Poured from 12 oz bottle into an Ommegang 10 year anniversary tulip. Enjoy by ? 2011 (print is faded).
Appearance: This is a bit of a surprise. I expected something blacker than night. Instead, a dark amber at most. A nice thick, soapy head.
Smell: Pleasant. Hint of cinnamon. Smells like my idea of a winter beer.
Taste: Another surprise. I was expecting a much hoppier beer. This is much more balanced and/or maltier than I expected. Tastes of caramel and cinnamon.
Mouthfeel: This beer is smooth, no doubt about it. Only a slight alcohol bite, which took me a while to even notice.
Drinkability: This goes down pretty smooth for a fairly high ABV beer.
Overall: I was expecting something totally different for my first American Black Ale/Black IPA/Cascadian Dark. Instead of black and hoppy, I got amber and smooth - but in the end, I really liked this beer.
