Very interested to try this one. Pours looking almost like an IPA, amber in color, relatively clear, but with a giant foamy head, a la a robust Belgian ale. Wow - lots of aroma jumping off this one. I can't say I drink Hop Devil all the time, but the signature spicy notes of hops are there, a tad of citrus, and a wonderful floral aroma from the brett. The flavor is a complex mix as well. Hops, mild and spicy, slightly citrusy, and an awesome flowery, fruity bouquet of wild goodness. A bit ripe and pungent. Slightly musty and dry in the finish, mildly funky. Want more. Wow, again. I've become quite a fan of the Belgian IPA as it is now pretty much an official style, but this is quite different. I've never had a beer where the hops and wild yeast are both sort of the main character and really mixing the flavors in the overall profile of the beer. I am totally into this.

Nose is appropriately funky. Starts with the dry bouquet of a cheap cologne and grows medicinal like latex gloves. Some peppery spices and menthol. A little malt. Smells nice.

Pours a deep orange with yellow highlights, moderate clarity, nice big creamy foamy head. Looks wonderful.

Flavor kicks off with a tart hoppy twang, it doubles back to medicine and plastic, then some dry/earthy hop bitterness, cool menthol with hints of tobacco, leafy freshness, peppery spice and herbs, and then some malt - not much, but enough. Not highly hoppy, more funky. Finishes dry and yeasty. Creamy smooth mouthfeel is a nice juxtaposition to the funkiness.

Wonderful beer. It's a soft and prim, yet funky and wild. Another homerun for Victory.

Ok, so I am not entirely familiar with the Belgian IPA style AT ALL. So I will review this beer with that in mind. But I am really intrigued in the beers with Brett, so this is exciting, and only my second Brett beer.

A: Pours a slightly transparent/slightly hazy amber/copper color that produces a MASSIVE head, typical in Belgians. I could write a review about the head alone, but I assume other Belgian IPA's may be similar...Really airy and fluffy head that just keeps expanding. So far, looks delicious.

S: The first note I get is a Belgian spiciness...clove, coriander, banana, pear, spearmint and bubblegum. Very enticing. I am getting a little bit of funk from the Brett (horsey/barnyard type stuff) almost like moldy blue cheese in a way. Really interesting.

T: Pretty different from the nose. The flavor profile has a much more noticeable hop presence (I don't know what kind- seems like warrior and cascade), and the malt backbone and Belgian spice really balances this well. If you try hard, this beer has a lot of complexity, especially when it warms to about 5-10 degrees above serving temp. The funkiness of the Brett becomes more apparent as the temp warms as well. Also picking up some light fruits, as well as some clove honey! Very very nice!

MF/D: This beer is pretty viscous, very smooth and easy to drink, long Belgian spice finish with a slight twang of funk

Overall, very nicely done, very creative, and complex. Looking forward to trying this again, as well as other Brett beers.

Pours a clear amber gold with a sudsy head that lasts to the end, leaving ample lacing on the glass.

Refreshing smells of brown sugar green hops, wet hay, and a little horseblanket.

Sweet malt flavors with lemony citrus and fresh bread/biscuit notes. The sweet malt flavors interact with the citrus on the palate to make the taste quite interesting. Ends dry with bitterness that is also a bit salty. The Brett used is working nicely with the citrus hops to create a mild acid dimension that is perfectly balanced by the German malts.

Mouthfeel is mildly thick and creamy, yet very refreshing due to the citrus/Brett acidity and the fine prickly carbonation. At 6.7 ABV, this is a beer I could drink all day at a summer picnic with German pretzels and mustard and be quite happy.

No date on the bottle, which seems odd for Victory. Poured into a tulip.

Pours a honeyed amber orange with a huge tan head that has a middling retention time. Lots of apparent carbonation. Little lace.
Aroma is lemon and grass with a sweaty funk. A slight woodiness. This is all overlaid with a perfume-floral character.
Taste starts light then moves into a pleasantly odd funk. This combines with a sturdy bitterness in the finish.
Medium mouth with a filling carbonation.

I really enjoy this brew. I can just sniff it all evening, but the drinking is excellent as well. This bottle had a bit more funk in the finish than I remember, but knowing the store where I purchased this it's been "cellared" for a while there.

A 1/4 pint (approximately) served at the brewpub in Downingtown.

A: The ale is an amber brew, orange and brown, with a nice-sized head that lingers through the first 1/3 of the glass.

S: The aroma has the hallmarks of HopDevil, biting citrus and caramel malts, with the added touch of funky brettanomyces. The ale smells like Orval on hop steroids.

T: The ale has the intense funkiness of a year old Orval. The malts and hops seem to be happy to take the backseat and allow the brett to shine. The taste is yeasty and dry, making me instinctively grab for another sip. The barnyard funkiness is an excellent addition that really augments the overall HopDevil experience.

M: Dry gamey tartness is the calling card of this ale. The decision to add brett to HopDevil is inspired, to say the least.

D: The alcohol level is moderate and never escapes the the funky body. A real treat to drink.

750mL corked and caged bottle into a Duvel snifter. A soft pour produced an abundant frothy head that was very slow to diminish. Aroma was a nice blend of funky spice, Earthy hops and the German malts that are familiar to Hop Devil. Taste was an absolute plethora of flavor, crisp citrus hops, funky Brett sourness and sweet malts dance nicely together and leave a nice sour bitterness on the tongue. The beer is quite light and refreshing with decent carbonation and is very refreshing. This one was even more enjoyable than I expected, one I will certainly love to try again and again.

Served in a 16oz pilsner glass.

Like the HopDevil it's based on, it has a nice reddish-brown hue. It generates a sizeable head, and if not for that and the slightly finer composition of that head, you'd never know it wasn't a HopDevil just by looking at it.

Once you smell it, though, you know you've got something different here. The hop aroma is muted somewhat by the musty funk from the Brett yeast. It's bright and earthy all at once.

Wow, this is an IPA? Sure, the citrusy bitterness is there, but the yeast used in this brew brings a mellow balance to the equation. If you only consider the hops and the malts in a beer's taste profile, this beer will change your tune. It's hard to believe that this is related to the HopDevil at all. I actually prefer this wild version.

The new yeast brings with it a finer mouthfeel. It's still got the stickiness from the malts, but that stickiness is countered by the new carbonation profile. Definitely an improvement over the HopDevil.

I could drink this beer all night. Everything is so much more balanced with the funky characteristics of the Brett blending with the hops. The alcohol is well-hidden in this new recipe, too.

I've had this on-tap and from a bomber. On tap, it's a little more earthy while from the bottle it has a hint of sourness. I recommend trying both versions to see what you like better.

If I were to have one main complaint, it would be that the WildDevil, in bottle form at least, is extremely overpriced. If the only thing that's different in the recipe is the yeast, there's no excuse to charge 3x the price for a case of WilDevil over that of a HopDevil. Even at the brewery, a pint of Wild Devil is priced on par with that of a HopDevil.

All-in-all, WildDevil is the most interesting (and successful) new beer Victory has produced in a very long time. I would go so far as to say that it no longer qualifies as an American IPA anymore: the Brett completely changes the characteristics of the HopDevil it's based on. Perhaps it's better suited in the 'Belgian IPA' or even 'Wild Ale' categories.

Appearance: A delightful and unusual dark honey amber, topped by the characteristic Belgian two fingers of fine, white foam.

Smell: Your knows is well aware of this beer's presence long before you raise it to your lips. A clean, sharp, cutting sweet/sour resin that whispers it's arrival before it fills your nose.

Taste: The pervasive sour of the Brett is less acrid, smoother than one might expect, but it establishes the taste and character of this beer. Enough sweet to balance the still sharp, mediciny hops of this 10-month old bottle. A surprisingly well-balanced juggling act of unusual and assertive yet pleasant flavors.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and light blanket over the tongue, lingering.

Drinkability: At 6.7%, one wouldn't necessarily want to turn to this beer as a quencher, but the character of the beer tempts one to. There is nothing in this beer's character that tells you after one or two, "that's enough of that".

The color is very hazy and tan. The smell is of sourness almost a gouze smell in there and hops of course. Taste is very hoppy at first but it leaves quickly followed by some citrus and then the sourness. Very good, alcohol hidden well, one of the best of Victory's beers.

The bomber that this beer came in was wonderfully labeled with and intriguing introduction to the contents on the back, and things only got better as he wire cage was removed and cork pulled. The body looked typical of IPAs with an orange amber color and slight cloudiness, but the head atop was much larger and wend down very slowly, leaving specks of lace around the glass. The aroma was very Brett driven and supported by complimentary hops. The spicy, herbal, and floral smells were prominent, and a bit of citrus was present as well. The taste was tart, tangy, and earthy. The Brett was pretty dominant over the hops, which here played a supporting role. Surprisingly there was little bitterness, and some sweetness poked through in the middle of the sip before the fully Brett driven finish. The thick head provided a very creamy feel. I felt that this beer could have used quite a bit more hops to really shine. May be a Wild Wallop would be an even more delicious offering. Otherwise this was a fantastic melding of styles.

I thought this beer was excellent. It poured a bright red color with mountains and mountains of head. Aroma is pure wild ale, with lots of barnyard funkiness accompanied by some pleasant sweet and sour notes. This beer has an astringent mouthfeel appropriate for the degree of sourness present. This beer was also pretty drinkable for having sourness and funkiness to it. It was really good.

I bought this bottle at Jungle Jim's in Fairfield, OH. I'd highly recommend it.

On tap at eh brew-pub. I was fortunate to get this literally minutes before it kicked.

This review is basically a comparison versus the excellent HopDevil.

A - Color is lighter and cloudier than the regular HopDevil. Head and lace are similar which is to say very good.

S - American IPA all the way. Versus the regular HopDevil the aroma is very similar, though I found it to be not a hop forward.

T - Still very similar to the original, though again I think slightly smoother and less forward. The real difference is in the finish, the brett comes through with a slightly sour ending and a bit of funk. I am a fan of the original but this improves upon it, doesn't just change it.

M - A bit fuller bodied than the original even though the carbonation seems to have suffered a bit. Very nice.

D - I was less than halfway through this when another in my party ordered one and was told they were out. I can't begin to describe how much I wanted another...

750 mL bottle

A: Deep amber under a very large off white head. OK lace, not too much retention.

S: A mix of hops and yeasty funk. There's a certain citrus mix which is surrounded by a funky apple and earthy tone. A bit of sweetness there.

T: The funk hits you right up front before finishing a hoppy, slightly less funky. Bitterness is up there. A bit of citrus in the middle. The wildness is much more "wild" in the taste department. I'm having a hard time distinguishing any apple or other fruity flavor. Mostly an earthy character. And even with all that, the malt backbone still manages to poke its head in. Very nice

M/D: Carbonation is very high and prickly, but helps to give the body a very light feel. A certain dryness to the beer, although it is ultimately bitter. Drinkability is pretty good on this one. A nice brew for sure, and the low ABV means you have a few even if the wildness means you aren't throwing them back too fast. Good beer.

Poured from a corked, botle conditioned bottle into a snifter. Bottle reads "Bottled on March 27, 2009." Poured on May 4th.

Note: The style listed here is "American IPA," but this is definitely more of an American Wild Ale, and I'm reviewing it as such.

Popped the cork and was blasted with brettanomyces funkiness even before pouring.

A - Pours light amber and fairly clear. Thick and creamy off-white head, that doesn't last too long. Leaves nice trails of lacing down the side of the glass.

S - Definite brett funk. I've never spend much time around horses, but my girlfriend attests that it does indeed smell like horse, so I guess that rumor about brett is true. There's some citrus hops hiding behind that funk. Although they're huge in the regular hop devil, they're overpowered here.

S - First and foremost is the "wow, that's a funky beer." The wild yeast character jumps out at the first sip. A slight malt sweetness follows this up, along with citric hops. Finishes with a nice toasty dry kick.

M - Fairly light bodied and crisp. Easy to drink, but very complex.

D - Very drinkable. I'm a big fan of Hop Devil, and I'm a big fan of wild ales, so this is great.

Overall: The label claims its fermented "completely with brettanomyces," which gives it an absolutely huge wild-ale flavor. Fortunately, the base beer is big enough to stand up to the funk from the yeast. There's not much subtlety in this beer, but if you like wild ales and IPAs, it's great.

I've had this on draft before and I highly recommend trying the bottle as well. The wild character of the brett comes through many times stronger in the bottle(at least in my minimal experience)

I split a 750ml bottle of WildDevil over a mix plate of meats, cheeses, fish, veggies, bread and oil. I'll tell you, it won't be the last time I do that.

Being relatively new to the Brett scene I don't quite have the vocabulary to precisely describe the perfume-like funk in the aroma and taste but it melds fantasticly with the hoppiness of the already stellar HopDevil. The full-mouthed flavor begs to be savored. I truly enjoyed every sip and the palate cleansing carbonation made every bite like the first. Man oh Man.

The carbonation and strong complex flavors force you to slow down a little to appreciate this truly unique concoction.

Find some..you will be rewarded

Bottle poured into a goblet. 2 finger, fluffy head. Good lacing. Dark amber in color w/ hints of ruby, clear.

Smell was floral and soft aromas. Slightly funky from the Brett with a mild cherry presence.

Taste had a mellow maltiness. Nice soft bitterness w/ citrusy and floral hops. Great Brett presence. Good amount of funkiness w/ a nice tartness. Mild lingering bitterness with hints of cherry-tarness.

Mouthfeel was light with good carbonation. Crisp finish.

Drinkability was good as well. Flavors blend great. Not to bitter or tart, fairly clean finish. Drinks like a lighter beer.

Excellent beer in my opinion. Actually is refreshing and light.

A - Giant, four finger head of off-white foam on top of a clear, reddish-brown body. The rocky head settles slowly and leaves dense, even lace on the glass as it settles down.

S - Strong, funky wild yeast aroma; distinctly brettanomyces with notes of damp earth, soft cheese, and apricots. Some toasted and caramel malts and, surprisingly, just a hint of fruity hops.

T - Toasty malt and light caramel up front with lots of powdery, funk that is strongly reminiscent of camembert cheese. Some pine hops show up very briefly towards the finish and leave moderate bitterness to compete with the funk.

M - Medium-thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Well, this is a strange one. For some reason, the hops are not nearly as prevalent as I would have expected and they blend in strange and not entirely unpleasant way with the brett funk. Unlike the the hop flavor, the bitterness is not seriously diminished and it is an unusual counterpoint to the wild yeast; a combination I have not encountered before. The net effect of the fruitiness from the yeast and hops combined with the bitterness is eerily similar to a full-flavored soft-ripened cheese like brie or camembert.

Poured into a Brooklyn Flute, no bottled on date or best by date on this particular bottle, but it is definitely a 2009 bottle based on purchase date. Hazy golden amber, about 9 or so SRM, big rocky effervescent foam stand. Head is slightly off white.

Aromas are big fruity mix of hops and brett. Lemon citrus, lemon rind, pink grapefruit. Spicy floral. Some faint sweetness remains, light biscuit note and a little pure cane sugar character. Substantially different from Hop Devil. Some pomegranate and peach.

Flavor is flush with peach, mango, lemon and grapefruit. Faint amounts of malt sweetness, notes of chardonnay and earthy oak like notes. The fruity yeast induced esters and hops dominate the palate. Tart sharp bitterness.

The mouthfeel is noticeably thinner than Hop Devil as to be expected. Finish is very dry and refreshing.

Very drinkable and certainly a good warm weather quaffer. Brett done extremely well.

Bottled 6/11/09, drank 4/4/10. Poured into a New Belgian Globe.

Hazy coppery amber body. Enormous ivory head with good retention. It almost falls into the gusher category. A little spotty lacing

Big pear aroma that is also a bit lemony. Fruity. Some hop aroma is still present. Spicy in the nostrils. Fain grassiness, but not like cut grass. Hard to put into words. Simply awesome.

Starts fruity and spicy like a fresh fruit salad, with a white pepper like spiciness accompanied by a decent bitterness. Some maltiness becomes evident mid-palate and softens the initial onslaught. Not really much sourness. A tiny bit of astringency in the aftertaste. Bitterness and spiciness linger into the finish. As it warms everything kind of mellows a bit.

Medium bodied. A little oily and resinous. Spot on carbonation in the mouthfeel for the style (annoying to pour though). A 750mL was a good amount, but I could have gone for more. The alcohol slowly crept up on compared to other beers of similar strength - it was kind of weird. Didn't feel much at first.

Overall EXCELLENT. A must-have for anyone who likes Belgians or Hop Devil.

750ml bottle into Duvel tulip. Bottled on June 10th, 2009, and drank May 3rd, 2010. As a sidenote, I like the tension between "I need this fresh, it's an IPA," and "Let it sit, I need that brett action."

Appearance: Predictably, the bottle was a mild gusher. Careful pour down the side of the glass yields a two inch, rocky, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves occasional spots of lacing. Beer pours a hazy amber.

Smell: Some grapefruit hops (still!), a grape note, and lots of brettanomyces influence--it's leathery, tangy, and funky. Beginning to think that putting brett in an IPA is a good idea. Smell develops with time and warmth, with some lemony funk and other notes emerging. Smell is drawing me in. HopDevil--which I only just tried, and it was fresh--had an aroma that was too faint. That's not the case here at all; in your face brett, just as I like.

Taste: First sip: immediate hit of hop bitterness, big brett flavors (cologne, leather, tanginess, funk), and HopDevil's respectable malt backbone. I'm immediately sold; putting brett into HopDevil isn't a good idea, it's a great idea. As I get deeper in, the tangy, funky flavors vary and intensify, while the big hop bitterness stays strong, and the malt backbone battles to not be overcome by the brett (it's losing the battle, but putting up an admirable fight).

What else is there to say? This tastes exactly like you'd expect and want it to, knowing the description of the beer. The brett is in your face, but there's a lot of HopDevil characteristics staying strong underneath it. If that sounds good to you, I guarantee that you'll enjoy this flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with lots of carbonation. The flavor is strong enough that the heavy carbonation isn't a problem. Lingering bitterness and tartness. No alcohol heat.

Drinkability: The alcohol is completely masked, and the taste is very good. The aggressive flavors and feel could be a bit much, but this is a beer I'll have no trouble finishing and will definitely return to.

Drinking Wild Devil reminds me of drinking Rogue's John John Dead Guy Ale. I don't like Dead Guy Ale. I don't particularly like HopDevil either (I like it more than Dead Guy, but it's one of my least favorite IPAs). Get experimental and throw Dead Guy into whiskey barrels, and suddenly I love it. Throw some brett into HopDevil, and the same thing happens.

Notably, it's not just that it's an IPA with brett. It's a very bitter IPA with (in my opinion) too big a malt backbone, with brett, and that combination works wonderfully. Despite my ambivalence toward HopDevil, I'm impressed that it stands strong underneath the huge influence of the different yeast.

Overall, this beer is a great idea, with great execution.

Pours a deep clear amber orange with a big pillowy full thick white head.

Very assertive ripe banana with cooked peaches in the nose. Back label indicates yeast is completely Brettanomyces but there is simply no Brett character in the nose, and I'm very sensitive to Brett (and I like it.) None here but a wonderful floral and fruit character - no Brett funk whatsoever. I don't know if this is good or bad; I do know that this beer is a winner.

Mouthfeel is rich and creamy and very well balanced. Mouthfeel is very inviting and indicates a very well made product.

Flavors complex and layered with a fruit/malt front, to a bitter hop citrus middle to a full burnt toast, roasted grain and light coffee bitter finish that goes on to a final finish of layered malt.

This is a very well made and delicious drink and inviting all around. Full character, layers and flavors come out best as the beer warms to a "cool room" temperature. Nice effort.

A: amber/orange color with a nice finger thick head that remained

S: hops, citrus, and that sour wild yeast smell that I have come to love, reminds me of those great Russian River beers like Supplication

T: you can really taste the wild yeast which gives the beer a nice sour flavor, and it has a bitter/hoppy/citrus backbone like your typically IPA which is a good compliment

M: very smooth and light bodied for an IPA, and I also got a carbonated sensation on my tongue which I attribute more to the sourness than anything

D: wild ales are one of my favorite beers so I had to try this one as it sounded like an interesting mix (IPA + Wild yeast) and I am also also a huge Victory fan...and it did not disappoint

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip glass. Bottled April 22nd, 2009, opened December 16th, 2010.

Appearance-Little bit of a gusher, this one poured a slightly hazy orange copper color, with an enormous beige head of dense, moussy foam. pretty good retention with nice lacing.

Aroma-Intense Brett-y aromas abound here. Sour, apple-cidery, light citrus (lemon), barnyard are the main aromas that I pick up. There's some light citrus/pine aromas from the hops, but the wild yeast aromas dominate. Smells great.

Flavor-The IPA character shows through much more in the flavor. Lightly tart and barnyardy up front, but then some of the citrus/pine hops and caramel malt show through in the middle, before being overtaken again by the Brett flavors in the finish. Quite dry in the finish, and a little bit tart.

Mouthfeel-Medium light body is highly enriched by insane carbonation. I'm assuming that this carbonated so high because of the long period of bottle conditioning with brett (which also leads to the dryness and thinner body from high attenuation). Effervescent.

A fantastic concept, this one reminds me of a gueuze, with the base IPA barely showing through in the palate. Personally, I really liked this one, and found it quite refreshing.

First off, I totally dig badass beers with low alky. And a big F you to everyone else. You're just damn drunkies! period

This brew pours up with a murky deep rust color and a spectacular fluffy ivory crown. great lacing on my dixie cup.

the nose is great. Immediate scent of brett and yeast and funk, followed up by mild fruits, figs, cherries, apricots. then comes in the floral hops. very nicely balanced.

the taste was not as smooth as the aroma but it was still damn good. I taste brett funk, big bitter spicy hops, hay, light earth, more mild fruits.

nicely done. full bodied, Belgian style carbo. A damn good afternoon delight...
