Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an Aventinus glass.
A--Deep caramel hazy body, kind of reddish orange, with plenty of yeast swirling around in there. Fizzy cola head was considerable--three fingers--at first, but died almost instantly and left no skim or lacing.
S--Invitingly complex. Tangy lemon wheat undertones behind a blast of coaxed out esters: strong phenolic character, with some mentholated medicinal qualities, as well as a plummy thing in the middle. Smells sweet, herbal, and tangy.
T--Doesn't quite live up to the hype of the nose, but still not bad at all. The plums give way to an almost full on frontal assault of phenols, to provide a huge incense-tinged flavor profile. Lots of clove and cinnamon type things going on--very autumnal in that way. Unfortunately, these are all wrapped in an oily, buttery package that I don't really care for and hint at diacetyls. The yeast takes center stage until the end, when you catch a glint of that wheat bite that tugs at your nose at first. Finish is all grain--not just wheat but crackery barley as well. Just wish there was more dark fruit in this. Would have made it truly unique.
Mouthfeel was almost perfect. Carbonation was lively--bubbles shot up to the surface throughout the tasting, making the surface of the beer look like a puddle being rained on--but what did it for me was the chewiness. Loved it. Drinkability? Sure, but this is a pretty hot brew--at 8.7 you're not gonna down a sixer in a sitting. Or shouldn't, I don't think. But you might want to.
Although I've only tasted two domestic weizenbocks-this and GL Glockenspiel--this one is definitely my favorite. Kudos to Victory for hauling out a unique Fall seasonal.
