Saw this hiding on the bottom shelf at Jenny St., and had to pick it up. Also, curiosity forced me to find out what I rated HopDevil: 3.3, B-. Let's see how the "wild" version goes.
I popped the cork, then wrote the above. In that short time, foam has poked it's head out of the bottle, about a half inch a leaning, tan foam. WOW, first pour started well enough, until foam just filled my glass. I'd say about 1mm of beer, and 5 inches of head. Slowly dropping, so pouring again. Better this time. Amber colored liquid, with a very active tan head, highlights are golden.
Pineapple leaps up my nose, and pulls a smile up. Some light citrus, clean. A wee bit of barnyard funk underneath too.
Hops definitely have a fruit facet, the lemon and tropical fruits aboud, but a spicy earty flavor too. Malt flavor is of lightly toasted bread, and while it's tasty, I wouldn't mind a bit more here. Not bad though, as I suppose the other ingredients are the brewers focus. Brett is the other key player here, and it has added a crispness to the body, and a dryness to the finish. The mouthfeel is also a little slick.
I quite liked this beer, and I will look for it the next time I'm at the Jennifer St. Market. I would love to see a barrel aged version sometime in the future also. I would buy that as well! Cheers!
