With all the discussion lately of whether or not certain beers are too hoppy or not, I present to you Old Horizontal. I am admittedly a maltman not a hophead, but I can appreciate hops if done 'right'. This beer to me, is the epitome of a balanced American barleywine. The hops are in balance not overdone (my definition of overdone hops are bigfoot and old crustacean).
Pours a fairly dark brownish-orange with no appreciable head, however an island of small bubbles sits undisturbed in the center, even after multiple sips.
Nose is not that big, not that I can smell well anyway...a whiff of hops and alcohol.
Taste is, like I said, quite balanced. Hearty caramel-ly malts and hops that serve to balance and show off a little in the finish, but not too much. Alcohol is well hidden at all temperatures (but please dont drink this cold!!). Overall fairly bold, but not excessively so. Body is a solid medium and imo, ever-so-slightly disappointing. I believe it has changed slightly since I had it about 2 years ago, at which time I recall it having a fuller body. Still very smooth, however.
Due to the well-hidden alcohol, its surprisingly drinkable.
I may be crazy, but swear different bottles in the same 6-pack have slightly different levels of hoppiness. I'd say have at least a couple before making a judgement :)
