A- Deep garnet color with a one inch head (off white) that fades quickly and leaves very little lacing.

S- Aromas of roasted grains, grapefruit, tiniest hint of chocolate, faint smokiness, pine resin, and as the beer warms, light tropical fruit and alcohol. A pretty balanced aroma. No one aspect dominates the aroma. Very nice.

T- Roasted malts upfront followed by a earthy/spicy hop bitterness that carries through to the finish. A little alcohol warming is present as well.

M- Medium feel with moderate carbonation. Feels slick on the tongue.

D/O- All in all a good Black IPA. Personally, I've got a sneaking suspicion that Black IPAs just might not be my cup of tea. Victory is one of my favorite breweries, but I'll more than likely reach for one of their other beers before this one. Worth a try. Cheers.

12 oz bottle, best by 11/16/2010, into a Duvel tulip.

A: Clear, well-carbonated, prune-red body underneath a rich three-finger head of dense, long-lasting foam. Admirably retention and a solid deposit of ringed lacing. Excellent.

S: Deep, piney, grassy hop aroma balanced with smooth, sweet amber malts and a touch of appealing cinnamon spice. Quite appealing.

T: Follows the nose, but with slightly less flavorful hops, more spice, and a dry, bitter, doughy finish. Interesting to be sure, but not terribly appealing to me.

M: Nice clean medium body with abundant soft carbonation.

D: Too bitter and spicy to be super drinkable, despite the fact that it does an excellent job hiding the high ABV.

Notes: Definitely one of my preferred offerings from Victory (which just happens to be a brewery that I consistently like less than the average BA), but not my favorite of the style. Nice malt/hops balance, but a little out of whack with the dry spiciness. Certainly worth a shot.

On tap at Doherty's in Pawtucket RI
A - Deep brown with a reddish tint. Big tan head that lasts. Tons of lacing.
S - Malty/hoppy mix-up. Piney, resin, Little cat urine smell
T - Bitter up front, sweet malt follows. I get some licorice as well. Pine. Tart fruit. Lingering bitter aftertaste.
M/F -Active carbonation but fairly fine in structure. Quite nice that way. Medium body...rather filling like.
D - Looks wonderful and feels wonderful in the mouth but the raw bitterness doesn't match the elegance in it's framework.

Transparent garnet in color with a two finger head of tight fluffy suds that leave tons of lace all over the glass.

Complex scents of sweet bread, bright citric hops, prune and dark berries.

Lots of unsweetened bitter hops. Dark malts, notes of coffee and plenty of grapefruit peel. Some warm alcohol is present. I guess this fits as a hopped up strong ale. I think some age will smooth out the flavor and mellow the extreme bitterness of the hops.

Smooth, slightly creamy carbonation, close to full bodied, pretty bitter on the tongue. Extremely dry on the finish.

Pretty strong in alcohol and especially in the hop department. I'm a hop head, but one of these is enough. I think some age on this will be very positive. Unique beer that's worth a try.
