Tried after purchasing upon release. Wasn't all that crazy about it and thought some age may help. 12 ounce bottle, stemmed glass. "Best by 11/2010" stamped.
A - Nice dark reddish brown with a tan head, head keeps a nice cap and laces the glass well.
S - Getting aromas of dark crystal malts. Some caramel on the nose.
T - Nice taste here. Initial hit of caramel has a tiny touch of smokiness. The hopiness creeps up along with a tiny touch of alcohol heat which fades to a smooth finish with the hoppiness present into the aftertastw.. This brew has become essentially a nice barleywine after aging for some times.
M - A nice feel here. A touch light for all the flavors going on but still allows all the flavors to present themselves.
D - Impressive and interesting to say the least. Showcases hops as advertised, but doesn't do so in the brash "in-your-face" way a feature hop IPA or DIPA would. Really melds the nice sweet caramel malt with the Yakima valley hops.
A nice brew. I'm never in the "must be aged" camp but laying this one down for a little while really rounds this beer out in my opinion. In fact I think the 11/2010 may be too conservative an estimate for a best by date.
