In the background plays Richard Strauss' "Thus Spake Zarathustra Overture" (a.k.a. the theme song of 2001: A Space Odyssey) as a 12 oz. Hop Devil bottle gently flows into my crystalline pint glass. Ah-men! No ONE beer is my favorite, but THIS is ONE of my favorites. Yummy. A nearly perfect two finger frothy, sticky head salutes the pour, which, alone, stands up to legendary status among men. Damn the torpedoes and the 300+ BA reviews, for another can only do her justice. This baby is all golden ruby amber hue of perfection. Champagne bubbles roll on and up. Olfactory senses beware: Aromatic, heavenly hops tickle before the beer hits the tongue. Sweet, heavy beauteous hop aroma drips from my nostrils with each waft, like the smell of pancakes, butter and syrup on a hung over Sunday morning. Mmmm.

Taste? Ambrosia, yes, as in 7th grade Latin class: Food for the gods. Honey suckle hops as golden in flavor as the brassy hue. Solid flavor through the cool to warmed temps. This girl can go the distance. Yum. Do I like hops? Taste and appearance of 5's for the first time in my reviews.

If I drink more than three, the thick sweetness clings. Malts? We don't need no stinking malts! Can't drink up these all night or I'd be tunafied! Too tasty? Hmm. Maybe. Like a Philly Tastey-cake too tasty. Could you eat Krimpets all night? Well then. Thought not.

Price: 10 miles from Victory, in the land of the Yuengling, we get 'em $25 beans a case. et tu?

P.S. Brewmaster Chris Firey from Old Dominion-Tupper's Hop Pocket and Victory-Hop Devil fame is anoited as brewmaster at Manyunk Brewery as Brewmaster now. C-ya there, Philly. How YU doin'?

*** RE-REVIEW ***
New version 2005 off of the new system is more malty, less hoppy, but still decent, however this took a stumble. Also, found out the mystery hop in Hop Devil.

Beer is good. Happy beering.

This is an excellent IPA..right up there with, but not better than, Bell's Two Hearted Ale....It pours a rich, deep copper with a litte white lace..the nose is a wondefull mix of floral and spicy hops...the taste is bitter grapefruit style hops along with some decent malt to balance...I'd love to see the bittering units on this as it is very high I'm sure...but at the same time it is relatively balanced....Definitely west coast style..some great hop flavor to this....a very good/borderline great IPA...I love this Brewery...they rock!!!

A - Somewhat cloudy redish orange color. Two finger head with excellent lacing.

S - Citrus hops dominate, not much else noticed.

T - Strong hop bitterness. Grapefruit citrus taste. Some light malt backbone to it. Enough to provide a small semblance of balance to the beer.

M/D - Excellent all around. Medium bodied with excellent carbonation. The bitterness is the only thing holding it back on the drinkability, but I think that is a good thing.

A refreshing, light, and effervescent IPA, the hopdevil is great for one of those warm late sping evenings. I can almost hear the birds chirping as I pour this dark caramel (with a russet tint) brew. The head disappeared quickly, and I noticed not much lace as it receded. The smell is of rolling hills of hops with a hint of the citrus groves wafting in on a light breeze from over the hill. There's noticeable carbonation, but for this kind of day, it's perfect (I just came in from a five-mile walk). This stuff goes down fast, or maybe it's late May and I'm just plain ready for summer.

I've had this beer multiple times but never rated, or until now. Sampled from a 12oz bottle, HopDevil pours a dark orange color with brown tinge, but brightens significantly when held to the light. The beer is for the most part clear. Also good head retention and lacing, but both dissipates over time.

The smell has strong hop aroma. Strong floral aroma with a zesty citrus, a little bit of piney and noticeable spiciness. Some slightly sweet malt is noticeable but hops are strong. Overall this is a stronger smell that is very prominent even for an IPA.

The taste is strong hops but not oily like some high hop beers are. A big floral flavor that is complex. A start from a citrus savor but a stronger grapefruit and lemony flavor just overflows the taste buds. A basic somewhat sweet malt is in the background but plays second fiddle to the hops.

A medium body with limited carbonation, HopDevil is a great tasting IPA. Nothing new here. So go out and try one for yourself.
