Excellent example of a Baltic Porter that has been lagered correctly; clarity is excellent, not murky and dense like its British brethren. Imposing two fingers of tannish head top off a really nice looking brew.
Softly roasted barley notes do their best to shine through but are unfortunately stamped out by an incessant soapy odor. I'd love to blame the glass but it's the second beer I've had out of it today and I've only rinsed, not washed. Biscuity qualities do surface after a while but I'm not sure a nice out-of-place aroma makes up for an iffy aroma profile.
Flavor is a vast improvement over the nose with a thick rush of chocolate and dark (prune) fruit immediately. Roasted qualities surface but the emphasis is definitely on the molasses-like sweetness that is such a major component of the style.
Thickness is good but they downplay the carbonation a bit too much for their own good. Still, a nice and unexpected stab at the style from one of my favorite breweries.
