64 oz swing-top growler into several glasses. Thanks go to sholland119 for generously sharing this with a group of us. By the way, the literature from the brewery indicates that this is actually their take on a Steam Lager but it seems to be more of a mashup of the CA Common and Pale Ale styles.
Pours a clear gold, with a finger of foamy bright-white head. This retains with a thin soapy retention that maintains some frothy edges and leaving back a rich cascade of lacing which quickly slides down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells flowery, spicy, and citric, with a thick underlying bready sweetness to it. The hops have a nice bright boldness in the nose but aren't too overly aggressive.
The taste is bitter with earthy citrus character that is balanced out by a very sweet backbone of Pale malt and ripe fruit flavors. The hops in turn do a little balancing of their own however, returning in the finish with notes of spice and rind that linger with some strength. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm sharpness that expands out into the mouth, keeping this lively feeling and really bringing those hops out. Nearly 7% seems a bit high for the style but the alcohol was still handled well here, with none being detected beyond some fullness in the body.
Pretty decent take on a Steam Beer/Pale Ale hybrid here if you ask me, with equal parts bold hops and an even bolder mix of sweetness and fruit here, yet this still stayed crisp and pretty smooth overall. Interesting beer for sure.

Going to Victory for a business meeting netted me not only a free Dark Devil with lunch but a free growler and fill. So I grabbed this one time brew to share.
A-Pours a clear honey gold with a foamy white head and no lacing.
S-Sweet fruity esters, some banana and a bit of floral hoppiness.
T-Sweet banana yeast notes, biscuit malt and some floral hops. A bit underhopped and sweet for my liking.
M-Medium bodied, creamy and a bit slick.
O-Decent, an interesting take on a style that I did not know existed (German Steam Lager) but nothing special.

One of the 2011 Craft Brewing Conference beers. Pours gold, nose is quite light, touch of lightly sweet malt and a very subtle hop. Very smooth, balanced in the mouth, with a very lightly sweet malt and a very nice light lingering hop on the finish. Simple and refined, exactly what Victory excels at.
