass. Plenty of hops on the nose that are very citrusy. Hint of grainy malt. There's something else that's sweet. Perhaps it's just the malt. Hops steal the show from the very beginning of the taste. They are very spicy and a tad fruity. There's really not enough malt flavor to mention. I don't give a damn though because this beer is tasty enough without perfect balance! Creamy mouthfeel with absolute bitterness in the finish. Immediately after swallowing the hops are easy and not too bad but you wait five seconds and they attack. Wow. This is a great beer. Victory has brought me so much hoppy delight lately. I feel like I should give them something in return. (828 characters)

A - Beautiful deep reddish brown hue that sets it apart from other IPAs. Head is nice and foamy but not massive, lasts a while but could be longer.

S - Very zesty floral spices.

T - Hoppy, but not as ridiculous as the name implies. The balance with smooth spice and some sweetness is tough to achieve. There is bitterness right up to the point of being almost edgy, but then it gets sweet and is smooth the whole way. Congrats.

M - Medium-bodied, sticks to the palate a good amount. You enjoy this one before, during, and after taking a sip.

D - Very drinkable due to the restrained, yet ever present, IPA hop character. Have had multiple times on draught and bottled. Will buy every now and then because it's "menacingly delicious". (737 characters)

A very good...and it does live up to it's name HopDevil. Amber color is darker then SN-pale ale, with a bit more bite on the mouth. Very hoppy indeed! The malt is very nice too, its sweetness balancing the hop bitterness. A bit of warming in the belly in the finish. Defines the true American style IPA! Cheers! (311 characters)

Poured from the bottle into an imperial pint. Freshness date says "enjoy by 22 2006" which is three months from now. I assume it is very fresh, because it is from a six pack I purchased from the Victory brewery along with a pack of Storm King Stout which says it was bottled 12/13/2005 (2 weeks ago).

The body is a deep orange/red color, much darker than other IPAs I've had. Quite cloudy. The head is very thick and foamy and leaves very nice lace down the glass.

I've had this on tap and the smell is not as full out of the bottle, but it is still sporting a rich hop and flowery aroma.

Flavor can be described in one word... intense. The name says it all, this beer is all about hops. Spicy, acidic hops dominate your mouth. The bitterness starts moderate and grows until the finish which ends even stronger than it started. Carries a slight dryness which I really enjoy.

Drinkability is near perfect. It's a very intense flavored beer, which usually is not a great thing for drinkability, but this doesn't seem to be the case here. The ABV is near perfect in my opinion at 6.7%. (1,094 characters)

Appearance: Slightly hazy but beautiful copper/amber color. The head was an off white color and not very thick, fizzled away into a ring that left very little lacing.

Smell: Strong hops smell, very citrusy. Smells fantastic.

Taste: Just as it smelled it has a strong hops flavor with some spice. Very well balanced.

Mouth feel: Very smooth and clear, not gritty or overly carbonated.

Drinkability: This is a terrific beer and easily sessionable. I will be adding HopDevil to my line up of favorite brews. (512 characters)

Had it on cask at Sunset in Allston.

Haven't had the bottled version in a while (and liked that quite a bit), but this beer is absolutely fantastic in a cask.

Poured a clear, deep golden orange, with little to no head. The scent was remarkable, hop resins, pine, citric acid, slight alcohol.

Taste was phenomenal. hoppy, but not overdone or out of balance, resinous, slightly astringent, a slight warming from the alcohol. Really, I cannot say enough good things about this.. Medium bodied, smooth, refreshing, a joy.

Drinkability, let's just say they could park my barstool next to the beer engine and I would pour this one all night. Get your ass to Sunset, even if you hate the place, because I don't know of anywhere else in boston to get this amazing beer..I'm getting thirsty just typing about it.. (820 characters)

Pours a hazy copper with 1/2" white head and moderate lacing.

Nose of Citrus fruit, sweetness from the malt

Taste is much larger than the smell. Hops all the way through start to finish, but very complex in flavor. The finish is a tea-like bitterness that sticks on the tongue for a while.

Mouthfeel is moderately thick, nothing crazy. The hops shine through and the malt sings backup.

I could drink quite a few of these bad boys in an evening. This is one tasty little devil. (498 characters)

Pours a nice orange / amber color, with a thick head. The floral nose is extremely prevelant, with hints of sweetness. Extremely well balanced, the malt and hops dance together on the tongue, producing a crisp bitterness that slowly fades after swallowing. The glass develops nice lacework as the liquid is emptied. Extremely smooth and drinkable. The consistancy of this product over the past few years has been incredible, and this is an IPA others should try to emulate. (473 characters)

Pours a deep dark amber with plenty of head and sticky lacing. Smell is sticky, citrusy, piny, grassy, green, yellow, orange, yummy and hoppy. Taste is very bitter but has lots of malt to balance. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy and resiny. Drinkability is great. (261 characters)

A - Golden-orange in color with a good amount of carbonation bubbles floating up into the 1 finger tall fluffy white head, leaving a thick rim of lacing and spotty lace down the glass as the beer is enjoyed.

S - Wonderful scents of tangerine & peach sit atop caramel sweetness, lemon zest, grains, grass, and yeasty funk.

T - Waves of mango, orange rind, and a combonation of bitter and juicy hops start the sip, followed by a good dose of caramel malts, leading to a slightly dry, malty finish.

M - The medium body holds moderate carbonation, with a slight dryness on the finish.

O - A well rounded IPA, one of, if not the best IPA I have ever had, good job Victory. (671 characters)

Honestly it's hard to find anything wrong with this beer. Looks great, being a deep orange color with a smallish nearly white head. Expected a larger head right out of the pour, but it leaves lacing on the glass without exorbinant head retention. Smells chock full of bold, full-flavored, resiny hops just assaulting the nose.

Taste follows suit and if your a hop head, you'll have a hard time not liking this one. It's meant to be super hoppy obviously, and it succeeds, but it also remains balanced throughout the whole taste and leaves behind a pleasant bitterness. Manages to feel creamy on the palate yet crisp in the finish.

The 6.7% ABV is hidden well, making this somewhat dangerously delicious. I'd be interested, purely out of curiousity, to see what would happen with just a tad more carbonation, although I think its pretty damn near perfect the way it is. For someone who loves a good hoppy beer, this is up there with the most solid of them all. And at a very reasonable price there's really a lot to love.

Superb beer. (1,037 characters)

I am partial to this beer because it is a local favorite of mine. Pours a nice dark amber color with a thick, foamy white head that settles into a slight lacing. Aroma is dominated by citrus and earthy hops with slight roasted malt hints. Very well-balanced quaffable IPA with a nice malt backbone to counter the bitterness from the hops. (338 characters)

On tap HopDevil pours a hazy beautiful copper-orange. The head is off-white and made of very fine bubbles. A nice lace pattern was left on the glass. The aroma is floral and spicy hops with a hint of malt in the far away background. On tap the taste is like that of the bottle version only it seems brighter and more defined on tap. The battle between the bitterness of the hop and the sweetness of the malt is more in balance in the tap version. They are not so much fighting each other as they are working together in a bliss of malty bitterness. The finish is also smoother with a softer carbonation and a more floral hop flavor. Aftertaste leaves you with a smile and a desire for more and more and more. The alcohol seems almost imperceptible.
Overall an excellent IPA on tap for the hop head. Malty, medium bodied, and hoppy to perfection. (846 characters)

As a hop head it crazy that I have not tried this brew! What a nice surprise. Poured out of a bottle a nice amberish color with little head. Smell was floral with apricot, slight banana, and pine. Taste was a blast of hops! It dissipates giving way to a citrus and apricot hint and finishing with just a hint of pine. The hoppy taste lingers for a bit after the finish. A must try for hop heads! (395 characters)
