I shan't bore you with a thousand word essay... This is a very good IIPA that is fairly easy to find. That may sound like an easy thing, but it's not. It borders on a top tier IIPA to me, but is it really? Everything is there but it's not quite up to the level of a fine handcrafted, dare I say, Vermont. top level IIPA. But with all things considered it is indeed a very good beer which is pushed up the beer meter even more because of its availability.... If you can't drink it, you can't taste it. In that regard, my friends, this good stuff.

12oz bottle poured into shaker. Appearance is clear light golden with off-white head that’s really sticky. Aroma is grapefruit, floral hops, grassy hops, light malts, and tropical fruit. Taste is initially sweet with honey and caramel then moderate grapefruit peel and herbal bitterness. Light to medium body, some stickiness in the texture, moderate carbonation, dry bitter finish.

Victory "Dirt Wolf"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "ENJOY BY: 07 JUN 2015 1230P"

I've enjoyed this beer many times on draught but I really don't like to write a review while I'm in a bar as there are too many distractions; and I haven't been finding it on tap recently so I thought I'd better just grab a case.

What I like about this double IPA, and pretty much any Victory beer, is that they like to keep things balanced and rounded. A lot of breweries would be OK with it if the malt stuck out, or the bitterness was a bit bold, if the alcohol had a brashness to it, or even if the hops overshadowed everything - but that's not the case here, everything works as one.

The pungent hops offer orange, lemon, tropical fruits (mayo, papaya) and mild grapefruit, as well as spice and soft pine backed by floral and even earthy notes (I'm thinking of a damp pine forest floor with rain water still dripping from the branches above); and although they hit you in the nose they don't run roughshod over the palate, instead they work within the grainy and lightly caramel & honey-ish malt to liven it - it becomes one flavor rather than eight different competing ones. It has focus, and the bitterness is solid and anchoring, but not bold; and the alcohol only adds a very subtle pinch that accentuates rather than detracts (important to have in a double IPA of almost 9%). Quite possibly the most impressive part is the finish, and to reference the name slightly, this double IPA "comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb" (and it might actually pair well with the earthy, barn-like flavors of lamb). I cannot recall an IPA² that it so smooth, suave, and supple in its exit - and in fact it's without question far more readily accessible than most standard IPAs.

So what do we have in the final conclusion? Drinkablility. It cannot be argued, this is a Lorelei of a beer, a "siren sweetly singing"; and she needs to be appreciated for her beauty, but recognized for her stealth and potential. Possibly the best double IPA on earth!

Fantastic!! Delicious hoppy hit with grapefruit and citrus notes and finishes so nice and clean. If you're looking at a line of taps and see this one, take it.
