Bottle: Poured a cloudy dark brown color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of residual sugars is quite dominant with some very subtle light smoky notes and some light oak/bourbon notes also noticeable. Taste is a nice mix between some light smoky notes with some bourbon notes and some heavy caramelized malt with quite a bit of residual sugars. Body is full with good carbonation and alcohol is not very apparent. There is less smoke notes than I was hoping for and bit too much residual sugar s for my taste.

750ml corked and caged.
Pours a murky brown color with a slight head. There was relatively little sediment.
Aroma of bourbon, caramel and toast.
In the taste, more bourbon in this aged version then fresh, small meaty smoke but most of the rauchbier qualities have faded.
Caramel, oak, slightly dry and a bit of bubblegum like Belgian yeast, perhaps wheat is used as well. Tannins and earthy, aged and sweet but not too boozy.
Medium bodied, well carbonated, slightly dry.
Overall, this has aged fairly well, but the smokier component was much more pronounced when fresh, which held the beer together more. Quite good, nevertheless, and wonder what it would do it left a lot longer.

Good old stores with old bottles, Apr 26 2012 date.

A- Poured into a chalice with a dark brown body, some red hues around the edges. Small off white head forms with decent retention and falls to a creamy ring. Just a bit of lace on the glass.

S- Strong and interesting. Bourbon off the top but it is pretty mellow and rounded out with a great vanilla feel, solid oak too. Smoky malts lend a BBQ meat feel as well as some Scotch hints. Brown sugar, molasses, raisin, some oxidation and caramel.

T- Again, the bourbon flavors here are extremely well rounded and balanced out. Delicious vanilla ice cream feel with the oak, maybe the best vanilla flavor I have experienced in a beer just from a barrel. Nice mellowed whiskey, raisin, smoked meats, camp fire, molasses, spice, dark fruits and caramel.

MF- Pretty dry and moderately thick body. Carbonation is nice and high with a somewhat watery feel. ABV well hidden and everything is so mellowed and balanced.

Awesome to be honest. The vanilla oak feel rules with the smoke and whiskey present. Not sure if better with age but this was a great dusty shelf find.

A - Deep ruby, murky, crimson highlights. Excellent color. Head has decent retention and lace.

S - Oaky, vanilla, bourbony. I'm not getting as much depth in the nose that I expected.

T - Opens more then the smell with more of that smokiness from the base beer mid palate. Dark dried fruits like plum and fig meld in there too, finishing with some vanilla sweetness. Mild hop bitterness, but really no hop taste.

M - Medium/full body, medium carbonation. Smooth, finishes dry and mostly clean.

O - Lots of flavors going on here, but doesn't really seem to meld all that well for the final verdict. Seems like much of the smokiness from the base beer was lost in the bourbon, which is a shame since that's what I enjoyed most about it. Enjoyable, but I'd pass on buying it again.
