It’s arguable that our menacingly delicious HopDevil has always been wild. With bold German malts and whole flower American hops, this India Pale Ale is anything but prim. But add a touch of brettanomyces, the unruly beast responsible for the sharp tang and deep funk found in many Belgian ales, and our WildDevil emerges completely untamed. Floral, aromatic hops still leap from this amber ale, as a host of new fermentation flavor kicks up notes of citrus and pine. Pour yourself a glass today—if you dare.

Different tasting. Yeast overpowers hops.

750ml bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Crystal clear Amber-orange color. Two fingers of bubbly white head. Whisky rings of lacing.

S: Floral hops, lemon zest, green and herbal, caramel and candy shell malt base, pithy, yeasty Brett funk.

T: Lemonhead candy, candy apple shell, toast, green hops, lemon zest, herbal spiciness, bretty funk throughout. Moderate bitterness. Funk and dank herbal bitterness on the finish.

M: Medium-thick body. Full and creamy. Light scrubbing carbonation. Light astringency.

O: Yeah, it's pretty much what I expected a bretted hop devil to taste like. It's still pretty sweet. It would be interesting to see if it would really dry out with years of age, but I'm not curious enough to stash a bottle if I'm being honest. It's a strangely enjoyable brew that I never yearned for but I'm glad I got to taste.

Bottled June 2014 not so old really. Into the beer boot.

A - No sediment which is amazing since I thought with 7 months on this bottle it would have some floaties. Just some haziness to the typical amber brown color of an IPA. MASSIVE head a full 2 inches that takes a while to die down. Excellent lacing.
S - Smell is decent the bitter hops of the devil have taken a back seat to some funky straw and sour lemon from the Brett which is actually very strong smelling.
T - In a way the bitter hops and funky Brett cancel each other out to just some chalky yeast flavor and a Twang of bitterness.
M - Smoother than Hops Devil in my opinion it takes some of the edge off but the base beer is still pretty strong.

Overall it makes me kind of intrigued that they can add Brett to an IPA and am kind of surprised they didn't try it again to a more citrus/pineapple hop type beer like Dirt Wolf. Maybe they will read this and get idea's!

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass. Label says Bottled On: 11 Jun 2014

A- Pours a hazy medium amber color with a 3/4 inch light tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- The Brett funk is certainly there but it's not as prominent as I remember it being in the old version of this beer. It's a cleaner funk, not as dank but pleasing nonetheless and the mild hop presence that's still there after all these months combine with it and makes a somewhat fruity bouquet. Kind of a soily aftertaste.

T- Tangy, bright Brett character that continues the fruity theme plus a moderate hop bitterness that lingers. Slightly medicinal.

M- A bit sharp and dry with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- Definitely not as much Brett as when they first came out with this beer but it's enjoyable enough. A shame because this used to be my favorite Victory beer.
