2002 edition, 750ml corked and caged. Pours with a head about 1/8" deep that reduces quickly to a thin spread of whitish film. No real viscosity to the deep, pure copper-colored liquid. Smells okay--not too special--like slightly sour apple skins and a vaguely white-winey grapeyness. Cordial notes come through in the finish, like brandy and lemon. The nosefeel is thin, vinous, and cutting with alcohol's cold heat. At first the flavors strike me as being simple. Like, "hm... fruit." And then, just as I'm about to stop paying attention, "fruit" becomes "dried apples, mandarin oranges, raisins..." Fruit, and overflowing baskets of it. Every flavor, from black cherry to banana, is soaked in layers of alcohol and medicine, warming to become bitter like honeyed herbal tea. Fantastically dry mouthfeel, alcoholically thin and warm, evaporates into the tongue but leaves the tastes behind to be savored. Points go to the drinkability just for the sheer polish of it all. Drink with care. After the first half of the bottle I was feeling pretty good. After the second half, I wasn't feeling much of anything at all. Great stuff. It was worth the wait.

Pours a hazy orange amber with a 1/2 off-white head that settles to a thin film and ring on top and leaves spotty lace.

The smell is of prunes, dates and raisins up front with caramel and toffee and alcohol on the finish.

The taste is of bready malt, caramel sweetness, raisins, dark cherry and a hint of booze.

The texture is medium bodied with high carbonation. A steady stream of tiny bubbles rise up throughout the drink down.

Overall, this is a solid American interpretation of the classic Belgian style.

Poured from 750mL bottle ($20), at Forequarter, Madison, into a chalice. An anonymous-looking brown murk, with an off-white finger of head, w/ serious lacing stuck to the glass.

Smell is of must or funk, overlying a tannic red wine. A bit of Belgian tart yeast.

In the mouth it's a wonderful approximation of a Belgian beer. Cherries in alcohol. A warming liqueur sensation. On the front end it's very sweet and grainy, sugary, even. Malt sweetness, but also tropical fruit, like mango. Some hops on the back-end balances it all. Seriously complex.

Creamy and rich mouthfeel. Low on the carbonation in appearance, but so well-balanced, the syrupy consistency is most welcome. There's a surprising sharpness. Highly drinkable.

This is a definite go-to with rich food.

Bottle purchased at AJ's Beer Warehouse in Henrietta, NY.

Poured into my Abandon Brewing snifter. Pours a clear dark peach color. One inch head dissipates quickly. Very small amounts of lacing.

Smells like apricots, orange, cherries, and Belgian yeast.

Similar flavor. Lots of the typical candied Belgian yeast flavors, along with apricot, orange creamsicle, maraschino cherries, cloves, and a a slight herbal grassiness, most likely from the hops.

Medium mouthfeel, very low carbonation. As the beer warms, it becomes a bit more boozy.

The best American made quad I've had. Another great one from Victory.
