Beer pours a nice dark brown, ruby color. Much lighter than I was expecting for a "black" ale. Not much head.

Beer smells piney and citrusy.

Beer tastes very piney on the initial sip, before giving way to a nice, nutty taste. Also, slightly smokey as well.

Beer is a bit more carbonated than I would have liked.

Overall solid black ale.

12 oz bottle into a grand Bordeaux wine glass.
Enjoy By Date: 10/26/12
Puschased from Whole Foods Portland ME

A: brown with amber red hues. 3 fingers of frothy sand-colored head the recedes slowly and leaves great lacing.

S: bright piney hops up front with a solid backbone of malty brown sugar and caramel notes. Cut grass, saginess, roasted malt, a hint of filbert. Complex smell, though a bit sweet.

T: a lot less sweet malt then I would have guessed from the nose. Nice hop piney bitterness, earthy, floral, with a hint of malty caramel, very well balanced. Very good.

M: nice and smooth, no alcohol heat, good carbonation.

O: wow very good ale. The taste wins out on this one. Nose has a lot going on but seems a bit sweet and malty, but wow the taste is very subtle in all regards and finely balanced. Certainly a brew that is approachable and one I could drink a lot of. Recommend.

Sampled from a bottle - best by November 2012. Dark brown in color with deep ruby red hues and good clarity despite the dark color. Poured with a dense, rocky beige foam with good staying power that also left sheets of thick sticky lacings on the glass. Complex combination of dark roasted malt, coffee and chocolate malt aromas along with citrus, floral and and pine hops that intensify as this warms. Rich, smooth feel with aggressive carbonation. Dark roasted and lightly burnt malt flavors up front, floral and citrus hop bitterness from the middle thru to the end. A hint of dark chocolate flavor toward the end as the dark and burnt roasted malt flavor intensify at the finish in combination with a delayed bitter pine hop aftertaste. A multitude of aromas and flavors make this a beer to be sought out.

Balanced. Bitter all the way through. when the roasted bitterness meets the hops on the back end it could be a bit much. The bartender did state they are marketing this as a black IPA medium bodied, nice lacing light carbonation very easy to drink but not sessionable. Licorice.
Off tap served in a tulip.

A - Pours a deep ruby/brown with a two finger thick, creamy, off white head.

S - Pine, citrus, chocolate, caramel, toffee.

T - The smell correlates well with the taste. Piney, resinous, fresh herb, rosemary, chocolate, licorice, caramel, toffee.

M - Nice carbonation. Slightly buttery/creamy. Medium bodied.

O - Balanced. Bitter all the way through. When the roasted bitterness meets the hops on the back end it could be a bit much for some people. The bartender did state they are marketing this as a black IPA. Very easy to drink but not sessionable.

12 oz. bottle poured into standard pint. Best by date: Nov 12, 2012

A - Very dark amber brown. Nice two finger head which leaves a beautiful speckled lacing all the way down the glass. Somewhat transparent for a beer this dark.

S - Pine, citrus, maple syrup, toasty malts, rich hops. Interesting combo of smells.

T - Tastes like it smells. The combination of the pine and hops works perfectly with the nutty malt backbone. Nice and hoppy, but incredibly balanced. Very drinkable at 8.7%, the alcohol isn't noticeable at all. Delicious.

M - Good carbonation, not very heavy bodied but has a creaminess I didn't expect.

O - This has come to be one of my favorite beers, from one of my favorite breweries. There is a very unique taste that I have trouble describing. The flavors culminate to create a very distinct, balanced, and delicious beer. I don't know if it completely fits the style based on color and flavor, but I can't come up with a style that better suits it. I have a hard time ever passing this beer up and I will soon miss it greatly until it returns next November.

Poured from a bottle with a use by of Nov. 30, 2012.

Appearance: Mahogany in glass, basically clear. Thick 3-finger foamy light brown head. Plenty of lacing in glass, minimal carbonation/bubbling.

Smell: Definite fruity hops, but with another rather strange smell within, malty, yeasty.

Taste: OK, I know this sounds strange, but here goes: A (very) quick taste of fruity hops which is immediately overwhelmed by malts and...well...the taste of liquid fiberglass (!!!) The bitterness very quickly builds up on your tongue. I am drinking this on a fresh palate. The alcohol is fairly well hidden and not dominant, like you'd think in an almost 9%ABV beer. I just burped...Empty stomach, but the flavor of this beer-burp was like redoing a surfboard!! I have never experienced a flavor like this in a craft...

Overall: If you like extremely bitter hop-beers, then you'll like this one. The bitterness factor is growing at an exceptional pace as I continue drinking this.
As I prefer crafts with a mother-lode of fruitiness (Like Pliny and Alesmith-X), I'll pass on this one.

Brown bottle with a best-by date of October 26th 2012, poured into a standard pint glass. About a half inch of tan foam that lasted a couple minutes. Thin lacing remained, nothing crazy. The beer is a deep ruby/mahogany color that lets in only a slight bit of light on the edges.

Right from the start you smell the hops. Citrusy, with hints of grapefruit and alcohol. The taste follows suit, with a piney hit of hops up front that mellows out to a more grapefruit bitterness at the end, and it lingers in your mouth long after the sip. The malt aspect is barely noticeable but what little there is tastes of smoky bread. It is enough to make it slightly sweet and not kill your tastebuds with bitterness. Regardless, the hops are the main attraction here. The alcohol is hidden fairly well but you will still know you're drinking an 8% beer.

This one definitely warms the mouth. Not too much carbonation. Overall an interesting beer, I haven't had too many high hopped ales this dark before. I definitely will be picking this one up again come next winter.
