Poured directly from the source..at the Victory Brewpub
A nice dark brownish hue, with a good 1" off white/tan head.

Smell is piny hops, a lot like Hop Devil.

Tastes a lot like Hop Devil. The same dry bitterness as devil and wallop, but has a roastier malt profile.

Very dry from the hops, but it's very tasty.

It's very drinkable, but the abv will come back to bite you.

Overall, a very good black IPA.

Pours a dark brown with a slight reddish tint to it when held to the light. Generates about two inches of beige head, which settles to a thin but pretty full lace. On the way down it coats the glass beautifully, however, with lots of sticky webbing.

Smell has a nice citrusy, floral hop aroma up front, and layered behind it is roasted and other dark malts. There is some cocoa here and bready dark caramel. Citrusy and earthy hops are everpresent and very nice.

Taste starts off more on the malty side, the reverse of the nose. Has a light roasty quality and some dark caramel and a touch of coffee. I get some cocoa too, more bitter than sweet. Hops lean more to the earthy category, resiny as well, with some pithy citrus and rind. It does not quite have the juicy citrusy qualities that the nose did; if it did it would be absolutely top notch. It is still very tasty and has a good dose of resiny hop bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-full, pretty smooth and quite dry in the finish. Good carbonation.

I first tried this last year when it was Yakima Twilight, and I think at that point I'd only had 1 other Black Ale (Stone 11 I believe). It was remarkably good then, and after having many more black ales over the intervening year, I still think it is one of the best. A very good, highly drinkable beer, and a perfect non-spiced winter seasonal.
