The beer pours a lovely caramel color with a full hop aroma and is an excellent example of an American IPA. Good clean malts in the background. The alcohol is not noticeable. The American hops are delicious. Cascade or Cluster hops? The head was not impressive. Overall, a pleasant brew and a joy for hop lovers.

A nice looking auburn colored brew. Floral and furity aromas abound.. Head is creamy albeit thin. The sheathing clinging to the sides of the glass tell me they have some malt body here to balance the hops.

Unlike so many others loosely categorized in this style, Victory satisfies my expectations of an IPA.

After a few of these I'd be ready for the seven course meal.

"Menacingly Delicious"

Best before: 10.1.04

This is one of the first IPAs I enjoyed when I started getting into craft beer about a year ago, and I'm sorry that it's been about that long since I've had it. Pours a deep golden color with lots of sticky foam that lingers on the sides of the glass. As other reviews point out, this IPA is a bit "spicier" and drier that some of the other offerings out there; a real treat for anyone who truly loves and honors the beauty of the hop, in my opinion. If you don't like other IPAs, you certainly will not enjoy this. If you do like IPAs in general, this is a must try.

Make sure you get bottles that are not out of date; it's been my experience that this does not hold up to age very well.

'Bout time I review an area classic... Poured a clear, reddish amber with a small, thick, light tan head that remained for the entire glass. The nose was spicy and citrusy with a doughy, malty backbone, that sometimes smelled like a danish. Taste was spicy up front, slightly fruity and really sour in the middle, like a bowl of warm grape nuits, then comfortably bitter at the finish. The bitterness remained on my palate for quite a while. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Very drinkable. At times, Hop Devil acted like Arrogant Bastard's little brother, but more timid and not so in your face. It's nicely balanced. Great stuff.

Served from a 12 oz bottle marked with "Enjoy By Nov 13 04."

Pours with a 2 cm head that is retained very well. It thins very slowly to a compley layer of thin bubbles. Color is a medium amber and brown. it shows very little caronation through the glass.

The flavor is an outstanding blend of fruity flavor and dry, roasty hop flavor. A distinct sweet malt flavor comes throug as well.

This is an excellent beer.

I had tried this on tap a few years ago. And saw that it was on cask at The Sharp Edge in Pittsburgh this weekend, so I had to get one.

The appearance was an excellent amber, with a nice and creamy half inch head. A little cloudy

Smell was a nice piney/citrusy hop aroma.

Taste: Excellent balance of American hops and malty sweetness.

Mouthfeel: This is where the cask conditioning really shines through. The beer was nice and creamy with a full mouthfeel.

Drinkability: I could have had several of these.

Dark-orange with a small bubbly head.

Hoppy aroma with a nice bitter and citrusness to it. Nice malt backbone, well balanced.

Medium body, fairly smooth but plenty of carbonation.

Strong citrusy hop flavors up front that become bitter as it moves along. A light earthy flavor comes out, but I don't think this is the freshest bottle, not bad though. It finishes up with a dry bitterness.

A very nice IPA, I'd like to try a little fresher bottle, but this is still very nice.

Nice sticky lace, but the head dies very quickly. Cloudy and slightly orange in the amber color.

Very fresh dry hop aromas--alluring. The flavors have an excellent blend of round, pale maltiness with a distinct bitter kick of hop. The bitterness lasts long after the swallow. Strong carbonation as well as a strong oily alcohol touch.

This is a superior IPA: full bodied, bitter, aromatic. I'd love to try this one in a blind flight with Stone IPA (my current favorite). This one is very close.

burnt brown pour with slightly discolored frothy head. head almost looks like guinness's. body is very dark for this style. most IPA's are a lighter brown to resemble their pale hoppy flavor. this devil is extremely dark brown sort of a mahogany as opposed to the typical tanned beech wood color you would expect.

hops explodes from my pint glass. cascade hops especially. almost burns the nose. not much else to comment on aside from that.

the aroma is definetly an indication of how this brew is going to go down. great punch of hops which mellows into a dilluted spice which i'm assuming comes from the yeast. between these two big flavors it's difficult to pick up anything more. hops fans rejoice!!

lots of carbonation mixed in with spicey hops and yeast makes this one an interesting adeventure. swishing around the pallette is a tad sluggish. that slight hesitation makes the bold flavor of this beer even more present. never the less it goes down extremely well.

if you love hops or have enjoyed IPA's this is an easy decision. lovely beer, specially for my fellow hops addicts. this is my craft brew standby. whenever i'm having trouble deciding i goto the devil and you should too.

thank you victory.

12 oz brown bottle.

Creamy off white head that drifts slowly to the sides. Strong lacing throughout the glass. Hazy yet glowing burnt orange in color.

A variety of hop aromas including: pine, heavy hop oils, and a bit of citrus. The hop aromas are very juicy with a slight burnt smell.

A mouthful of hops is the best way to describe the taste. A touch of citrus and dark fruit hints come out from the hops. Great hop flavor! A great burnt bitterness in the aftertaste along with a slight, warming alcohol presence.

Very smooth alcohol flavor. This is a hefty IPA on the palate, but if you want big hop flavor this is what you need to sacrifice. Well balanced in terms of the variety of flavors on the palate.

A solid session IPA at 6.7% abv. Heaven for a hophead (or should I say hell for a hopdevil?). One of the most flavorful and strong IPA's out there. Actually borders a Double IPA. Very tough to improve on this style.

Tan, fuzzy microcream top with lots of sticking. Smell is big fruity hops, heading in the direction of tropical fruits, especially guava.

In the mouth, it's all fruity hops again, but if you were to forget the hops for an instant, then the rich guava jelly and tropical fruits from the nose come right back. Hops strike bitterness in the mouth, move to dryness in the aftertaste, and continue well after that as well. Mildly phenolic at times, like a medicinal soda...but this didn't seem to be bad..

Great structure and balance in this IPA--which makes it highly drinkable.

Had this on-tap at the new Phillies' Citizens Bank Park. Nice to now be able to watch another victory by the Phils and enjoy a Victory brew at the same time. Downside's the plastic cup!

Pours pretty clear and ambery copper colored with a beige head. rather short-lived. Pine resin and citrusy hop aromas and higher-than-normal (for an AIPA) caramelly malt presence evident in the nose. Black tea-like malt sweetness interplayed with some higher alpha hops. One of the best balanced IPA the States has to offer. Carbonation is about average to sligthly lower, but it lets the flavors ride out as they should. This is a reasoable stong beer that I consider almost too easy to drink. I've been having this beer since it's inception, and it is a good, reasonably priced staple beer. Only problem with it is that I've burnt myself out on it. Flipsiding the coin, I sincerely thank Victory and its PA distributors on burning me out on quality and its ready availability.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium brown beer with a nice head with above standard retention. Aroma is quite nice with the hops defiantly in evidence. Taste is quite refreshing with a nice dosage of hops leaving a very enjoyable bitterness on my tongue. Full body without a hint of the alcohol showing. Great one for Victory.

On-tap at the Innsbrooke Capital Ale House.

A kick-ass beer. Everything you want in an AIPA. Hops, a bit of sweet honey, and a long-lasting bitterness. Great mouthfeel and drinkability. Resinous pine hops everywhere on the palate. Beautiful appearance. A staple in my beer fridge.

The hops on the nose are assertive for sure, but there is also plenty of malt and caramel. The distinguishing characteristic here is the rich mouthfeel- not sweet, but rich. Hops carry through all the way till the end and never lose their support. Great effort all around!

Another great offfering.
lets see old horizontal...hopdevil, hodevil...old horizontal.
the two beers are one in the same except for only a few minor differences.
Hopdevil is basically Old Ho with less ABV and a slightly stronger Hop profile. Not sure which one of these fine beers came first, who cares really :)
From the first pour it looked and smelled just like Old Ho, with a slightly accentuated hop profile in the aroma, some apple in the aroma as well. Tast is the same with a lingering sweet and hop combo that is very tasty. Mouthfeel was slightly sticky, like that of Old Ho. Very fine beer, and very drinkable...

hopdevil ale pours a medium amber with a nice lacy head that clings to the glass well. aroma is super hoppy and citrusy. taste is an almost carbon copy of the smell. again, extemely hoppy with a grapefruit citrus flavor. subtle maltiness brings up the rear. mothfeel is a slick, oily, slighty sticky carbonated masterpiece. drinkability is good for 6.7% abv... almost too good. also had this in cask - terrific. wish i had made some notes. awesome ale.

Poured a golden yellow-amber color, with little head that quickly dissapated.

Smell was refreshing, very bright and hoppy. Some note of a bright acid/citrus flavor, lemon, orange?

Taste was a little bit of a letdown. Hops were present, but very polite. My guess is that HopDevil must be brewed with only one type of hop. The flavor was very unified and sad to say, one-dimensional. Compared to other brewers IPA's, I'd really consider this one to be a nice hoppy pale ale rather than a full-up IPA.

Good mouthfeel, very bright and vibrant. Lots of carbonation and "zest"

An easy beer to drink. Almost a good summer-days bbq beer. Very non-offensive.

Darkish amber, big white head. Smells hoppy, obviously... citrus, hoppy, some fruit but not overpowering. Taste is very good, a very strong hop presence but still balanced by some malt and bitterness at the finish. As my handle suggests, I'm not too much of a hophead - I still think the mouthfeel is a little too oily, and the drinkability, for me at least, is pretty much limited to having one or two with dinner. (having said that, it goes great with food, I made some Italian last night and it went wonderfully with the olive oil...) Overall, it's the only IPA I'll really drink, and I'd highly recommend it to other newbies just cutting their teeth on hoppy beers.

Had this out of a 12 oz bottle with a "Enjoy By Sep 04 04" note. This beer was fresh.

The appearance of this beer is really nice deep amber color. There is a spicy and hoppy flavor to each sip. Smooth finish. A nice American IPA. A very drinkable 6.8% ABV beer.

This is the 2nd beer style that I have tried from Victory Brewing and both times I've been very impressed. Good brewery...

Love the bottle with the actual Hop Devil, drink by date "September 13, 04". Nice lacing in the glass. Lovely amber color. Fruity citrus (yep, grapefruit) hop smell. Hops evident in tasting, but not overwhelming: there's a tropical fruit flavor that adds to the easy and dangerous drinkability of this very good IPA.

This is definitely a keeper.

Found this one on tap. The color was a nice light amber with a decent head. The smell was fantastic. I usually have to try real hard to pick up on the sublte aroma in most beer but this one was loaded with it. Very nice hop/citrous smell. The taste was also fantastic. Well balanced maltiness with a good strong hop flavor. This beer was delicious. I could really enjoy several of these. This style is generally not my favorite but I really enjoyed this.

Appearance was a light amber color with a golden tinge to it. The head was explosive and lasted for most the brew.
The smell wasn't real strong but was pleasant. Lots of carmel malt going on with the overall aroma consisting of more malt than hops which surprised me. However the hops were definantly there.
Light alcohol spices as well.
The taste was also not as hoppy as I was expecting but still very good. The first thing that hit was a strong carmel malt flavor, like the aroma. A strong buttery flavor ran along through the whole swalllow. Hops becoming most evident on the finish with a lot of flavor but little bitterness. The hops were fruity giving of several different flavors. A green apple like zest is also present.
Very smooth, body is a little on the light side but this beer is extremely drinkable. I bet I could down large quantities of this stuff.
Big thanks to Drweizen for sending this way out here to Kansas.

Nice reddish-brown color. Hoppy aroma with a little sweetness in there. Nice head retention.

Taste is divine; I'm not a real hop-head and for me it was the perfect balance of the bitterness and the flowery overtones of the hops. Crisp but not too tart. To my taste buds, this is exactly what a top-notch IPA should taste like. Bravo to Victory for this amazing brew.

Medium brown in body with hints of amber. At least an inch of offwhite head. A bit dark for an IPA, but inviting. Enjoy by Oct-08-04 clearly marked.

Characteristic hop spicyness is present along with presence of grapefruit.

Floral and hoppy on the tongue, but I can't help but compare this to Stone's IPA, and come up lacking in every which way. A bit piney towards midsip with flavor of grapefruit. Good, but not great.
