1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a N'ice Chouffe stemgoblet in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are moderate.

A: Pours a one finger head of slight cream, decent thickness, and fair retention. Colour is a transparent orange-gold. Looks appealing.

Sm: Very yeasty - which I like. Also some bacteria, souring hop quality, and some citrus tones. I'm looking forward to trying this. Aroma is moderate in strength.

T: Nicely citrusy, with some wonderfully handled yeast notes. Some nice hoppy notes are in there too, but are rather subtle and nicely balanced - as is the beer as a whole. A lovely build. Some touches of candied sugar and a bit of cream set the whole thing off with a tingly effect. Quite a nice little beer indeed.

Mf: Tingly, smooth, and wet. A bit too thick but it's forgivable; it probably needs that to cover up the ABV.

Dr: It's very drinkable for the style and ABV. I'd like to try this on draught. This makes me excited to try more beers from Victory in the future.

Bottle: Poured a hazy golden color ale with a nice thick foamy head with pretty good retention and some lacing. Aroma of rustic ester and sweet malt is quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated by notes of rustic and floral malt with some sweet notes which may be a tad too sweet for the style. Body is quite full with good bottle conditioning and good carbonation. Well brewed with nice level of complexity but unfortunately it is a bit too sweet and lack some attenuation.

Straight pour from 22oz bomber to Belgian Independence Day stemmed tulip. Freshness date of April 6, 2012 (“ENJOY BY: APRIL 06 2012 B BT 3”) printed on the label.

Appearance (4.0): A very fine, frothy white head that rises above the rim of the glass like a soufflé just a little bit, with a smooth, rolling, pillow surface. Sits at least two full fingers above the slightly hazy, pale golden body, accented by intermittent streams of tiny bubbles floating to the top. Just a little bit of lace. Very pretty beer, even if I like my saisons wild, turbid, and lacy.

Smell (4.0): There’s that characteristic animal-like, wet hay sort of smell, but it’s light and refreshing. I love that range of saison scents, and this certainly has it. Malt profile is understated in the nose, but there’s a decent helping of spiciness and a very low-key grassy note here, doubtless a mix of yeast and hops—so lively.

Taste (4.0): A pronounced mixture of moderate tartness and peppery notes dominate the palate, supported by a light, bready and biscuity malt base—a simple sort of saison, but it works. Finish is long and quite herbal, it’s very refreshing and ultimately light on the palate. Great light yeast note, with a slightly chalky, drying character in the finish. Meanwhile, throughout all this there’s a funky, mildly tart thing going on that I’d wager is partly from some wheat malts and partly from some light brett—a very nice, lemony character.

Mouthfeel (4.5): Light and lively, but with a full, coating, pervasive carbonation that strikes a nice balance between prickly and velvety. Lighter side of medium-bodied, with an extremely dry finish that just begs for more.

Overall (4.0): This is a very, very solid saison. It may be relatively run of the mill in some ways, but it nails the style in the process. This would be an excellent introduction to saisons to anyone interested in trying the style. Thanks Victory, for making such an accessible one!

22oz bottle $3.99. I bought this because it was cheap and I heard it had brettanomyces, I was thoroughly surprised at how much I liked it. I poured this into a wine glass and it had a bright yellow-orange color and a great head, looks nice. The smell was heavy brett, funk, hay, farm, and a dash of lemons. I sniffed it for quite awhile before taking the first sip, great aroma. The flavor was pretty good as well, heavy brett yeast flavor and a distinct citrus flavor. This reminded me of Boulevard Saison Brett but at a third of the price. I'll be buying a bunch more.

Received a 1 PINT 6 FL. OZ. bottle of this from ipaking67 in a trade & has an estimated price of $15. Poured from the Brown, Green, Yellow, and Orange Squared Label w/ a Sun that is stuck in a Tulip Glass into my 12oz Schlafly Gold Rimmed Tulip Glass. Has ENJOY BY: AUG 5 2012 on the front in almost microscopic font.

Story Behind this Brew: While the Saison style has been my favorite this year, I've been trying to knock out all of the ones in the top 50. I've only had the Hop Devil from Victory and this was awesome so very sure that the Helios (with its rating and all) will be very nice!

Aroma- Has a HUGE tart and strong citrus aroma upfront. Very limited amount of spice but the acidic aroma is perfect and awesome! Almost seems like a lambic or light gueuze aroma is involved.

Appearance- Pours a 3 finger head that lasts for a great amount of time. Has a great golden body with a bit of haze. Leaves thick lacing behind and is random all along the glass.

Flavor- Awesome combo of fruit and light spice. There is a ton of acidity and light pepper flavor in the finish. Light bitterness but more importantly is very effervescent and hits the tongue strongly!

Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, High Carbonation, Creamy, Smooth, and leaves nice citrus on the palate. Very effervescent all the way through. Does have a strange sour grapefruit on the palate that I'm not too keen about... Limits the rating of this category...

Overall Impression- A bit too sour for the sour. At the finish has a old/stale grapefruit taste that is hard to enjoy or get through. I finished the entire bottle but this really made me think, huh, this one started GREAT and then finished average. I would still recommend anyone trying this one but there are many other Saisons before this one I would enjoy.
