Weizen beers are not a style I go to very often but on hot days here in NC I do from time to time.Pours into a weizen glass a pale yellow color with not much haze,a thinner (for the style) white head atop, doesn't really have the look of a Bavarian wheat beer wich in Victory's defense it sorta isn't.Aromas of yeasty phenols and toasted cereal grain, there is some serious clove going on here. The flavors are dominated by the toasted grain with the phenols giving off some spice with hint of smoke, the feel is light and almost flat feeling wich doesn't fit the style.Kinda let down here I bought this thinking this was gonna be a hefe weizen with a bit of a punch but honestly.... not really.

Served on tap at the Victory Brewery.

Light yellow, not really pale, but rather a golden color with a fair colored haze. The head was very creamy and thick at a solid two fingers with great retention. The foam left heavy trails down the sides, not really dainty enough to be called lacing. This look really good!

The aromas brought me back to center with the typical light fruity banana smells and a hint of spicy clove. You can pick up some of the wheat malt and just a bit of citrus on the nose.

Interesting, this is. It has a light, delicate sense to it but at the same time has a very complicated set of flavors that come through. The wheat malt is noticeable, along with banana, clove, & yeast that typically goes along with it, but there was something on the order of cinnamon or nutmeg that was faint but seemed to bring everything together. Toward the end came some light bitterness, presumably from hops, that seemed to hit just before the finish and then everything ended with a relatively clean finish. Carbonation was fine and abundant and lent itself well to a slightly creamy texture. This was a beauty!

I don't know that I am doing this brew justice with my review. It's not your average hefeweizen and you really just need to experience it to get that wonderful complexity. Very drinkable, very smooth, and very recommended!

On-tap at Capital Ale House.

Hazy bright golden-yellow in color with an active, fizzy white head that is killed off by the slice of lemon wedge on the glass. LOTS of fruity esters in the nose, bannanas mostly. Clove and some citrus fruits in the background, along with a bit of bread dough. Flavor is crisp and fruity up front, with a yeasty aftertaste. Bannanas in the flavor, along with some peppery spice, coriander, maybe some orange peel? Very clean finish, with a good mouthfeel. Very drinkable and well-done.

First of all, if you ever have a chance to go to a Victory tasting GO! It was a great time, a sales rep. put it on at the Pittsburgh Deli in Shadyside. Appearance: Cloudy golden unfiltered wheat beer, leaves behind intricate fine lacing as the frothy white head disipates. Aroma: Touch of banana sharp sweetness from the malted wheat clove and vanilla swirls around in this concoctiobn, underneath all of the phenols and fruit comes a nice alcohol kick. Hefe at 6.2 abv maybe a little out of style guidelines but it's okay this one's Mad. Taste: Amazing alcohol infused you can feel it in the back of the throat, but the banana and clove with a kiss of vanilla do this beer right, wow what a nice beer. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied slightly sticky higher carbonation excellent wheat beer. Drinkability: Only complaint is that it's not bottled, in house at Victory only what a damn shame. I throughly enjoyed this beer our table finished a couple pitchers of it.

had this on tap at Local 44's locals only event

hazy straw yellow...fluffy white

banana, wheat spiciness, cloves and lemon all present in the nose

banana...slight peppery wheat...lemon stands out as the beer warms

very smooth drinking

this is the mold American hefeweizens should try and replicate....very glad this was on the list today at Local 44

On tap at the Victory brewpub. This beer poured a cloudy yellowish body with a thick foamy white head and respectable lacing on the glass. The nose was dominated by some quality spice tones and banana notes as well. The taste also had some good spice notes, cloves, as well as touches of banana and vanilla. Very well put together beer and easy to drink.

DATE REVIEWED: July 27, 2014... GLASSWARE: Weihenstephan weizen ... OCCASION: another chain saw and tractor day in the yard--but a sweet reward...APPEARANCE: handsome three-finger snow-white head that stays thick and creamy for a duration; appropriate, unfiltered hazy golden yellow body with steady effervescence; lacing is inconsistent but observable ... AROMA: alluring yeast of banana and fragrant candy; malts are understated but provide a doughy hint with some licorice to boot--a bit more complex than the ordinary hefe... PALATE: active, impactful and reasonably bodied--more weight than a weizen--with a heavier aftertaste as well; an astringent, creamy combination that makes this thirst-quenching but substantial... TASTE: banana and pepper, with some sweet malts mixed in; some warmth too... OVERALL: worth a bomber's price, this beer is a bigger, somewhat bolder take on a refreshing style--like the Whirlwind with a little V Lager mixed with some nondescript spices that engages with strength...

Victory- Mad King's Weiss

10 year anniversary party.

Appearance- hazy cloudy yellow with a thcik white frothy head.
Smell- strong spices, clove and cinnimon with the usual banana scent.
Taste- bananas and clove. Strong, but smooth, sugary clove flavor. Like the chewing gum clove.
Mouthfeel- smooth and crisp. light, easy to drink.

Overall- my wife's favorite offering from Victory and 1 of the best Hefe's I've had. Good beer even on a cold Feb. night.

Growler filled @ Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting

Initial pour into a Weizen glass yields a fairly clear, golden Hefe with a finger of quickly fading head leaving little lacing. A nice spiciness to the nose, along with yeast and some citrus. Taste is in line with the nose, adding in the typical banana / clove / bubblegum flavors the style is known for. Light carbonation and medium bodied, refreshing!

Never even heard of this until I saw it pop up on the growler station - seems it was bottled at one time but is strictly draught these days. A nice Hefe, nothing mind blowing or out of place.

Appearance - Pours hazy and is a gold-tinged yellow color with a white finger width head that fizzes away like a soda, leaving behind a fairly lifeless, barren surface. No lacing.

Smell - Primarily a citrus aroma with lesser notes of banana.

Taste - True to the nose, with a mild, lemon-like citrus flavor being the predominant character throughout. Banana is in there playing second fiddle, while hints of clove spice hit near the finish.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium in body with a fizzy, bitey carbonation that's too aggressive for the style.

Overall - There are some styles that just can't handle a bit of experimentation - hefeweizen seems to be one of them. I like my hefes laid back and completely approachable; the strong citrus and bitey carbonation just doesn't do it for me. You can't put "A European-Style Wheat Ale" on the front of the label, then completely crap on the style by overhopping and overcarbonating. Sorry Victory, a rare miss from you here.

The Mad King offers the typical hefe-weizen appearance with the exception that its head is a bit limited (which may be due in part to its alcohol content, but is almost certainly due to it's slightly lower carbonation level). The nose offers some restrained phenolics with a delicate touch of banana/clove and some light spice. The body is medium and it's quite smooth across the palate. It's carbonation level is lower than many German hefeweizens where the CO2 levels seem to average about 3.6 volumes (although they can range from 2.8 up to 5.1 volumes). Higher levels can be too gassy and filling; and even those in the average range with prickle the tongue and give a huge head that makes the pour take a bit longer. The Mad King is in the lower range at around 2.8 volumes and is much smoother across the palate, allowing you to experence more of the beer in your mouth with less "airy" foam from released CO2. The flavor is lightly sweet (not as sweet as a standard weizen), a bit tangy, and exceptionally well-balanced by a bitterness that lies just beneath the surface. It finishes dry with some mild apple-ish fruitiness, a touch of light wheaty malt, a sprinkling of alcohol, and some very delicate spiciness. Quite impressive! Although it seems pretty straightforward at the start, it actually reveals a bit of complexity by the finish. It's reduced sweetness and carbonation level add to its drinkability, although its slightly elevated alcohol does come into play after a few. For fans of the hefeweizen style, this takes it one step further.

On-tap at the brewery.

This beer seems a little off to me. It's too big and sweet for it's own good. The yeast has come through some spice and banana, but the overall flavor is muddled up by the sweetness, ruining the complexity for me. Maybe it's there and I just can't get it.
