Snagged a bottle of this for 10 bucks at the Allegheny six pack shop next to my house. May have overpaid by a couple of bucks but I am psyched to try it.

A - Somewhat hazy orange yellow color much darker than Golden Monkey with just a layer of sticky lace that forms a ring.
S - Papaya and Guava fruits next to some port wine and candied sugar malts. Smell is more wine than I expected so hopefully it's integrated nicely.
T - White wine and some boozy stinging flavors mixed next with your fruity yeasts and somewhat a chalky finish. Really surprised how much the white wine flavor dominated making this already boozy triple even boozier (if that's a word). After a while the flavors kind of mend but I could use more fruity yeast flavor.
M - Medium to heavy, ABV is noticeable, finish is very on the dry side.
Overall I wouldn't call it a waste but it's better than I expected. Man I must be retarded or something because I keep buying these beers and I straight up hate wine.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed yellow-amber color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a nice level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell –The aroma of the beer is a mix of the traditional golden monkey and some oaky white wine and vanilla (as may be expected). The heaviest aromas are of some light fruity smells with peach, pear, and apricot and a bit of orange along with a honey smell. The yeasty smells are the second most potent, but being contended in intensity by the oaky vanilla and white wine aromas which give a somewhat of a more boozy aroma to the brew overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a yeasty and fruity flavor with some honey flavors mixed within. The fruity flavors are those that were detected in the nose with just a hint of a yeasty white grape wine flavor upfront. The white wine flavor grows in intensity as the taste moves on however, with it being accompanied by some oaky and vanilla flavors. The wine, oak, vanilla, yeast, and wood really develop more toward the end, with other flavors of a lightly grassy and spiced taste of clove and coriander hitting the flavor profile. In the end, with all the transitions that have occurred, one is left with a rather dry and crisp, oaky mix of a wine and somewhat yeasty triple flavors to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather high and effervescent. Both are rather appropriate for the triple style as well as nice for the white wine flavors of the brew, making for a crisp and rather brisk and drinkable brew even at 9.5 % abv.

Overall – The white wine and oak add an interesting dimension to the brew, but really don’t make it that much better. It is no better than the original in my opinion and hence, since it costs about 1.8x as much as the golden monkey, it is not really a worthwhile brew. It was good for one try, but not really outpacing the golden monkey and worth it.

750ml corked and caged bottle pours a clear golden color until you get towards the bottom and rustle up the coagulated yeast chunks. A white sudsy topping fades quick leaving a few spots of lacing effect.

The smell of this brew is raw and earthen with oak and almost a cinnamon-like spiciness before the onset of yeast notes that impart clove and fruity esters reminescent of apple and pear. A sort of chardonnay aspect is present with warming vinous appeal.

The taste is herbal and dry like apple and pear fruitiness with light vinous touch before warming alcohol and earthen dry oak takes over. It is a bit harsh and raw with the barrel inclusion seemingly dominating the base tripel.

This is medium bodied with a light amount of carbonation. It is boozy with a huge barrel impact that dominates the base beer instead of complimenting it. I think the low level of carbonation hurt this brew a bit. Having a bit more life to the feel would have made it a bit easier on the palate and moved the flavors across the tongue better instead of having the long lasting tannic feel of the barrel reside sip after sip. Im glad I shared this with a few people, I would never want a bottle of this to myself.

A: Pours a pale amber with a small amount of white head. Just a ring around the edge of the glass retains, along with a touch of surface film, leaving mild lacing.

S: Mild yeasty sweetness with a touch of white wine fruit.

T: Also relatively mild, sweet grain and yeast with a white wine touch. It's pretty laid back overall, but balanced, and in a way refreshing. It's also pretty unique, in its own subtle way.

M: Medium to light body, medium carbonation.

Overall, pretty good. It's got good flavor and complexity without doing anything over the top. It's refreshing, though pretty strong; it feels a bit like a wine, in certain respects, and that's all that hints at its true ABV. Worth a try.

A- The appearance is fine, nice deep shade of golden goodness, very clear appears to be able to quench my thirst. No foam to speak of, I usually enjoy a bit of foamy head.

S- It has funny boozey smell that doesn't perplex me. The wine barrel is evident. It's a complex smell that I usually wouldn't enjoy but this intrigues me. The smell is playing games with me, and I don't know if I'm going to really enjoy this beer or not care so much.

T- Interesting. I feel I like it more than not, but it may be because of the label. It's crisp, refreshing, agree with previous reviews that it's definitely a patio sipper with a group of people.

M- The mouth feel is complex but funnels into one state, if that helps. It's not over the top and no one spice sticks out more than another, it flows well, like a deep conversation. A barley wine drinker would likely enjoy this for something different. It reminds me of a very laid back, subdued barley wine, refined, but not highbrow. Calming.

The label is really telling of the beer, very internalized, a beer that is at peace with it self, down to earth, definitely not going for an over the top flavor. Don't let the smell turn you off. It's a slow sipper, one I would try again. Not my every weekend beer, but I will surly revisit again around the time late summer and early fall meet.

Pours into a large tulip glass a slight hazed deep burnt orange with a blooming large white head that left broken chunks of lace as it settled slowly into a frothy mass.Oaky lactic notes hit the nose upfront along with some spiced phenols,as it sits more vanilla warm spice comes into play.Vanilla tinged oak and phenols at the onset of the palate with a mild lactic sourness, the vanilla oak barrel plays a big role and the phenols are more minor.I like this beer alot, alot more than many,I like the complexities of it,a great patio sipper.

Pours a straw color with a head that quickly falls, very little lacing.

Smells sweet oaky white wine and vinegar, some vanilla

Taste starts out kind of sweet, light and grapey, the barrel notes quickly take hold, vanilla, oak but the grape stays there throughout

Medium bodied, and well carbonated, keeps this beer from becoming syrupy or cloying.

Overall, a very interesting beer, probably more enjoyable for me than the Golden Monkey base beer.

Color- cloudy gold. Medium head.

Aroma- dry and grapey.

Taste- Starts with vanilla and barrel notes then turns to sawdust and stale shredded wheat finishing with a beautiful, rich wine barrel finish. A truly unusual brew. Much better than Golden Monkey.

Poured from a corked 750 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted June 2014.
