750 ml bottle corked and caged. 2012 vintage. Pours an opaque light brown color with a peach tone. Off white head forms and leaves adequate lace.
Aroma of woody bourbon and vanilla. Precisely bourbon and sweet malts.
In the taste, loads of oaky tannins on sweet malts with notes of toffee, vanilla and butterscotch. Bourbon flavor is strong but not overbearing. Oaky flavor, caramel, vanilla and bourbon are the major players. Hops have died down to a ghost bitterness. Still a sweet bourbon soaked affair that fine beverage aficionados covet.
Medium bodied, with carbonation at a low medium. Slightly dry from the barrel aging.
Overall, this a great barrel aged barley wine, what more could you want for the style.

Bought this few months ago from City Swiggers in NYC, ~$18/750ml bottle. Poured from a 750ml bottle into my Cigar City snifter.

a - Pours a somewhat murky reddish brown color with two inches of off white head that leaves quickly and moderate carbonation evident. Spotty lacing throughout.

s - Smells of caramel malts, light sweet bourbons, sweet dark fruity malts, oak, toasted malts, toffee, light citrus, and bready malts. Nose is nice. Bourbon is there but not super strong, and there is a lot more fruit than I was expecting, but it is nice.

t - Tastes of caramel malts, bourbon, alcohol, oak, toasted malts, toffee, sweet dark fruits, bread, and burnt malts. More bourbon here than the nose and a lot of alcohol to it. You can definitely taste the double digit ABV. Step down from the nose due to the alcohol heat.

m - Medium to full body and high carbonation. Some alcohol heat. I like the body but it is a little bit over-carbonated.

o - Overall a good barleywine, but too much alcohol in the taste for me to call it a great one. I liked the nose a lot and the body, but it was too carbonated and the taste has a ton of alcohol and heat to it, making it tough to drink a bottle of this. Worth checking out, but would recommend splitting the bottle with something. Not something I'd pick up again because of the price tag too.

750ml cork and cage bottle poured into a large snifter.

A: Red-brown color, very hazy on the pour. Cream-colored head is a bit short-lived, though it was easily revived with some strong swirls of the glass. Lacing is spotty.

S: Brown bread, crust, pecan pie, dark caramel. Tight raspberry ester. Quick spike of alcohol. Earthy hops, hint of pine. Bourbon, vanilla, and oak wrap all of this in a comforting blanket.

T: Caramel, pecan pie, bready dessert, chocolate turtles, brown cocoa. A hefty dose of earthy and piney American hops balances the sweetness. Spike of alcohol. Booze soaked fig and raisin. Warm barrel presence brings lots of chewy caramel, vanilla, oak, and bourbon and wraps everything in a gentle, soothing embrace. Long finish of caramel, brown bread, crust, a touch of dry oak, and fading bourbon.

M: Thick in body. Decadent, chewy, and velvety smooth. Low carbonation. Warming alcohol. Excellent.

O: This is right up my alley. A large and formidable barleywine tempered by time in a barrel. So seamless and well-integrated. The barrel flavors complement the beer perfectly. Just a soothing, relaxing, and comforting beer to drink. Ever seen a cat nestled into the carpet directly in the path of a sunbeam, napping contentedly and oblivious to all around it? That's how I feel when I drink beers like this.

750 ml caged and corked bottle. Served in a Dogfish Head snifter, the beer pours a dark reddish/brown color with a half inch light tan head. Head retention is decent, not much lacing. Aroma is nice and malty, it smells like dark fruit, oak, vanilla, bourbon, brown sugar, and caramel. The taste is similar to the aroma, the brew tastes like dark fruit, oak, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, brown sugar, caramel, candied fruit, toffee, and some booze. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit coating and creamy with moderate carbonation. I thought this was a good brew, worth a try for sure!

Bottle from Food and Friends in Philly.
Pours a deep garnet brown with a smallish beige head that shows great retention. Aromas of brown sugar, vanilla, hints of wood and dried fruits. There is a solid alcohol presence and a faint bit of earthy hop aroma as well. The flavor is sweet with caramel and brown sugar that is dripping with vanilla drizzle. Light dried fruits with a solid alcohol bite and hints of earthen hop to balance. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. It's a little bit alcohol hot for my tastes but it really is a fantastic beer. If it weren't so damn expensive I would have snagged another bottle.
