12oz bottle - obtained at the great Sam's Quik Shop in Durham - into a Harpoon IPA imperial pint glass. Served with just a slight chill on it.
A - Fantastic reddish-chestnut, very clear (filtered). A slightly rough pour yields a foamy, rocky head that nearly overwhelms the glass and which takes quite a while to settle down. We're off to a good start here....
S - Mostly malt, chocolate and roasted, off the nose, not too much hops though.
T - So the malty nose carries through to the taste; get a boatload of fairly sweet chocolate malt off the sip, with some roastiness as well. Hop flavor is not too pronounced, and get some alcohol heat at the very end of the palate. The hops are definitely there, but they are buried in all the malt, and really only serve to balance the malts, but don't really offer too much *flavor* per se. Does have a dry-ish finish, during which the roastiness comes through, but again, without much hop flavor to that finish. Finish turns just a bit medicinal as well.
M - Heavy and slick and alcohol really asserts itself. The carbonation lends a very smooth mouthfeel to the proceedings.
Interesting that this is characterized as a black ale; not sure what I'd call it, but am not sure black ale is it. In any case, this is a pretty decent beer; I'd get it again, but I prefer the hops to be a bit more assertive in a beer like this. All in all a decent, fairly complex brew.
