A slightly hazy, medium dark, yellowish-red IPA with a medium, light tan head. The smell is hoppy and piney. The taste is malty with a cedary bitterness. The body in my mouth is firm, yet softly rounded. Overall, definitely and IPA, but a bit on the hoppy side for my evolving taste.

Bright and colorful eye-catching label with a picture of some hops with devil's horns. I've heard alot of good things about this beer but it wasn't as "over the top hops" as I expected.

Clear amber color, medium tan head which dissipates to a nice clingy lace. Aroma is hoppy, citrus & pine aplenty, with a mild maltyness in the background. Initial light malt sweetness gets clobbered by a hops bitterness that lingers on. A hop lovers dream, although it is still a fairly well-balanced brew. (306 characters)

Being a fan of pale ales I was very excited to taste this for the first time and Victory did not disappoint. With a smooth pour and a foggy amber color with a bubbly off-white head I was ready to go. the smell had a nice fruity, floral sensation with a definite hop quality. The first sip was everything I was expecting. A rich, full body witha complex array of hops and citrus flavors with a mellow dry aftertaste. This warmed me up on a less than warm night, but I could also drink 4 or 5 of these on a hot summer day. No matter what you like this is a keeper. Cheers! (570 characters)

I can't add much more about appearance that has not already been said. I admit it, I am a hophead. I love IPAs -- Bass, of course, the first, then I was introduced to the local brew in Harpoon IPA back when it was a seasonal. Then came Tremont, Shipyard Fuggles, Sam Adams, etc. Traveling I savored Bridgeport IPA, Goose Island IPA, and Rogue Brutal Bitter, but, sadly, they are not available in MA. Then one chilly evening I found Victory Hop Devil in my favorite "packy" (Macy's).

I see that some have mentioned Stone in the same breath as Hop Devil; I can't compare, as Stone in $10 a six as opposed to $7 for Hop Devil. However, I find it difficult to believe that it is $3 better. Hop Devil smells wonderful, and tastes even better. Feels great on the tongue, and rolls down smoothly. The only problem is that its so good and refreshing it's hard to to sip!

If you like your ale on the hoppy side, you can't go wrong with Hop Devil. It's as good as any out there, and better than most...and I swore by Harpoon for years! (1,031 characters)

Deep amber with rich carbonation, off-white head that gives great lace and holds well.
Smells very hoppy, no surprise of course, but it's not a simple plain hop smell, has a spicy kick to it.
Taste great, not overwhelmingly bitter like other "hop beers" but well done as to make it a pleasure to drink. Lots of sweetness up front.
Feels great going down and even though it is not a thick beer at all it still leaves a nice film of sweet bitterness on your palette.
I generally steer away from hoppy beers as most are too overwhelming, but this brew is great.

Classic tall 12oz brown glass bottle. Twist-off cap. The red and blue label shows a hop cone devil hybrid.
Beatiful hazy, copper body topped by a large creamy and rocky tan head that holds very well and leaves clumpy lace.
Caramel covered spicy hop cone smell. Fresh hay and barnyard notes. Grass and some mild pine hop scents come through after agitation.
The flavors are just great. Plenty of resin hops to go around with a spicy kick. The caramelish malts only poke through at the very initial taste and then drowns on a sea of resin hops. The aftertaste is dominated by a strong and delicious bitter hop bite that lasts and lasts.
Medium body with lots of coating and a slick sensation. The hops are slightly rough and makes for a dry finish.
Highly drinkable, especially in todays warm summer weather. This is a great companion for the grill.

Wow! Possibly the best IPA I've had. Red amber pour with a very nice head. Quite the hoppy rabbit. Tastes of, well, hops. There is enough flavor here for this BA to dig. For all those who dig a nice hoppy IPA, this is your nice hoppy IPA.

Thank you Victory. (261 characters)

Thick french vanilla white head that gets chunky and very appealing as is disipates. The nose on this beer let's you know what you are in for with grapefruit rind and little buttery malt presence. This beer is very good. It is very hoppy and has all the floral nose and tastes you would expect x 2. The hops in this beer reallly make it enjoyable and not overdone in regards of bitterness. It has a big malt and toastyness that comes through for a good balancing act but is then taken over by long spicy hop finale.

If I was going looking for a BIG IPA I would grab this one again (581 characters)

The glass fills with a burnt amber colored beer, the color you'd expect Diablo's pool to be, of course topped with a thick, smoky, earthy, slightly sweet smelling foam. What could be bubbling up from those depths? This evil beverage base is a firm malt sweetness, with a little smoke and butteryness on the tongue. Then the snakes of hop hell apear and cover the ground knee high. If Diablo had any sense, he sure would have one of these in his hand as he welcomes you to his lair.Welcome to hell Mr Bitterbeerfaceman, welcome. A nice Ipa with medium body and a balanced if not understated hoppiness. (594 characters)

Pours a dark amber with a more than ample off white head that lingers.
Smell: mainly hops, fruits, and alcohol.

Taste: The hops dominate whole heartedly and it's a very wonderful thing. Bold, spicy, bitter, but not overly bitter. The aftertaste of bitterness doesn't last long either.

Mouthfeel: Bubbly, then bittersweet.

I'm pretty impressed with this IPA, but it probably won't be a repeat purchase of mine since I'm not a hop lover. (446 characters)

Light copper color, some haziness. Fine, off-white head that is retained for quite a while. Strong, sweet, citrusy hop aroma. Flavor also dominated by hops with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Medium body balances hop flavor nicely. Carbonation level is just right with the bubbles making a nice tingle on the tongue that is good with the spicy hoppiness. A good beer if you're in the mood for lots of hops. (404 characters)

An off white head rests atop the burnt orange brew. Aroma is of floral hops (no surprise there!) Taste is of course hoppy too, but the malts do come into play as well. A hoppy burp sends the malts back into retreat. This beer is the perfect compliment to the chips & salsa and hopefully a great warm up for the 90 minute IPA I'll be enjoying for the Superbowl. Finishes slightly sweet and spicy. Thanks to aaronh for this awesome hopfest! (438 characters)

Golden amber, a white head that doesn't really hang around to talk. Some lacing, but not exceptional. Smell betrays west coast hops with flowery scents, but some spice hangs in there too. Taste is similar, with the spicy hop character winning out over the perfumey flavours (I don't like my beers overloaded with that). You all know what people think of this beer, I'll just add that it's almost lives up to the hype. Which is to say that this is a very good beer. (464 characters)

I finally broke down and bought a six. (due to the cost) It was about 3 weeks under the best before date. This beer poured a nice clear amber, head retention was very good and lacing was plentiful. Nice piney hop aroma but more understated than some west coast IPA's. Taste was hoppy and a bit peppery I want to say as the beer had a spicey kick to it. Still it was a bit smoother than most West Coaster's, I thought it very nice and drinkable. Glad I tried it, but due to the cost it won't be a staple. (503 characters)

Beautiful amber color. I got a nice thick head with mine. The head was a cream color and lasted a while. After a while though, it thinned out, but it was still evident. The taste was stouty at first, mixed with some fruit, and even a little spicey. After I held it in my mouth for a few seconds, it lost it's bite and became low key. Finished off smooth and left a little bit of a peppery aftertaste. Verdict: I could drink it all day and watch football. (454 characters)

Pours a clear light brown tea color with a massive 2 finger off-white head. The pungent aroma of strong citrusy hop is dominant with nothing else being able to poke through. A strong flavor of the citrus hops and a light earthy malt taste and very light spices…but barely shining through. It has a light to medium body and finishes with a very dry hop. Very bold…very good! Thanks to Rotsaruch for sending this to me. Cheers! (427 characters)

Great golden amber color. Lazy bubbles and moderate head. Quick and intense hop burst, with rich bitterness that clings to mouth and continues through to the aftertaste. Good herbal bouquet, slightly fruity. This one makes you pucker!! (235 characters)

With all the hype about this beer I decided to give it a try....

The pour revealed great head retention with generous amounts of foamy white lace.It had a smell of hops with a bitter touch. The smell also had a "copper" smell to it.It had a full body with a dark cherry red color.Very silky and smooth with a good mouthfeel. The finish was very dry with a long bitter grapefruity aftertaste. The overall taste didnt impress me.Other than the appearance I dont see what all the hype is about.Way too bitter needs more balance. This beer is way to overrated! I would not buy or drink this again. (592 characters)

I have heard so much about the vaunted HopDevil, that I knew that I must make a foray into hop hell. But after trying it, I'm thinking this is closer to heaven.

Pours a slightly orange copper, with a persistent white head that leaves rings of lace. Aroma is very fruity... orange rind, grapefruit, carmel... with some floral notes. Flavor begins with some caramel, and finishes with a somewhat acidic grapefruit... and a fair amount of bitterness... although it's nicely balanced by the malt. Somewhat prickly with a medium body. I can see why this one is highly regarded! A great beer for the hophead. (605 characters)

A facetious hop leaf label resplendent with a bitter green evil wry smile affronts the obverse of the Bottle label. Good vs Evil Maybe.
Pours an iridescent, deep amber, anti-religious color, with copper clad spikes. Is it Easter? If not. The uprising in this beer is way too early, Easter is 4 months away so put that rock back. The head is a light tan frothy number nailed to the head that collapses slowly but surely. Leaves a frothy, but smooth looking voluminous rocky head that smatters its entrails on the glass sides. The Romans would have loved that. A fresh hoppy aroma introduces a green hop bitterness that clubs the cheeks. Mouthfeel is solid. I Think this beer is AReligious, thank goodness, because so am I. Nail this beer to the wall, saturate its open wounds in Malt Vinegar, spear its heart, and then profess your undying love for something that you never believed in. Oh dear, now I am being sarcastic. So lets be serious. Hopsheads will love this evil offering.
OK, so you're expecting a Biblical comment right?
Well I’m an Athiest, so this will have to do;

The Devil walks into a crowded bar. Within seconds the bar emptied with people running out screaming all over the place, all except for one old man leaned over the bar drinking Victory Hopdevil.
The Devil wanders across to the old man and says "Do you know who I am?"
The old man took another sip of his beer and answered "Yep"
The Devil stared at the old man and asked "Well, aren't you afraid of me?"
The old boy looks the Devil up and down for a minute and shrugs "I married your sister 40 years ago, why the hell should I be scared of you?"

The Old Man is me, well, maybe - one day.

Hop Devil Ale – What can I say, I think Pontious Pilot drank this beer before he was “Paid”, I am sure. Well at least before he was enticed to invest in Enron.

As a Hop-Head : I will be buying more of this offering that's for sure, for I am sure I will definitely not be going to Heaven. (1,997 characters)

Deep copper, amber in color, with a thinnish, smooth off white head. Decent lace down the glass. Nose is hoppy and citric. Flavor starts off caramel sweet, with a strong, fairly rough hop flavor throughout. Hops lend a good blend of citric and floral flavors to the brew, with spicy and acidic notes present throughout. Well-carbonated, but fairly creamy in body, with a medium-light mouthfeel and a dry finish. Nice hop aftertaste. Overall a good IPA, though I probably wouldn't rank it top #10. Seems a bit one dimensional compared to, say, Stone's Ruination. (561 characters)

I've had this both bottle and tap. I have equally enjoyed both but found the bottle to be fresher, more likely than not a serving issue on the establishment with the tap.

Clear dark amber fluid pours out a nice head. Hop aroma hits the nose like a boxer going in for the kill caramel backs it up. Bitterly and menacingly flavorful, more hops than a gaggle of rabbits. I don't know of another beer that is more possessed by the hop spirit than this one. Dry bitter but thick full body that maintains as well ‘till the end.

Hoptopia for the hop heads. (557 characters)

Pours a light amber color, slightly hazy, with an off-white foamy head, that turns into a thin layer, and laves nice lace. Aroma is all hops, floral and citrus. Medium bodied with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Taste is very much like the aroma. Lots of hop flavor, citrus, grapefruit, and floral tastes. Malt is somewhere in the backround. Different hop flavors along with the toasted malt in the backround make this a nice balance of flavor, and not a shocking hop bitterness. Finishes slightly bitter with some spiciness. A very good IPA. Sit back and enjoy! (556 characters)

Appearance: Pours a beautiful orange/reddish color with great clarity. A good-sized head stays pretty well and has a nice sheeting effect down the side of the glass.

Smell: Cascade hops and all the wonderful scents that come with them: pine, grapefruit, citrus... A touch of sweet malt too. Great aroma!

Taste: A skillful balance of sweet malt and hop bitterness and flavor. The cascade hops certainly make themself known. Lots of pine, grapefruit, a touch of pineapple, a bit of a flowery taste, and a bitterness that finishes out strong. I pick up on a touch of toffee throughout as well. Nice balance.

Mouthfeel: Very soft and rounded, with a smooth, medium thickness.

Drinkability: Good. Some American Pale Ales knock you over with hops...this one has just as much as the next one, but in a beautiful balance with the malt flavors. (847 characters)

Not a huge hop fan as of yet, but slowly becoming one. This beer poured into the glass a bright amber/copper color. There were slight bubbles as you peered into the glass. The head seemed quiet thick and white. The lace clinged to the sides dragging the whole way down. The aroma was dominated by the hops. There were hints of citrus and sweet malt as well. The taste was big. Much like the aroma the hoppy taste was present. But through the hops you notice slight fruit like grapefruit. You also notice hints of a toasted malt. A good beer, a bit strong if you are just starting to review hoppy beers, but I would come back, and try more. (639 characters)
