Pours a smaller fizzy 1/4 finger but thicker head that fades at a med pace with a bit of lacing, hazy honey wheat colored beer.
Nose is complex and strong, some golden malts to start, sweet candy malts, with some Belgian yeast esters and plenty of them, hint phenolic, light vinous notes, I think a bit of wheat even, with some candy sweet almost syrupy aromas, then all that turns to buttery oak barrel with a hint of wine, I think a fruity white wine.
Taste brings some sweet golden malts again right off, a candy sweetness and syrupy candy flavors, little toffee and nutty like but barely. Then fruity flavors, vinous notes, and some fruity white wine again, light Belgian esters, touch of phenols with that. Hops are abundant, spicy slightly earthy pine hops, little floral, and fairly bitter overall. Then again loads of buttery oak barrel, light white wine with it, and hint of vanilla, a little orange zest which pairs nicely with the barrel. Juicy malt character in the background as well, with some warming phenolic booze. Finish is quite bitter as the spicy hops ramp and dominate, bit of pine as well, as well as more white wine, a bit of buttery oak, sticky syrupy despite the drying, and light citrus lingering.
Mouth is med to a bit heavier bodied, little syrupy, some warming booze, decent carb.
Overall not bad, a nice Belgian beer underneath, with nice buttery barrel, the wine even seems to show through a bit, decent phenols and esters which hit the spot when i'm looking for them. However, the hops get a little too much from the initial Golden Monkey, as I hoped they would have died off a bit but they almost seem to have increased as they are more noticeable. Still a decent beer to drink, but hard to finish off the bottle by myself. Good thing its a Friday night and the kids are asleep.

A - A slightly vigorous pour yields nothing more than a thin layer of partially splotch lacing and a thing collar... A bunch of medium and large sized carbonation bubbles cling to the sides of the glass... A small cyclone of micro-sized carbonation swirls deep in the center of the glass... The color is a pale golden straw color... A fairly pedestrian appearance overall...
S - A very pleasant aroma... Their are light oak notes from the wine barrel... Some light white grape must scents... These notes are at the forefront... A bit further beneath the surface is a light Belgian yeast presence... Golden raisins... Faint candied sugars... Some unexpected sweet fruity esters as well, namely peaches and tangerines... Lots of depth and each whiff reveals a new facets...
T - Not quite sure if its the tannins, the oak, or some other off flavor, but the overpowering flavor profile is actually quite unpleasant... Lots of slightly off white wine character... None of the traditional Golden Monkey goodness can be detected... There is also an odd wild yeast component which seems sorely out of place...
M - Light-to-medium bodied... Starts slightly dry before intensifying to a blistering dryness on the finish... A bit chalky on the finish as well... Limited carbonation throughout...
D - Wow, I'm sorry to say, but this one is a rather huge disappointment all the way around... Other than a very pleasing aroma, this on falls on its face in all other facets... The idea of Golden Monkey in wine barrels sounded rather promising, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired... I can not recommend as this one was a struggle to finish and a near drain pour... Sorry Victory - I love most of what you do, but this was a definite exception...

Pours from corked and caged bottle clear golden with a medium sized white head. Aroma is definitely some sour & vinegar (not expexted for me), but with the banana yeasty backdrop we expect from the style of the base beer. Some light creaminess like a chardonnay. Flavor is funky banana yeast up front with a dry oaky finish. The dryness and sweetness play well against one another. Light mouthfeel with medium to low carbonation. Good beer.
