12oz bottle, Duvel tulip, best by 11/5/12. Thank you to Jayli via Secret Santa 2011.
Purple red like an heirloom tomato quickly denies the light near the center. A poofy dark khaki head does well in sticking to the glass, creating a screen on a third of it, well done.
I smelled pine initially, but this turns to what I can nicely describe as earthy. For the first time I seem to experience what some must describe as "cat pee" or "onions"; this mimics spiced sausage or earthy mushrooms. From the bottle conditioning yeast there is the aroma of the Chico strain yeast, neutral unless poured, it hangs like a cloud when it is. And oh yes, grapefruit and milk chocolate.
Piney, earthy bitterness with a bit of grapefruit. Dark toast, toast with melted cinnamon sugar, and cocoa show the slight differences between this and an IPA. That Chico yeast is still evident and hard to describe.
On medium carbonation is a slick medium body.
For me this is just one of those very nice beers where everything seems to work. This may be the best crafted Black IPA or whatever I've run across.
