3/4 L bottle into trois pistoles chalice

A - a golden orange, copper, or amber colour for the body. the head is more or less an off white colour. the foam forms pretty well, but doesn't retain all that great. the colour is really pretty, but its too light and diaphanous for a quad. the body is diaphanous, but it is turbid enough to prevent one from seeing through it.

S - a rich sweet malty nose, with a bunch of fruits. there are bundles of apples and some dried apricot or nectarine flavours. the smell is really good, really potent and juicy. the malts keep up good pace with the fruits. the only problem i would note is that the nose is quite elusive, though potent when it does show up.

T - this is weird for a quad, in my opinion. the initial is a bit sweet, and has that normal quad savoriness. good malts and this sugar dominate the flavour until the hops and booze come, hand in hand, to ruin the party. the booze roars in my mouth, having this spicy dryness that couples with the natural spiciness of the hops to make a burning bitter dry taste. granted its not as bad as I make it sound, but it still is more than enough to completely steer off the flavour. the finish is very boozy, a dry burning that almost evens out with the innate sweetness of the malts and yeast. the aftertaste is a simple sweetness with a bit of savory yeast.

MF&D - the feel and drinkablity are quite good. the feel is a full medium, with good carbonation. the carbonation is full, but not particularly zesty or potent. nevertheless, the beer goes down easily and one really doensn't take as full a notice as one could of that 12% abv. surprisingly smooth except for the finish, or if the beer is held in mouth for a long time.

Poured from a 750 ml brown bottle into a Chimay goblet. Bottled on Sept 18 2009 on front label. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Lighter than expected chestnut with a big dose of floaties but a prodigious 1-2 finger light beige head with decent retention and peaks of lacing.

S: Major fruity aroma here with fig, plums, red grapes, currants, bananas, and orange marmalade all combining with some mild herbal hopping to create a huge malt blast. The entire aroma experience is accentuated by further fruity yeast esters with a mild, phenolic, clove character

T: THe flavor also assaults with malt, first with dark fruits like red and purple grapes, figs, cherries, plums, and raisins, all dosed with a heavy dose of rum-infused honey. Hops provide some balancing herbal-based bitterness. Yeast esters play a big role with banana and some lightly sulfuric apricot and peach character as well. Bitterness is low -- this is a malt wallop all the way, and a good one too. Vinous without getting too grapey -- a masterful beer all-around. The alcohol is tame and in the background.

M: Silky smooth with nowhere the 12% detectable anywhere. Sumptuous feel overall with moderate carbonation to keep it from feeling too thick and viscous.

O: This was indeed a good one to put away -- wow -- huge dark fruit character with drinkability. Sumptuous and decadent but not over the top -- wonderful. I wish I had bought more.
