Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #38 (Mar 2010):

The eyes are drawn to its sizable head and alluring dark mahogany color. Ripe plum and currant fruitiness forces itself on the nose; peppery and wild herbs abound as well. Creamy smooth with a fluffy, moderate-sized body. Dry malt from front to back; a little beefy and bitty, with mineral and brown malt notes. Plums and raisins feign a quick sweetness, but the dryness tears that away. Powdery yeast and a quick sting of alcohol. Bone-dry finish leaves very little in the aftertaste.

Not as deep or complex as expected, very drinkable though. Worth a go.

Poured chilled in glasses

A: dark muddy chocolate color (like PG-tips ice tea); decent head; good lacing; good carbonation, good head retention
S: metallic and sour; no hops or yeast
T: prune and plum flavor dominates; metallic, thin-bodied; neither yeast nor hops a strong component; good carbonation makes the flavor lively; alcohol not detectable

A little bit disappointed, esp. with the World Beer Award insignia on the label.

Dated Feb '11

A - Murky brown with red and prune notes. Large off white head reduces fairly fast to ring. Lots cling.

S - Earthy. Clay and cooked fruits.

T - Bready, fruity, both cooked and a little juicy fruit. A bit of a sour backend that I don't really care for.

M - Great carb, medium to full body, ok balance. Finished already noted.

D - Once is good for this one.

Poured into a chilled La Trappe goblet. Label helpfully has tags punched at "February" and "2010." Almost four years old. Can it walk and talk? We shall see.

Appearance 4.0: Poured out a murky (i.e. opaque) dark brown with a nice 1/2" head. This faded into a frothy film on top that lasted the entire session. No lacing at all.

Smell 4.25: Very nice. Hints of acetone and poly-phenols as you draw in closer to the glass and then your olfactory glands get assaulted with this lovely raisin, dried fruit, dark malt and bright caramel bouquet. Just gorgeous.

Taste 4.0: Front is smooth and dry with hints of earthy tanins and deeply roasted grains. Middle is smooth and balanced, but with very little to add to the flavor profile. Maybe think of it as a "time out." Finish is a cacophony of tastes: dark malt, toasted grains, dried dark stonefruits, noble hops, figs...wow, it goes on and on. Aftertaste reflects these same tastes and then some and is long, appealing and delicious. You will definitely want another sip.

Mouthfeel 4.0: Balanced, refined and certainly enhances the taste of this brew.

Overall 4.0: This is another unique take on the standard Belgian Dark and it is nonetheless still outstanding. Balanced, smooth and very refreshing in spite of its big ABV, this beer is excellent for sessioning or simply trying the style. Definitely a "gateway" beer into the wider and more apocalyptic realm of Belgian Darks. The path hath been lain before you, pilgrim. Here there be...dragons.

Ugly dark purple/brown beer with a thin, fizzy head that quickly dissipates leaving no lacing behind. The fizzing is very loud, pours almost like a soda. Smells like sweet raisin bread with some caramel apple notes. Tastes sweet and fizzy, strong raspberry soda flavor that gives way to the more bready malt character that has hints of raisins, plums, dates. Tangy finish, surprisingly dry, scary drinkable for 9%. An unusual beer to me. As it warms it seems to get thicker with a dark cherry flavor and a stronger alcohol bite. The fizziness is very distracting and makes this seem almost like "beer soda".

Style/abv: dubbel/8%

Smell: subtle soy sauce with caramel and dark chocolate

Taste: black coffee, dark chocolate, orange zest, and coca cola--mild effervescence also occurs throughout

Pairs well buttery bread sticks, but I suppose everything does

*this is fairly odd and would dare the risk takers to try this beer with BBQ tri-tip
