16oz glass at Beer Rev in Oliver Square.
This beer appears a clear, rather dark reddish brown hue, with prominent cherry cola highlights, and one skinny finger of frothy, weakly foamy, and bubbly beige head, which leaves some generous drooping webbed lace around the glass as things slowly drop away.
It smells of biscuity, crackery bready pale malt, a bit of sugary caramel essence, flinty hard water, and earthy, leafy hops. The taste is semi-sweet caramel and bready malt, some pleasantly muddled Okanagan drupe fruitiness, faint earthy yeast, hints of neutered black coffee, oily bar-top nuts, and subtle weedy, leafy hops.
The carbonation is fairly unobtrusive in its low-key frothiness, the body medium-light in weight, and generally quite smooth. It finishes off-dry, certainly, the touched caramel malt still large and in charge, as the coffee, fruit, and even hop notes complete their swan dive into local obscurity.
Nice to see the students at Alberta's first brewing school so proficient right out of the commercial gate - this is indeed a commendable old-school brown ale, resplendent in the hallmarks of style - malty, nutty, and understated in its hoppiness. Looking forward to more in kind.
