Victory Brewing beers are new to the Texas market and I was quite excited to try them after all the great things I've heard about the beer. Pours a dark amber with a foamy head that dissipates relatively quickly, but retains a thin white layer down to the bottom of the glass. A spicy floral aroma and flavour, but with only a moderate bitterness. Very delicious and certainly one of my favourite IPA's.

oh my...

pours a lovely medium reddish amber. head can be well developed but only if you pour properly, and lace really sticks around.

there's this aroma of fresh fruit or flowers, but also a sweet malt background.

the carbonation gives a smooth mouthfeel, almost silky when swallowed.

the taste - oh, how do i describe it!?? the main thing i have been impressed by, every time i've been drinking it, is how balanced the hops are with the malt, even though the hops are very prominent. they play off each other really well. i've had this with spicy sichuan chinese, an italian ciabatta/prosciutto sandwich, danish blue cheese, salt&vinegar potato chips, burritos, etc. everything seemed to go great with it, lol

i know some hopheads have been slightly disappointed, since there is "hop" in the name, after all. but hey, this is "just" an IPA! nowadays, i think a hophead has to go for the double-IPA's instead, in order to get their fix, no?

I really thought this was a kick ass ale...It is what is says: hoppy. It has a nice amber color with a small, slightly creamy head. The head was a bit more constructed in the cask bier I had as opposed to the bottled versions. The aroma and taste were thoroughly dominated by hops, hops, and more hops. Goes down well and leaves a lingering hop aftertaste.

Bottle dated "enjoy by 15 May 09," which was about two weeks ago. I'm not too concerned.

Pours a copper-amber into my pint glass. Little head that quickly fades to a thin layer of foam on top, some lacing. Detect a pleasant smell of hops, floral, and some sweeter citrus notes.

Taste is bold like an IPA should be, but surprisingly complex. Some bread, then the floral hops with their bitterness, with a malty back end that has the citrus I expected from the smell. Maybe a hint of a roasted flavor, or is that the beer showing its age and giving me weird, off tastes? Moderate carbonation is not distracting, very smooth.

Easily a session beer. Its complexity shines through because the hops, though present in a hefty dose, are not overpowering to the palate.

The hop devil lives up to the hype. Nice red-amber color, darker than I expected. Very big hoppy nose. Nice easy taste, lingered on the tongue.Big spice flavor, florals, hops, is there cinnamon in there ? It sure tasted like it to me. Strong bitterness at the end wakes you up and demands another taste. A proven winner and worth the wait. I have been trying to get it in Florida for a while.

Being a big fan of hoppy beers I found HopDevil to be one of the best. It's a beautiful clear amber color with a nice thick off white head that slowly dissolves to a sheet on the beer and leaves a good amount of lace on the glass. The aroma is full of flowery esters and citrus smells. Each sip is a hop lovers delight. Hops dominate each sip with their citrus and flowery flavors. Some toasted malt is found in the background to balance out the flavor. A mild bitterness and sticky pallett is left behind.

This is an excellent and very drinkable beer. If you like hops I highly recommend it.

This is a beautiful beer. Nice head, off-white some what brown, leaves a nice lace on the side of the glass. Smells wonderful, there must be hops in there. And there most certainly are. The taste is amazing, lovely hops exploding all over the taste buds-spicy: tastes graet and feels great This has become one of my favorites.

I have spent some time, effort and money tasting beer. This ale is the one I always return to.

The head is a nice two fingers that slowly works its way back into the body of the beer as you let the ale breathe. The color is a redish amber and the carbonation trails are a sight to behold.

The smell is a floral, piney scent. Best sampled after poured and settled.

The mouthfeel is just right. Not too much carbonation which can cause a burning sensation. This ale is smooth to the palate and leaves a nice after taste. No stale beer breath with this brew.

This beer is a great beer for drinking with good friends and family. Everyone that I have introduced to this ale went out the next day and bought a case. In fact I shared a bottle with my local distributor owner and he now carries Hopdevil for those of us that crave a hoppy experience.

12 oz. bottle poured into a great divide pint glass. one of the coolest beer labels in rotation. i've "danced w/ the hopdevil" on several occasions, but this is my first official review.

clouded amber w/ a pronounced, rocky head. not as much lacing as i'm used to, but it could be this particular offering. still, this is an above-average pour.

sense of smell is overwhelmed by grapefruit, grass, spices and an aggressive, yet pleasant surprise of biscuity malt.

stand back!!! this is a full-scale hop assault. seamless combination of citric flavors and semi-sweet malt. a masterful balance of ingredients lends to incredible taste and texture. the aftertaste has staying power, but the control of the myriad flavors does nothing to negatively affect the palate.

this is pretty much bulls-eye for an american IPA, and certainly a juggernaut in its class. could be a bit aggressive on the hops for the casual drinker, but i'm sure those looking for a break from the norm will appreciate this banner offering from victory. it's easy to enjoy a few of these, even at 6.7% abv.

stellar.

A-Thick, perfect head with brilliant orange color

S- Fresh flowery inviting aroma - smells like fresh hops rubbed between your fingers

T - Flowery, sweet malty with slight citrus exoloding into a slightly bitter hop blast finish, absolutely fantastic well structured IPA

M - Very carbonated, but not overly so - medium on the palate

D - Very drinkable for an IPA especially for a cold weather brew - not a session beer, but one definately calls for several more

Gorgeous copper body. Nice rocky off white head. Disipates too soon. Very good lacing. Fine (as in very small) carbonation rising. Aroma of floral hops is intense at arm's length. Bittering hops come through nose up close, with strong dose of citric. Strong malt presence balances hops until delightful hop tingle in aftertaste. Taste is so good it is actually difficult to keep from chugging the entire glass. Victory has several remarkable beers, but if this was their only product, they would still be an outstanding brewery.

this devil pours out hazy, slightly murky dark rust colour. a small but thick off white head reduces to a sticky lace. although it's obvious that there is mighty hop load in this beer, what impresses me is the malty aroma that stands up to the usually nasal piercing hoppiness. upon tasting, it's a total malt and hop assault, battling out on the battlefield known as my tongue. malts seem very bready and sweet...full bodied...super malty mouthfeel....easy drinking...tasty floral hopping and just the perfect amount of bitterness in the finish. this is one of the few IPA's where i actually think the malt outduels the hop in the profile...and it's welcome.

perfectly balanced and extremely delicious.

thanks to frank4sail for the devilish sample.

Had to review again to once again be in amazement of this beer. It is so straightforward and simply put together, yet produces an amazing array of tastes and textures. No sugars or spices, no special fermentations, just excellent rich malts flavored with the whole flower hops. Sometimes this beer comes on like an IPA, sometimes like an Alt, with a little bit of Stout thrown in for good measure. At about a buck a beer from most PA distributors, this most reviewed of beers proves that even though it is not number 1, you give up nothing for being the most popular.

A wonderful hand pulled pint at Mug's Ale House in Brooklyn.
The beer arrives in a tall nonic pint. The liquid is a deep ruddy amber, topped with a short, creamy ivory head. Good clarity, with excellent head retention and gobs of lace sticking to the glass in rings.
The aroma reveals pungent grapefruity hops. Very citric, with some pine and herbal notes. A solid malt backbone with a sweet toastiness playing beneath the hops. A touch of caramel malt, with fragrant appley esters. Unbelievable balance, with every nuance in it's right place.
The flavor starts out with rich toasty malt. A light caramel flavor rides through, hoisting the hops through the finish. Just enough appley fruitiness comes through the middle, with a touch of pear. A robust grapefruity hop flavor edges it's way in rather early, quickly stealing the show in the finish. Light herbal and pine flavor comes through, but it's mostly a display of citric american hops. Moderate bitterness, but the balance never wavers. A touch of sweetish yeast in the aftertaste, with plenty of citric hop flavor. Very soft carbonation, just a light tingle on the tongue. Full bodied, with a very creamy cask conditioned mouthfeel. Top shelf.
IPA doesn't get much better than this. One of my all time favorites. I find myself craving this more than any other beer when I'm thirsty for a pint. This gets my gold star and red pencilled "great job!" with a big circled A+.

I'm drinking it right now....yep, that's downright tasty. Any attempt I make to put the tasting experience into words will simply denegrate the experience and would be laden with subjective inference.
Enjoy it for yourself sometime...I can't possibly convey to you the joy this particular beer has provided me...and you will never really taste THIS particular beer anyway...

As Heraclitus said: we never drink the same beer twice.

In a word...HOPPY! This pours to a dark reddish orange, with medium off-white head that lingers long and leaves very good lacing on the glass. The aroma is immediately strong, grassy hops, and the flavor follows suit perfectly. Mouthfeel is tangy and bitter, and the finish is long and bitter, just perfect. The hops were by far the outstanding feature of this beer, and it is very aptly named.

Got this on a trip to NC, and just wish we could find it here in Atlanta.

An Excellent Beer!!

I've been meaning to try this beer for a long time and I'm glad that I finally did. In fact I wish I'd done so much earlier - this is an excellent beer for a hophead like me.

Holding the glass up to the setting sun coming in through my window shows the most wonderful amber colour with plenty of rising bubbles and a creamy white head. The head showing good retention and leaving a pleasing pattern of lacing on the inside of the glass.

Much citrus in the aroma, with a good hit of malty toffeeness. The hops are to the fore in the mouth but the malt is rounding things off in the background. The hops certainly do their fun little dance at the back of the mouth as it goes down though. Very satisfying in its balance. Perfect mouthfeel - not too full, not too thin, not too carbonated.

One of the best beers I've tried for a good while.

This is one of the first craft beers I really got into, almost 10 years ago. Could be the weaning or a regional bias, but I find HopDevil to be one of the top 5 most-drinkable brews in my life. I love it swilled out of the bottle, in a plastic cup at Phils' games, or the "correct" way - poured into a pint.

Any time I have it out of a glass/cup, whether from draft or from bottle, there's always a beefy head - product of the hops used maybe, I don't know for sure. Fairly clean-filtered look, but an awesome deep reddish-orange hue - reminiscent, sort of, of the color of certain doppelbocks or maybe a Vienna lager.

The aroma is unmistakable - a little fuzzy-piney, quite pungent citrus, and perhaps a punch of malty sweetness rounding it out. Could be getting some toasted notes as well. Mouth-watering.

The citrus element bursts forth in the taste, taking on subtle grapefruit notes. A bold, spicy, vaguely peppermint, jolt invigorates (then scrubs) the tongue and a moderately sugar sweet malt base brings everything together (Sly Fox Phoenix Pale Ale exhibits similar characteristics). Hardly crisp or dry throughout - drinks a bit like IPA soda pop.

I've never had a moment with this beer where I wasn't in mad lust. Helps living in the area, where the price for a six-pack seems chucklingly low. I love it. Love it.

I feel bless and cursed in living so close to Victory - less than 15 minutes away. As usual quality is exceptional with all their brews, but this weekend the finest balance, smoothest drinking HopDevil was available on the hand pump. The hops were there with fruity flavor and delicious bouquet and malty finish. It was considered desert after a great round of golf.

This is simply my favorite beer in the world right now. It is so bold but yet devoid of the taste of a contrived gimicky beer, which I have found ot be the case with some hoppy beers. These guys know how to brew a super-hoppy beer, no doubt about it. The aromas and flavors that this beer will fill you with are unparalleled. It is such a clean drink with such a wonderful aftertaste that I frequently find myself craving it.

The color is drop dead gorgeous.... the taste is out of this world.... if I could walk around with this beer in my mouth all day long I would be the happiest man alive, who needs to eat and talk anyway.

Wow! Some IPAs just bite you and are sometimes hard to swallow. This offering has an excellent amber appearance that leaves a clinging lace all the way down the glass. Smell is floral and not overpowering. The taste has a floral quality that is absolute perfection, just enough to add to the character, but not overpowering. The mouthfeeel is outstanding. It goes down easy and leaves a reminder of its hopping in a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Suprisingly, this brew is very drinakable, even though the ABV is up there. Of all the IPAs I've tried, by far the best.

very bold hoppy and smooth all around a damn good beer. this is the beer that got me into good beer. for me it's a classic. It always has a damn good color and body. Hoppy and bitter. I first took a chance on it outside of Pittsburgh at a random dive bar, hollywood gardens in rochester twp. One drink and i could never go back to drinking shitty lagers. Little did i know that this was just a start to the many great beers I have drinken since.

One of my favorites. Great tasting and well balance of hop's and malt's. It has the right balance of sweetness/bitterness. This would be a great beer to introduce to your friends. Wow! The hops just explode on the palate. Lovely reddish brown color. Nice creamy head but doesn't last long. Leaves a decent lace. I love the pungent hoppy aroma and the faint citrusy notes. Exceptional finish, you get a nice hop burn long after the last sip has gone down. One of the 5 best American Pale Ales I have ever had. Oddly, it's not that easy to find in neighboring Ohio.
