A great beer when I had it upon the initial release, Yakima Twilight has become somewhat of an enigma to me lately. Maybe I haven't been in the mood for the style, but none of my pints lately have really reach out and grabbed me. But tonight it deserves my full attention, and this bottle (my first) will serve nicely.
APPEARANCE: Pours into a Sam Adams glass a deep, ruddy brown with a huge, light beige head on top. It's tight bubbles hold very well and never really drop at all.
SMELL: Some resinous, citrusy hops. Some charred chocolate. But not a whole lot else. Surprisingly mild.
TASTE: A caramel, bready base forms a nice, sweet base for this beer. The hops take quite a while to come around, but by the finish they've fully announced themselves. Not overly bitter, the flavor really stands out as pure west coast. Balanced if nothing else, this is a killer combination of sticky hops and sweet malt.
MOUTHFEEL: Maybe a touch to the lighter side of medium bodied. The carbonation is lower but still reasonable. There's a real silky texture to this that can mute out any harshness in the taste.
DRINKABILITY: Not bad. The aggressive hop flavor isn't the smoothest thing in the world, but there's a decent chance that that's your thing anyway. The alcohol is extremely well hidden, and I had to double check and make sure that 8.9% is right.
A fine ale that's nice to have locally available. This experience with the bottled version definitely exceeded by previous tap samplings. But I'm not ready to go all up in arms about this one - not by any stretch. It's a solid local brew and nice to have around.
