On-tap at the hulmeville inn. Deep mahogany in color almost opague but not quite. One finger light brown colored heading. Left some lace strings at first but does turn flat as it warms.

Nose... you guessed it, smoked malt with a nice burnt wood aroma. Nice roasty malt aroma with a slight touch of charcoal. Just makes me think of the holidays.

Taste is very low key in the smoke department, there is however a heavier mocha mix that I wouldn't have expected. Nice roastiness.

Mouth is medium-full bodied, decent carbonation. A little more on the thicker side.

Overall not a bad smoke beer. Nothing earth shattering but not bad.

I had this smoked beer at Piper's Pub a couple weeks ago, while visiting the Southside. Nearly opaque dark as night with hints of ruby highlights at the edges, dark tan head forms thick. Aroma has a nice robust layer of smoke, mild smoked meats, with some campfire roasted malts...other tones that arose were a mellow fruitiness with soft grain character of the oatmeal. Flavor actually lead with the tartness of the some vinous dark fruit character with a smoked malt character finishing it off with a pretty heavy hand. Smoked meat was mellow nowhere near as in your face as some of the Bambergian brethren, herbal hops with a nice dark roasted malt character finishes it out to complement the smoked malts. Medium bodied with a soft fuller texture with the oatmeal addition, thick enough for the winter but not overbearing enough to deter me in the early sunny days of Spring. Even carbonation made for effortless drinkability, I didn't detect any heat from this beer, but was expecting something closer to a smoked Baltic Porter in alcohol. Overall, nothing compares to the quality beers from Victory I've been trying on a consistent basis, they understand what great beer is all about. Three styles on side by side this was my least favorite of the three and it was still excellent.

Served in a 10 oz. chalice glass

Appearance – Served a very deep brown nearly completely black color with a very light tan/light brown head. The head faded fast giving a light bit of lacing.

Smell – The smell is mainly of smokiness and roasted chocolate malt with a subtle coffee aroma. This is combined with a light mount of vanilla, which gives a nice overall aroma

Taste – The taste is on the more bitter-smokey chocolate and a nice oatmeal backbone initially. It sweetens a bit, more toward the middle, with bits of caramel and vanilla working into the oaty base. As it advances further however, it becomes more bitter and the sweetness is lost to a deeper cocoa and espresso flavor which lingers in the mouth with a rather pleasant aftertaste.

Mouthfeel – A rather light to moderate body with an average level of carbonation. The body, actually, takes away from the brew a bit, as it is quite light and could use less carbonation to create a overall creamier feel.

Overall – While it lacks some things in body and mouthfeel it is a nice more bitter porter with good aroma and taste. Worth a try.

First off, you must like smoked beers to have any chance of liking this beer from Victory. Pours a dark brown/black color with traces of head from the keg.

Smell is immediately there... charcoal and meat on the nose mixed with malt.

Taste is thin, cold (like a winter evening) with smoke from a wood-burning grill.

Overall, takes some getting used to and I (admittedly) am not a huge smoked beer fan.

On tap @ the Victory Brewing Company (Downingtown, PA) on 1/29/12. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a deep brown/near black, with a lot of ruby highlights coming out along the bottom, and topped with a ½ finger of light mocha head. This maintains some rich frothy edges, leaving back a robust cascade of lacing that sticks to the sides. The aroma smells sweet with oatmeal, cocoa, and some light caramel, with green citric hops mixing in to add a deep flavorful tang to the nose. Roasted coffee comes out along the back, while a subtle smokiness envelopes this, hanging in the background and complimenting the other flavors.

The taste is a smooth and sweet mix of oatmeal, some light chocolate, and a touch of tangier caramel flavors that segues into a green earthy bitterness. Dark roast hangs on the edges, pulling into the finish with that same smoky character. Like the nose, the smoke is more on the subtle side, thanks to the strength of the other flavors, but does pick up some steam as this warms. The overall flavor profile seems to mainly focus on the sweetness and hops though. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly sharp feeling on the tongue and mostly stays that way during the duration of the feel. Things get a little creamier towards the back but this is ultimately coming off as a little too sharp in spots.

I rather liked this, as it basically came off like a smoked Oatmeal Stout but it was still well balanced, with the smoke never overpowering any of the other flavors. This was maybe a little too lively feeling at times but the overall presentation here won me other. This is the type of unique offering that I expect to find here at the brewpub.

Had a couple of drafts at Victory last Sunday. Bought a growler of this because I thought it tasted pretty good.

A: Pours a dark amber. Clear with high tan head after vigorous pour. Nice carbonation.

S: Nice smoke malt aroma upfront with notes of bacon, ham, and smoke. A tad of roast in the background.

T: Tastes smokey but well balanced. Hints of roast & chocolate. A bit toasty and nutty.

M: Feels medium full with nice even bitterness. Drinks like a session beer as alcohol is hardly noticeable.

O: No real hop character here. Smoked malts take the lead. This is a really nice smoked porter and easy to drink. Great job Victory!

First had: on tap at Pinocchio's, Media, PA

Poured a clear, dark brown with a small layer of off-white head. Roasty malt aroma, rye spice, and charcoal. Taste of smoke and charcoal, but not too heavy as to detract from the other flavors at play: roasty malts, nuts, grains, subtle hop bitterness. Medium-bodied and pretty decent overall, but I've had better of the style.

This beer looks very nice. Dark dark brown with ruby highlights and sheets of just off white lacing. Aroma is pretty smokey. Kind of one note, but not unpleasantly so. Flavor is light and smokey with a nice biscuit malty flavor. Nice, but nothing special. Mouthfeel is too light even for something that is supposed to be low abv. Overall a nice enough beer. Quite enjoyable.
