While Double IPA's have become more common in Brazil, they still take some searching to find. If you're at Noi, you don't need to search, as they serve one of their own. On-tap at Noi São Francisco and served in a long stemmed glass, on to the beer:
That is one red DIPA. It's dark red color nearly goes into ruby brown, it's so dark. Topping it is an inch of creamy head. I smell it expecting an explosion of those green flowers, and I was shocked to receive a soft aroma. Not only that, but it smells more malty than hoppy. Vague fruit is noted as well. Where are the hops?
Let's get one thing clear, Amara is NOT a Double IPA. Where are the hops? To be fair, the taste itself is not bad. Fruity, smooth malt, so perhaps this is really an Imperial Red? The alcohol hits 10.5%, however it's hidden very well. The beer itself is smooth, full bodied, and does have an agreeable flavor.
Amara was a big reason why I decided to visit Noi, so it was dissapointing to taste what I did. Not a bad beer, just not your classic Double IPA.

Drinking on 02/18/2016. 600 ml bottle (exp. 01/2018), in a mug. Amber and clear liquid, with towering foam, leaving thick laces. Aroma and taste of citric fruits. This note may get somewhat overwhelming on mouth if drinking faster than normal. High alcohol is well hidden, showing as a nice spiciness. Moderate bitterness for what I expected. Medium body and pretty drinkable.

Hints of tobacco and resiny. Very good stuff!

Clear amber color with a thick off-white head with decent retention and leaving a wall of laces.
Nice aroma of lemony hops and caramel malt.
Flavor of caramel malt, heavy Sorachi hops (though it says American hops and elsewhere I saw Galaxy and Summit), mild not bothering soap, resin, pineapples and some herbal. Very dry aftertaste with a long lasting bitterness.
Light body with appropriate carbonation. It is really hard to believe that this is 10.5% abv.
What a great local surprise. A bitter and refreshing DIPA that is not overly sweet with tons of bittering and lemony hops. One of the rare local decent alternatives for American equivalents.
