Best before Oct 25. Light color, slightly cloudy, little head. Nice clean smell, bit of Belgium, but not outstanding. Grain, straw, maybe a little grassy taste. Really nice mouthfeel and drinkability. I'd prefer something a little more bitter for sessions, but this is a great summer thirst-quencher.

We pour a brew of pale straw into our Bell’s Weizen glasses. It holds a hearty two finger head of white, well-retained bubbles, showing great retention. Thick shelves of lacing are left as it slowly fizzes away. No haze is noted, but tiny flecks of sediment are present throughout. Carbonation appears to be mild, but with fat bubbles rising to the top. The aroma gives bright zest of lemon and orange flesh and rind, with bright clovey phenols, chalky wheatiness, black pepper and cinnamon spice, light banana ester sweetness, rubbery bite, gingerbread warmth, sourdough and pumpernickel breadiness, authentic coconut milk, black licorice, fresh mint leaf, and vanilla wafer. Our first impression is that there is nice spice to the flavoring, but the beer is otherwise rather light and fluffy. As we sip, the taste begins with stark Belgian yeastiness, white and pale malt base, clove and cinnamon spiciness, chlorine chemical bite, sugared orange slices, sesame seed, green tea, mustard and fennel seed, and lemon wipes. The middle peaks with fresh squeezed lemon juice, white sugar, sloppy wet wheatiness, raw pine cones, aluminum metallics, cooked caramel sweetness, continued orange zest, phenolic plastics, margarita-tequila lime, and musk. Cinnamon and clovey spice, plastics, eucalyptus, chamomile tea herbals, wheaty breadiness, arugula, walnut oils, cork, herbal floral hops, bright lemon juiciness, and penicillin chemicals. The aftertaste breathes of wet and cold wheat, sweat, salt water taffy, dusty mineral, ginger and garlic powders, lure rubbers, cloying sweetness of iced banana bread, breakfast tea tannins, lemon wedges, tinny metallics, white sugar, and pink cotton candy. The body is light, and the carbonation is light. Each sip gives decent cream and froth, with lesser slurp, smack, or cleanliness to its finishing pop. The mouth is watered and cooled, being left wet, with no real puck, chalk, or astringency. The abv is appropriate, and the beer glugs back easily.

Overall, the best thing about this beer is its aroma. Here things are kept in check with warmth of spice and heartiness of grain. These are lost a bit through the flavor, however, with things lightening up a touch too much, becoming diluted and lost amongst the wetness of the wheatiness. The spice base laid down through the aromatics is thus lost and depreciated. Otherwise, for a light sipper of a Wit, this guy goes back smooth, ultimately making it easy to appreciate. While this is not our new favorite Victory offering, it does the style well, and will sit against most of its competitors.

Date tasted: July 5, 2013... Glassware: Rare Vos shaker... Occasion: camp week #1 in the books, and reviewing an old friend....Appearance: pale straw haze; thin off-white head that stills quickly; appears easy-drinking but not overly attractive ... Aroma: tart citric bouquet, with orange and lemon scents softly against some pepper--more intriguing combination than the average summer wit... Palate: a soft yet firm mouthfeel, smooth at the teeth and lacking all (any?) presence at the throat--mega-refreshing, as recalled... Taste: a bit of pepper sneaks in, but far and away a doughy, orange twist that easily sifts down the throat; not complex, but enough profile to compel... Overall: An old friend indeed--this was the first beer I found that fit the easy-drinking summer plan once out of college; surprised I had not reviewed it yet, I had to go back to it; for better (or worse), a case of this could vanish in a mere day or two; better than the sum of its parts....
