Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: WVbeergeek on 08-14-2002

Bavaria’s fabled Ludwig was said to be ‘mad’. The same might be said of us for approaching this German beer style with fistfuls of hops beyond the norm for this style and yeast from Belgium!

Composition
Malt: Imported two-row German malts, including wheat

Hops: Whole flower German hops

ABV: 6.2%

Flavor
High-powered with all German malts and the subtle, spicy complexity of our special yeast, Mad King's Weiss offers a quenching quality that can't be beat.

shared bomber bottle.
This is a fine version of the style that could easily pass for a very good Bavarian hefe. Banana and clove, as expected, but neither is overly prominent.

Delicious... the spicy belgian yeast gives this a nice finish... easy drinking and one of the better hefeweizen's I've ever had

Enjoyed from a 22 oz bomber in a pint glass. This hefeweizen pours a light hazy straw color with a moderate white head of tight beaded bubbles and light lacing from the pooling dissipating foam. Nose of light lemon zest, sweet wheat malts, and a light Belgian yeast characteristic. Flavors are a crisp, lightly acidic wheat flavor with some light lemon flavors and a light spice in the background. Aftertaste is lightly sweet with a medium body and nice moderately carbonated mouth feel.

A solid weizen, although not a lot of the standard notes to a hefe in look, smell, or taste.

12/31....Pours cloudy hazy yellow. Some white foam. Wheaty nose. Mild wheat taste. Chalky, smooth. Small hop bite. Hint of a berry aftertaste.

A solid, sharp, unspectacular but nonetheless tasty weiss beer, the Mad King's has a damn fine name but to my tastes is really only just fine beer. Don't mistake me: it's very drinkable, without many especially glaring flaws; but it's also just not very interesting.

At the very least, however, I'd agree with Victory's claim label that this is a “European-Style White-Ale”, a designation that seems a bit more apt than “hefeweizen,” since it's not as creamy, orange-expressive, or quite as bold and bodied as I expect a good hefeweizen to be; to put it another way, it's more Hoegaarden than Julius Echter. Indeed, the body is a bit foamy and fairly light, the color is a pale yellow dusted with gold, and the flavor-profile, likely resulting from the deployment of Belgian yeast, is pretty damn Wit, to be honest—which, again, isn't deleterious but doesn't really distinguish Mad King's either.

It smells very nice (and Belgian), it looks very nice, it boasts a killer name (and some nice back-label patter), and the ratcheted-up hop-load does the job of keeping the ale crisp and clean-finishing—even a bit nicely bitter, to balance out the healthy dose of wheaty sweetness—but overall there's something lacking and something decidedly less than great about Mad King's … though maybe, with a name like that, balance and high aptitude shouldn't have been expected.
