bottle to mug
Enjoy by 12/17/10- A few days late but worth a shot.

App- A very dark amber/brown that lightens from top to bottom. A nice 1 1/2 finger head that was pretty flat and didn't retain very long.

Smell- Smells of citrus, nuttiness and had a touch of spice and some medium hops.

Taste- This has a lot of spicy hops behind the flavor but it also has tastes of some earthy herbs. Also had that nice bitter taste on the backend.

Mouth- It's a medium bodied beer with a pretty high carbonation for the style. Was a little creamy during the drink while it warmed.

Drink- I like what Victory does. Solid beers and not too over hyped. Will have to recommend this to some friends.

A rough pour reveals a brew of the deepest copper holding a three finger head of mocha colored bubbles. The head appears batter-thick and recedes at a slow pace, leaving big patterned lacing as it goes. There is near full transparency, if not for the darker coloring, and no sediment is noted. Carbonation looks to be average. The nose gives us roasty caramel malts that come through in a big way. There is a crystalline sweetness of cooked molasses and burnt toffee. There is a slight bittering of fresh hop oils, but they are significantly less prominent than expected. As the beer warms there is a sting of booze high to the back of the nose, and a metallic, salty bite. As we sip, the front seems to showcase all of the style’s necessities. We have deep roasty malts, deep to the point of nearing coffee darkness. There are also bright bittering hops, and a cooked brown sugar sweetness. It is nicely balanced. Through the middle we wash with a second round of those malts, and the beginning of what become heavy fusel alcohols in the end. The finish is otherwise clean, with metallic malts, fresh soapy hops, and cooked sweetness of sugars and spice. The aftertaste breathes with roasty and coiny grain, hops oils, and a bittering mix of the two. The body is medium to heavy and the carbonation is medium. The mouth is left generously coated with a sticky sweetness, but after time becomes dried along the length of the tongue by the dark roastiness. There is a nice froth and cream to each sip, likely lent by the beer’s thickness. The abv is getting up there, but the beer drinks with the ease of any strong ale.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was how well the roastiness and the flavoring hops blended together. For some reason we were expecting this one to be overwhelmingly hoppy, which could have possibly clashed with the otherwise darker aspects of the brew. When evaluating these “mixed” styles it can be easy to have one component outweigh another, but this brew sees a nice balance through to the end, with some admittedly robust flavorings.

A- Dark brown, when held to light looks oak colored. Some nice sized head, died out.

S- Toasty fresh hops, some dark coffee from the malts. I even get light spice notes, I think cinnamon.

T- Comes in smooth then you get a slight harsh bite from the hops, some burnt chalky caramel, again some spice and booze at the finish.

M- Would like it a bit more creamy with all the malt in here.

D- Alcohol is totally masked, very drinkable and tasty can be paired with spicy dishes.

Wow, If Yakima Twilight is Victory's answer to Stone's Arrogant Bastard, then I think they have succeeded.

Expecting a big IPA, I am surprised to find a very dark beer- dark amber to medium brown in color. A froathy tan head settles to a lacing blanket that evenly coats the beer 'til the very end. A solid, sturdy, and masculine look.

There's the IPA character- found right there in the nose. Strong hops of cascade, chinook, nugget, or other high alpha acid varieties. All backed up by deeply kilned malts that give big elements of toast, bread crust, and heavily caramelized sugars.

Flavors are big, bready, bold, and richly malty. Taking on Dopplebock proportions of malt flavor, melanoidin richness, and toasted breads. But then the hops show equal aggression before completely over-taking the beer. Pine resins, fresh cut grass, bitey-bitter, and citrus rinds give a good slap in the face before the beer fades into a malty-dry finish that prefers alcohol and breadiness to sugars and graininess.

Full and rich up front but the beer quivers a bit in the fullness just enough to allow the onslaught of hops to dominate from mid-palate on. Pine and mint finish the beer and return in the after taste.

A fantastic beer that rides the line between stronger American ales and Imperial IPA's. Thanks Stiggs!
