Had on-tap at their downtown brewpub in Cape... Paired nicely with Buckner's infamous fried pickles, chips and fire-roasted salsa!
Colored with deep and rich hues of amber, touches of gold and glints of ruby in the sunlight, Buckner's Barleywine leans towards the darker side of barleywines. It's head is short-lived but the viscosity of this beer hints to its power.
A rich and complex aroma both intrigues and confuses the nostrils with its first hints of caramelized sugars, golden raisins and a bit of sour grape. Dark fruity sweetness permeates my glass. I imagine homemade caramel sauce with a touch of bourbon for good measure drizzled across a medley of figs and raisins.
A solid finish a bit on the dry side follows the first sip. Flavors of leather, sweet fresh tobacco and touches of grape all play nicely together. Everything is backed with that fantastic caramelized sugar flavor. I think this brew may have been a touch oxidized but, in a beer this big, it really just lends towards the prominence of golden raisins more so than lending anything towards perceived flaws.
This barleywine is a bit thinner than I prefer but complexity alone wins Buckner big points here. Sweet without being cloying and finishing with just the perfect dryness... This really is a good beer. Guess I'm taking a growler home of this seasonal.
Kudos, Buckner. This is a keeper.
