The beer pours a gold color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It's a maltier version of hefe than the Sunrise. It's not as yeasty and has a bolder malt aroma. The taste is good. It has a wonderful malt flavor that adds a thick mouthfeel and complexity. It's easy drinking with a nice Munich malt content. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This was a bit of disappointment. I've been wanted to try this one for some time. All in all, a good hefe.

Served on tap at the Victory Brewery.

Light yellow, not really pale, but rather a golden color with a fair colored haze. The head was very creamy and thick at a solid two fingers with great retention. The foam left heavy trails down the sides, not really dainty enough to be called lacing. This look really good!

The aromas brought me back to center with the typical light fruity banana smells and a hint of spicy clove. You can pick up some of the wheat malt and just a bit of citrus on the nose.

Interesting, this is. It has a light, delicate sense to it but at the same time has a very complicated set of flavors that come through. The wheat malt is noticeable, along with banana, clove, & yeast that typically goes along with it, but there was something on the order of cinnamon or nutmeg that was faint but seemed to bring everything together. Toward the end came some light bitterness, presumably from hops, that seemed to hit just before the finish and then everything ended with a relatively clean finish. Carbonation was fine and abundant and lent itself well to a slightly creamy texture. This was a beauty!

I don't know that I am doing this brew justice with my review. It's not your average hefeweizen and you really just need to experience it to get that wonderful complexity. Very drinkable, very smooth, and very recommended!

Pours a hazy yellow color with a nice big white head. In the aroma, big dry banana, and just a small hint of spice. In the taste, dry banana, clove, and spices. A smooth and medium mouthfeel and a semi dry banana aftertaste. Good flavors of banana and spices, easy to drink and a good body.

A - An unfiltered opaque beauty with a solid meringue head.

S - Spicey, phenolic, flowery, juicey . . .

T - Similar to smell. Alive, spicy with strong phenolics. Rich and complex. Note: As the beer warms however phenolics can go a bit too far (i.e. band-aid, campho phenique)

M - Substantial, thick, rich, layered . . .

D - Highly drinkable as the spice cuts, blends and compliments the overall richness and layeredness of this beer.

Pours a clouded gold with a creme head. Looks like a hefe. Smells like a hefe. Funky banana clove-ness. Flavor is good. Smooth and with a good balance of things going on. Just a nice mix of dough, spices, and banana. Feel is smooth. Good balance of carbonation and liquid. Very nicely done. A great drinker.

I was able to try Mad King on tap at High Street Grill's Victory promo Tuesday on 5/20/2008. The served it to me in a standard pint glass. I wish they had served it in a Weizen glass, but none were available. You take what you can get.

This Victory Hefe poured not a hazy, but a beautiful murky and bright lemon yellow. I honestly didn't think a Hefe could get this murky. Hazy, yes, but not murky. Sitting on top of this beer was a 3/4 inch creamy head of white foam. This head fo foam had decent retention that left behind foamy white rings and a few spots of white lace around the glass. I can't get over how nice the color of this Hefe really was.

The aroma was plain and simple with malted wheat, cloves, bread, and plenty of ripe bananas. It's just what you look for when it comes to smelling a Hefeweizen.

If I could describe the taste in two words it would interesting and delicious. This Hefe was filled with malted wheat, cloves, nutmeg, a dash of cinnamon, a pinch of yeast, and tons of ripe banana. That was good enough, but at the end, the taste took a Hefe to another level. After the banana, in comes some bitter citrus hops. Where they did they come from? Not too bitter where the hops covered everything up. It was more of a refreshing bitter taste.

I would have to say that this Hefeweizen is more medium bodied than light bodied. The aftertaste was soft with malted wheat and a hint of bitter citrus hops.

When I ordered it, I thought it was just going to be a standard decent Hefeweizen from Victory. Boy, was I surprised to find that out that this beer was really that good! One of the most interesting Hefeweizens I've had lately. Would I order this again? You bet I would! It's something you need to taste for yourself.

On tap, Stuff yer Face event in NJ. Admittedly not a fan of this style, but I do give it credit for representing what it should.

Served on tap at the restaurant.

A: Pale yellow with wheaty head and lacing. Offered and rejected the fruit accompaniment.

S: Wheat and strong spice.

T: Wheaty, a little too much of clove or spice for my personal taste but appreciate the quality there.

M: Good job here, good texture.

D: Honestly surprised to see this beer be as strong as it was - a credit to Victory on that one. Well disguised and drinkable.

Again, not a fan of the style, but I do give them credit from what I think is a good representation. Honestly surprised by the ABV.

On-tap at the brewery.

This beer seems a little off to me. It's too big and sweet for it's own good. The yeast has come through some spice and banana, but the overall flavor is muddled up by the sweetness, ruining the complexity for me. Maybe it's there and I just can't get it.

On tap at the Blue Nile, poure into a Summit Hefe Weizen glass by yours truly.

Cloudy and golden, huge rocky, pillowy head, nice and thick.

Aroma: sweetness, & spice, and the usual ethereal delights found in any good, airy weizen. Cloves get louder, and that banana note rises above. Citrus notes peel out, too, eventually. (bad joke, I admit)

Brisk carbonation, big texture, coats the mouth, tingle of hops...very mellow, with flavors of citrus, banana, low-laying spice. Light-bodied, but substantial and satisfying. Little notes of lemon shine through the layers of wheat, bits of banana take turns on the tongue.

Leaves the palate tidily, with a linger of flavor, very refreshing, and urges a further drink.

Nice one.

On tap at Tuscadora Mill in Leesburg, VA.

Pours a very hazy pale straw with a one finger head that takes a long time to fade to a nice cap. The lacing is thick and sticky, leaving a nice sheet behind.

Smell; lots of cloves and wheat, with a little bit of bananas thrown in. There was a nice lemony citrus, as well as a touch of a peppery spiciness.

Taste; very nice wheat flavor right away, and then fades into the cloves, bananas and lemons. The spiciness that was in the aroma is there, it just took until the beer warmed up to come out. This was also a a little sweet in the finish.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied and very smooth, and the drinkability was really good, as I had no problem consuming a couple of these during dinner.

Holy Presentation, Batman! It came in a tall Weiss glass, plus the head was like marshmallow Fluf, or Jack the Ripper's avatar. The color was a cloudy lemon-yellow with a lot of CO2 bubbles present. The nose had alemony zestiness, a peppery spiciness, and a yeasty mustiness. I wnet fruit-free and for Phatz, having fruit with this beer would have been a classic case of gilding the lily. The mouthfeel was thick and full, almost creamy. I got a lot of banana esters as well as black peppery spice in the mouth. The finish was yeast-driven mustiness, like opening a box full of pulp magazines, like mystery and detective fiction or comic books. I know that smell intimately and this definitely mimicked it.

Served on tap at the restaurant.

A: The ale is a pale yellow color with no haze and a white head that laces nicely. It, unfortunately, was served with a lemon slice that was promptly discarded.

S: The ale has a soft wheaty aroma and a smattering of spices.

T: The ale has a very soft wheat flavor that is accentuated by some spices, notably a clove flavor that lingers long in the drink.

M: Soft and smooth on the palate, this is good for hot summer days.

D: This is misclassified, in my opinion. It is closer to an American Pale Wheat than a hefe. Either way, it is a good refreshing beer that hides its strength well.

On tap at the Victory brewpub. This beer poured a cloudy yellowish body with a thick foamy white head and respectable lacing on the glass. The nose was dominated by some quality spice tones and banana notes as well. The taste also had some good spice notes, cloves, as well as touches of banana and vanilla. Very well put together beer and easy to drink.

Victory- Mad King's Weiss

10 year anniversary party.

Appearance- hazy cloudy yellow with a thcik white frothy head.
Smell- strong spices, clove and cinnimon with the usual banana scent.
Taste- bananas and clove. Strong, but smooth, sugary clove flavor. Like the chewing gum clove.
Mouthfeel- smooth and crisp. light, easy to drink.

Overall- my wife's favorite offering from Victory and 1 of the best Hefe's I've had. Good beer even on a cold Feb. night.

This is a very decent Hefe Weizen. Not to extreme on the bananas in the nose or the taste. Nice and full of flavor though. Its spicy with cloves and vanilla yet overrun by pears and citrus, all balanced it such a manor that nothing seems too extreme. It is simply easy drinking. Bravo - Victory.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

This beer came an orange straw color that was slightly foggy with a small head. Smelled strongly of lemon citrus, a wheat and honey malt and bananas. Tasted of a wheat and oat malt with a nice sweet doughy and creamy yeast that finished with a bit of liquorish and almost peppermint. Mouth feel was medium bodied with a creamy light carbonation. This is a nice beer, but it is an original take on a hefe. Not much cloudiness to the color and the yeast has an odd spiciness. It’s a bit different, but still very tasty.

I made my pilgrimage to Downington after visiting my girlfriend in Collegeville. I had to make the trip complete, a babe and some good beer. If you haven't been to Victory's Brewery and restaurant, I would certainly suggest that you make the trip.

Golden and cloudy, the bar keep poured the beet into the tall pilsner leaving an inch and a half of billowy white head that lingered a long time. A lot longer than I expected.

The hefe weitzen smelled sweet and citrusy. Sweeter than others that I have sampled. This worried me a bit, because I am not one to enjoy overly fruity beers, but I was not let down.

The beer tastes great! Sweet enough that it needs no lemon. As if by design, Mad King's seems to be sweetend to my taste.

Crisp and clean, a light carbonation complicates this otherwise slightly heavy wheat beer.

I had to drive back to see the girl, or I would have had a few more rounds...

In conclusion, drink this if you can find it. I brought home a growler to share with my roomie, another Victory fan.

On-tap at Capital Ale House.

Hazy bright golden-yellow in color with an active, fizzy white head that is killed off by the slice of lemon wedge on the glass. LOTS of fruity esters in the nose, bannanas mostly. Clove and some citrus fruits in the background, along with a bit of bread dough. Flavor is crisp and fruity up front, with a yeasty aftertaste. Bannanas in the flavor, along with some peppery spice, coriander, maybe some orange peel? Very clean finish, with a good mouthfeel. Very drinkable and well-done.

Appears a light, cloudy yellow with a small white head that soon fades. A few traces of lacing are seen.
Smell is of lightly toasted wheat, vanilla, bananas, and citrus with a hint of clove.
Taste is of the aforementioned aromas with a nice yeasty texture that is blended to perfection.
Mouthfeel is warm and smoothly inviting. Silky with a hint of clove and allspice that finishes nice and dry.
Drinkability is great. If you're a fan of wheat brews, this is a must try if for nothing else. The only two places you can get it are at the brewpub and at Ludwig's Garten in Center City, PHI.

Finger licking good.

From the brewery's tap to my german growler, and then in my glass about an hour later.

Appearence is very good for the style, a surprisingly bright yellow, deeply clouded, with a friendly, puffy head settled in the top of my weizen glass. So far, so good.

Aroma is clean, and subtle, with notes of bananas, vanilla cream soda, and just a little hint of lychee. Very cool and mild. Good stuff.

Taste is again, very mild, but spot-on. Bananas, fresh and a little green come across the palate first, with a cool, dissappearing finish. No lingerer, this brew. There is a surprising lack of clove notes here, but there is still a spiciness, brought by notes of coriander, allspice, and the like. Cloves...probably a bit, but not that featured. I'm sure they would deny it, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that there are actual spices used in the brew.

Mouthfeel is smooth, highly yet softly carbonated, and frothy. Very good.

Drinkability is right up there as well. The mildness of this brew (despite the ABV) makes it a perfect sessioner.

A well done and nuanced version of a difficult style. I prefer the traditional versions from over the pond better, but the freshness of this makes a great case for picking up a growler (which I almost do every time I'm up there). Here Victory shows why they're a german brewery first, and everything else second. Prosit!

Appearance: Hazy gold beer with a small, white, frothy, mostly diminishing head. Only a small amount of lacing.

Smell: Fairly typical wheat smell. Lightly phenolic with hint of clove and banana

Taste: Sweet, but not as sweet as I expected. There’s a slight bitterness along with citrus rind, banana and vanilla. The finish is average length and dry with the touch of chalkiness and alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium body, watery texture, low carbonation.

Drinkability: Because this isn’t as sweet as most other hefes, I find it more drinkable and satisfying. I’m not even a fan of the style and I still enjoyed this beer and hope to have it again sometime.

On-Tap at Victory. Dark yellow gold with a huge off-white head of foam that leaves excellent lacing. The aromas are very spicy and a little reminiscent of their golden monkey ale. I smell coriander, orange peel, and banana as well as some other spicy German yeast notes. The taste is spicy up front and yeasty in the middle with a lovely wheaty aftertaste as well. This is a very strange German hefe, that is more of a hefe wit mix than anything else. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth and the drinkability is nice. This sure is a unique offering from Victory.

Hazy yellow in color with a nice white 1" head. Spotty lace develops on the sides of the glass. The aroma is of citrus and spice. The flavor can be described as quenching and slightly lip puckering as the citrus, banana, clove, bitterness, and a hint of pepper are big while the wheat tried to soften the tones down. Some hints of yeast were also detectable.

Mouthfeel was crisp at the start and finish. The citrus and spices lingered briefly on the tongue after swallowing. Nicely drinkable and thirst quenching too.
