Beer added by: WVbeergeek on 08-14-2002

Bavaria’s fabled Ludwig was said to be ‘mad’. The same might be said of us for approaching this German beer style with fistfuls of hops beyond the norm for this style and yeast from Belgium!

Malt: Imported two-row German malts, including wheat

Hops: Whole flower German hops

ABV: 6.2%

High-powered with all German malts and the subtle, spicy complexity of our special yeast, Mad King's Weiss offers a quenching quality that can't be beat.

Draft at Kraftwork on 2/17/11.

Pours a very hazy golden yellow banana color with golden yellow hues when held to a light and a half finger white head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Minimal spots of lacing left behind.

Slightly earthy, tart aroma with lots of zesty spice as well as some bready yeast and crisp citrus fruit. Hints of coriander, pepper, banana and lemon peel. The nose is pretty complex with lots of different characteristics bouncing off of one another. Nice and spicy but still has plenty of light, crisp citrus and yeast character.

Full bodied and very flavorful with an excellent balance of bread/yeast, citrus, light fruit and spice. The spice isn't overpowering with subtle pepper and coriander that compliments the citrus lemon peel and light banana flavor very nicely. The ABV of this beer isn't very high but it is well asked with little alcohol flavor, making this tasty beer extremely quaffable. Prominent banana and flavor which is a nice change for the style with the perfect spice, bread and citrus compliment.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer and it was much better than I anticipated. I can easily see this becoming one of my favorite Victory offerings. Recommended.

This is one of if not my favorite Hefe of all, and it does not disappoint from the growler. Unfortunately Victory does not bottle Mad King's, so I can't get it very often.

The thick head of the beer does not translate from the tap to the growler so the appearance suffers a bit, and the aroma is not as full and intense, but overall it is nearly just as good as my initial glowing review of this beer.

Victory makes a lot of great beer, and I think this is bare none the most underrated of their line.

Served from a growler purchased at the Victory brew-pub.

A cloudy, off yellow color with a small white head. It seems very bubbly. No lacing. No yeast particles.

Lots of bannana with some coriander. A very typical smell for the style.

A bannana type taste is up front, followed by some sweetness. Finishes with a fantastic peppery taste.

A nice light mouthfeel.

Very Good drinkability! This is a grat beer to pick up from Victory and watch Football with friends on a Sunday.

Brought my self back from the brewery a nice jug of this stuff from the 4/5 BA Event. Hazy yellow/orange almost glowing color. A very appealing beer to the eyes. A thick rich lasting white head results from the pour and stays with ya for a while. Beautiful persistant lace on the glass. Sweet wheat smell with some spice (corriander) and fruit (banana) in the nose. Rich wheat malt taste with a hint of marshmellow sweetness. The sweetness is enhanced quite well by the corriander and banana notes on the tongue. Very smooth silk mouth. Sharp yeasty and ABV punch at the finish. I enjoyed this brew very much. It gives their Whirlwind great genetics.

A fantastic representation of this style, I truly enjoyed this German wheat brew while gnashing on some crusty German bread at Ludwig's Garten. After disposing of the provided slice of orange, I noticed a fantastic head that stood the test of time. The aroma was of bananas and maybe some faint clove. The flavor was smooth, palate-cleansing and refreshing. I am not the biggest fan of hefeweizens, but this one is a Bier that I would not hesitate having again.

Zum wohl!

On tap at the Victory brewpub. This beer poured a cloudy yellowish body with a thick foamy white head and respectable lacing on the glass. The nose was dominated by some quality spice tones and banana notes as well. The taste also had some good spice notes, cloves, as well as touches of banana and vanilla. Very well put together beer and easy to drink.

They seem to have this every time I go to Victory, but they never bottle it. Pours with a hazy golden color and a quickly dissapating head. Aroma is of bannana with some citrus and a little clove. Taste has notes of citrus and bannana. Somewhat strong for the style, but very drinkable. Too bad I only got one growler.

The Mad King offers the typical hefe-weizen appearance with the exception that its head is a bit limited (which may be due in part to its alcohol content, but is almost certainly due to it's slightly lower carbonation level). The nose offers some restrained phenolics with a delicate touch of banana/clove and some light spice. The body is medium and it's quite smooth across the palate. It's carbonation level is lower than many German hefeweizens where the CO2 levels seem to average about 3.6 volumes (although they can range from 2.8 up to 5.1 volumes). Higher levels can be too gassy and filling; and even those in the average range with prickle the tongue and give a huge head that makes the pour take a bit longer. The Mad King is in the lower range at around 2.8 volumes and is much smoother across the palate, allowing you to experence more of the beer in your mouth with less "airy" foam from released CO2. The flavor is lightly sweet (not as sweet as a standard weizen), a bit tangy, and exceptionally well-balanced by a bitterness that lies just beneath the surface. It finishes dry with some mild apple-ish fruitiness, a touch of light wheaty malt, a sprinkling of alcohol, and some very delicate spiciness. Quite impressive! Although it seems pretty straightforward at the start, it actually reveals a bit of complexity by the finish. It's reduced sweetness and carbonation level add to its drinkability, although its slightly elevated alcohol does come into play after a few. For fans of the hefeweizen style, this takes it one step further.

A - An unfiltered opaque beauty with a solid meringue head.

S - Spicey, phenolic, flowery, juicey . . .

T - Similar to smell. Alive, spicy with strong phenolics. Rich and complex. Note: As the beer warms however phenolics can go a bit too far (i.e. band-aid, campho phenique)

M - Substantial, thick, rich, layered . . .

D - Highly drinkable as the spice cuts, blends and compliments the overall richness and layeredness of this beer.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy straw yellowish orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head that settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A grainy and floral wheat driven aroma with a scent of yeast, grains, and subtle fruit. Wheat with hints of straw, grains, biscuit, cracker, and Hefeweizen. Hints of clove and bubblegum. Fruit hints of banana, lemon, apple, and orange. Light floral hop presence with hints of spice and grass. A solid wheaty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely bready, grainy, and floral wheat driven taste with notes of grains, yeast, and fruit. Upfront taste of wheat with notes of grains, straw, biscuit, cracker, and Hefeweizen yeast. Notes of bubblegum and clove. Fruit notes of lemon, banana, apple, and light orange. Subtle hop presence with some floral, grassy, and spicy notes. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, creamy, and smooth with a drying finish.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Hefeweizen. Nice combo of bready, spicy, and fruity flavor.

Appears a light, cloudy yellow with a small white head that soon fades. A few traces of lacing are seen.
Smell is of lightly toasted wheat, vanilla, bananas, and citrus with a hint of clove.
Taste is of the aforementioned aromas with a nice yeasty texture that is blended to perfection.
Mouthfeel is warm and smoothly inviting. Silky with a hint of clove and allspice that finishes nice and dry.
Drinkability is great. If you're a fan of wheat brews, this is a must try if for nothing else. The only two places you can get it are at the brewpub and at Ludwig's Garten in Center City, PHI.

Finger licking good.

L: Pours hazy straw gold under a 1” quickly dissipating white foam collar that leaves light lace.
S: Wheat, lemon, citrus, spice and very faint banana.
T: Spice, fruit, citrus, wheat, very faint banana with above average hops. Light tartness.
F: Medium light, has a little bit of the wild yeast texture, medium high carbonation.
O: This blends German ingredients, American hopping levels with Belgian yeast to produce an interesting, refreshing beer.

Victory Mad King's Weisse

Pours a bright unfiltered yellow, soapy white head and some lacing. Aromas of wheat malt, banana, clove, whole flower German hops with a grassy, lightly citric smell. In the taste, much like a standard hefeweizen with banana and clove notes, but alittle more lemony than banana, and with lots of herbal, noble hops chiming in with flavor and bitterness. Leafy, oily, mildly bitter Tettnang and Hersbucker like hops giving it a solid German fingerprint on the hop profile. Tea like, and going well with the bready and biscuity malt character. Mouthfeel is light bodied, crisp and quenching. Overall, Victory has a way of nailing German styles, and this is no different. A nice hoppy hefeweizen that remains a go to when its available.

Pours a clouded gold with a creme head. Looks like a hefe. Smells like a hefe. Funky banana clove-ness. Flavor is good. Smooth and with a good balance of things going on. Just a nice mix of dough, spices, and banana. Feel is smooth. Good balance of carbonation and liquid. Very nicely done. A great drinker.

On-tap at the brewpub.

A - golden in color, nice head retention and good lacing.

S - banana, clove, wheat, typical and classic weiss smell.

T - bright, banana/clove flavor, wheat. Almost as bubble gum esque flavor. A little sweeter than a normal weiss beer, but it works.

M - Medium bodied, slightly chewy. Nice finish and carbonation level.

O - an enjoyable weiss, I would love to see this one available where I live.

on tap a ludwigs: cloudy golden pear topped with a creamy white head. miniscule bubbles struggle to the top. spicy wheat aroma, peppered with hints of clove and banana. light phenolic character. somewhat undercarbonated for the style. smooth and creamy, crisp wheat flavor buttressed by the soft banana and pear flavors. flares somewhat spicy with peppery phenols in the middle. finishes dry and thirst quenching. not the best hefe in the world, but a very nice version, and near the top of my list. i would have liked to see a little more carbonation and mountainous foam on the pour. still quite good.

Served on tap at the Victory Brewery.

Light yellow, not really pale, but rather a golden color with a fair colored haze. The head was very creamy and thick at a solid two fingers with great retention. The foam left heavy trails down the sides, not really dainty enough to be called lacing. This look really good!

The aromas brought me back to center with the typical light fruity banana smells and a hint of spicy clove. You can pick up some of the wheat malt and just a bit of citrus on the nose.

Interesting, this is. It has a light, delicate sense to it but at the same time has a very complicated set of flavors that come through. The wheat malt is noticeable, along with banana, clove, & yeast that typically goes along with it, but there was something on the order of cinnamon or nutmeg that was faint but seemed to bring everything together. Toward the end came some light bitterness, presumably from hops, that seemed to hit just before the finish and then everything ended with a relatively clean finish. Carbonation was fine and abundant and lent itself well to a slightly creamy texture. This was a beauty!

I don't know that I am doing this brew justice with my review. It's not your average hefeweizen and you really just need to experience it to get that wonderful complexity. Very drinkable, very smooth, and very recommended!

A: Pours a lightly hazed straw yellow color with 2+ fingers of head that fades down to a creamy cap

S: Clove and banana right up front, with some yeast presence and other lightly spicy and fruity notes. Standard hefe notes

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the yeasty notes, banana, and clove. Goes into some lightly spicy notes accompanied by a nice fruitiness. Wheat more prevalent in the finish

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation

O: A great example of an American-made hefe. Classic banana and clove steal the show and make for a very refreshing brew. Definitely recommended

Came to me a nice deep golden color with a fairly thick head. Smelled a bit peppery but mostly citrus notes of lemon, and more so, orange. It tasted like a fairly traditional wheat beer but what i really loved about it was it had a somewhat hoppy bite going on. If you've had whirlwind, this is almost the same just with a bit more alcohol and some more complex notes.

Served on tap into a small pilsner glass

A- pours a hazy shade of gold with a one finger white head. I've seen cloudier looking hefeweizens, so this is a decent start

S- faint aroma of banana, but it's not too light. Lets you know it's there.

T- really strong taste of banana in this one. Not overwhelming though, but really tasty

M- a little on the thin side, but that's fine for the style

D- pretty good, though drinking it in February was a little weird...might be a little better during the summer, so it looks like I'm going to have to go to Victory again in a couple of months

Pale golden color-not quite an "off yellow". Small white head on top. Nice spicy aroma-somewhat cloveish and peppery. Crisp and clean tasting. A slight hint of hops. Lemony and citrus like flavors. Slight phenolic taste. Mild banana and clove notes. Very clean in the long run though nicely complex. Good body. Boy I could drink this all day. Light and crisp. I bet the 6.2% would catch up in a hurry. Very, very enjoyable.

This is a great beer all around, as well as a good way to prime your friends off of macros and unto wheats (among others)

Hazy yellow color. nice straw complextion. Not much head to stay, but some lace to go with it.

Sweet smelling, anlway drinkable. Has a nice mix of sweet clove and banana and a good dose of citrus for an after taste.

It is a crisp and clean drink, and can keep you going all day long, regardless of ABV. if you can find some, get it, they really do need to bottle this though!

I made my pilgrimage to Downington after visiting my girlfriend in Collegeville. I had to make the trip complete, a babe and some good beer. If you haven't been to Victory's Brewery and restaurant, I would certainly suggest that you make the trip.

Golden and cloudy, the bar keep poured the beet into the tall pilsner leaving an inch and a half of billowy white head that lingered a long time. A lot longer than I expected.

The hefe weitzen smelled sweet and citrusy. Sweeter than others that I have sampled. This worried me a bit, because I am not one to enjoy overly fruity beers, but I was not let down.

The beer tastes great! Sweet enough that it needs no lemon. As if by design, Mad King's seems to be sweetend to my taste.

Crisp and clean, a light carbonation complicates this otherwise slightly heavy wheat beer.

I had to drive back to see the girl, or I would have had a few more rounds...

In conclusion, drink this if you can find it. I brought home a growler to share with my roomie, another Victory fan.
