I really disliked Golden Monkey, so not real sure why I picked this up, but guess I'm hoping the aging and barrel tweaks it in the right ways.
Pours a hazy golden color with a white head. Plead lace from its fluffiness. Aroma was lightly oak, but plenty oak tannins, yeast esters, and hints of white wine. The whine is faint, but really offsite the yeast notes. I think I hated the yeast in golden monkey. This isn't as bad. Taste is fruity and yeasty, with oak and figs, orange, lemon, and green grapes. Full body. Creamy. Not too carbonated.
Not bad. Definite improvement on the golden monkey!

Pours clear dark straw with a small off white head fading immediately leaving no lacing.
Aroma features chardonnay heavily. White wine, butter, some banana and a ton of oak. Spices come out more when warm.
Wow this is a mess. Some slight lemon/banana going on up front that is quickly overtaken by a huge astringent oak character. Tons of tannins with an unpleasant alcohol flavor. Big phenols all the way through and some spices show up after it warms to further muddy the flavor.
Medium mouthfeel. High carbonation.
One of the worst beers I've had in a while. This was a drain poured mess. Very aggressive flavors that do not mingle well. Waaaay over oaked and horribly astringent. This one needs to be retired.

Poured into a snifter. I absolutely hate Golden Monkey, so I don't have high hopes for this. Hopefully I'm wrong.
2.75 A: Murky golden brown color. Not a lot of off-white head formed and what did fell pretty quickly.
4.5 S: Well this is already an improvement over the Golden. The wine and especially the barrel come through quite well. Vinous white grape, vanilla, melon, and wildflowers. Oak and vanilla. Spicy peppery yeastiness. Hay, light fruits, honey. I don't know if Golden Monkey just needs time to develop or if the barrel makes this the way it is, but this smells wonderful and totally unlike the regular.
3.75 T: The taste isn't nearly as good as the nose, but it's still a helluva lot better than Golden Monkey. Again the barrel leads the way. White grape, melon, floral, vanilla, and oak. Peppery yeast, honey, honeydew. Again, it's good, but it's just missing the smoothness the nose has.
3.75 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good spritzy carbonation. Good here.
3.75 D: Infinitely better than Golden Monkey. I enjoyed this quite a bit. Give it a go if you see it.

A: Pours a golden yellow color with a fingers worth of head that slowly fizzles out to nearly nothing
S: Quite vinous and oaky, along with some fruity yeasty notes and malts. Pretty much like regular Golden Monkey with the aforementioned oak and vinous qualities
T: Starts off with the vinous wine-like qualities along with the fruity yeast. Goes into a light oak and malt for the finish. Slight alcohol mid-way and into the finish as well
M: Medium bodied with low-moderate carbonation. Soft and dry
O: A lot like Golden Monkey (obviously), but the wine characteristics definitely shine and stand out. Great price-point at $8.99 for a 750 mL C&C bottle as well. Recommended if you like the original or wine barrel-aged beers

A: This poured a cloudy gold with some sediment and moderate white head.
S: It smelled like banana and fresh wheat, with some oak and creamy bready yeast and nutty malt, and a hint of white grapes.
T: It tasted like lemongrass and fresh oak, with some waxy hops and banana nut bread. It had a clean bittersweet aftertaste.
M: It was slightly thick with moderate carbonation. Decent body.
D: This was an interesting beer. The oak barrel added to the light Belgian character, ending up a lot like a hefeweizen. Unexpected but not bad. The alcohol was well hidden and the finish was smooth, so it was easy to drink. Nice to try once, but not great.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass.
A- Pours a clean light amber color with a 1/4 inch white head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a sheer sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind on the glass.
S- Jeez, this beer reeks of Chardonnay and booze. Very effervescent but not in a good way. Some Belgian sweetness is finally derived after a few short sharp sniffs.
T- Tastes better than it smells. You can easily identify the base beer at first but then there's a white wine sweetness and dryness that lays over the palate and continues on into the aftertaste. Notes of the obvious white grape, oak and apple. You can taste every bit of the ABV.
M- Dry and sharp with an apparent booze bite. Medium carbonation and a light body.
O- This is not a good treatment for Golden Monkey IMO.
