Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip bulb glass. Bottled on June 11th 2014.
Appearance: Dark maple brown with hints of redness. Murky, dark and cloudy, but no sediment. 2 finger head, slighlty tan, off white, decent retention.
Smell: Earth and pine, citrus and tropical fruit smell that is dominated by a funky leathery overtone, like an old cabbie seat. Smell is still very bright and vibrant.
Taste: Hops and malt like a classic ipa that is smothered by brett flavor, slightly sour with very light clove spice, grass, smoky peat, toasted bread, with lemon and peach finish that intertwines nicely with the brett flavors. Well balanced although the base beer has been covered up, it still shoots through in patches. The more I taste it, the more I am getting the brett (yeah horse blanket!) punching out in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-to-light body with light stickiness towards the finish. Light carbonation. Smooth with some medium-light astringency.
Overall: An enjoyable beer that I would qualify as something other than a "Belgian IPA". Pretty much just a simple IPA (Hopdevil) with a good deal of brett covering up the base. Enjoyable and simple and straightfoward. Good introductory beer to brett flavors as one can easily compare this beer to its base, and the brett flavors are still overt enough to enjoy as is. Good but nothing great or breathtaking.
