Appearance 2.0: Poured out with very little head. Not unusual for a growler pour, but worth noting. OK, right off the bat I'm upset at this beer. This is a "black ale" and the beer is dark, amber brown. Dark brown! Why not drop some more black malt in the brew and make the beer BLACK??? Sorry, I just don't understand this. This is embarrassing.
Smell 3.50: Very good nose to this beer. Deep, malt bouquet with slight hop alkaline notes. After the appearance thing, this is promising.
Taste 4.25: Front is very hoppy, an even alkaline hop. Middle is big, with a huge malt punch. Not necessarily sweet, just a lot of malt flavor all at once. Also, there's a big kick to the sides of the palate from a hop overload: I taste primarily pine and deep bitterness...chinook? Nice. Finish is also heavy on the hops and a surprising (and delicious) chocolate hint with some slight smokiness. See? My black malt suggestion would certainly fit the flavor for which this beer was shooting. Aftertaste is long and features a slight burning in the mouth. Focus here is on hops and malt, too.
Mouthfeel 4.0: Really spot on for this beer's flavor. Good heft in the mouth and almost perfect level of carbonation.
Overall 3.75: Excellent tasting beer, but there are some problems here and there with this beer's overall presentation. However, regardless of some cosmetic issues (*ahem!*), this is a fine brew. Actually, it reminds me very much of Northern Brewer's "Black IPA" homebrew recipe that I brewed once. Big, malty middle and lots of excellent hop blending. Makes me wonder who influenced who. Long story short, I recommend this beer on its taste alone.

A: Dark brown, almost black with a creamy mocha head.
S: Pine, floral notes, kiwi and citrus in the nose.
T: Kiwi, grapefruit peel, citrus peel, citrus, lemon and grass, followed by roasted malt, espresso and coffee. Pretty much what you want out of the style, but perhaps not the best fruit flavor profile.
M: Full bodied and creamy smooth.
O: I'd prefer tangerine, mango, fresh orange, pineapple, papaya, passionfruit, tropical fruit, etc. mixed with the roasty flavors, but this is still a great beer. I'd definitely recommend it, if you like the black ale style.
