Pours black with a thick and creamy off white head that has excellent retention and lacing. The nose has lots of pine and citrus notes from the hops. And the grain bill offers burned caramel and milk chocolate, there's toffee and roasty notes too. The taste is much like the aroma with pine trees and caramel and chocolate. There's a huge resiny bitterness that lingers long into the finish. Silky and creamy body with a noticable hot alcohol that could be hidden a lot more.overall, this beer is pretty decent. Not really impressed though.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Dark red-brown color. Great clarity. Towering rocky tan head never dips below two inches. Lacing leaved sheets of thick foam on the glass.

S: Soot and charcoal. Faint steely scent. Bread crust and heavily toasted grain. Hops bring fresh mint, tangerine, freshly cut grass, and orange peel. Tropical esters in the background.

T: Floral hops all over the attack. Tangerine and both lemon and orange peel. Mint jelly. Malts make just as much noise with a deep crusty impression. Heavy toast. Toasted grain. Hints of soot and char. Slightly steely. Alcohol peeks out more as it warms. Lots of soot and bitter dark chocolate on the finish in tandem with minty, oily hops.

M: Medium bodied. Creamy and a little airy in texture. Modest astringency from both hops and roasted malts.

O: Great interplay from both malt and hops, and a modest complexity offered by both. This beer boasts a very unique flavor profile. I also would never have guessed that this fella clocked in at 8.7% abv. A solid American Black Ale.
