Refined Fool Brewing Co. "Ripsnorter"
11.53 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, seemingly without freshness dating or production codes
$3.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: The body is a very dark brown, basically black, beneath a two-finger thick head of tan foam. The aroma reveals dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and a very light note of vanilla. It's clean and welcoming. On to the flavor... it's not as chocolaty as the aroma suggests it will be but there's a very nice nuttiness to it, and then a slight edge of roastiness in the finish that eventually fades to leave behind some of the vanilla. A median bitterness backs it and although it's rich it still finishes mainly dry. Nicely balanced! In the mouth it's medium bodied with a bit of a dextrinous feel, and smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. It's a rich and strong beer that deserves to be treated as such. It would make a great after dinner sipper, and not because of the vanilla, which only adds a hint of character - it's not what you'd think of as a dessert beer. It could use some better head retention and lacing but beyond that it's pretty solid.

11.5 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, caramel, toffee, fudge, dark bread, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of bourbon, molasses, dark fruit, leather, smoke, char, and roast/oaky earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, vanilla, and bourbon/oak chip notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, caramel, toffee, fudge, dark bread, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of bourbon, molasses, dark fruit, leather, smoke, char, and roast/oaky earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, caramel, toffee, fudge, dark bread, toasted oak, bourbon, smoke, char, light molasses, and roast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, vanilla, and bourbon/oak chip flavors; with a nice roasted bitter/sweet and oak spiciness balance. Light-moderate dryness from roast/char bitterness and oak spiciness, increasing through the glass. Slight acrid/tannic astringency, but not overwheming. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky/velvety, and lightly sticky/chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Mildly warming 8.7%. Overall this is a very nice oak aged vanilla imperial porter style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, vanilla, and bourbon/oak chip flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. There’s not a huge bourbon presence, but it’s solid. Plenty of oak and vanilla, but never overpowering. Very well rounded in complexity. A very enjoyable offering.

I'm not sure whether this is a good beer that needs improvement, or if it's a lesser beer that is at its peak. Ripsnorter looks nice, brown/black in appearance with a nice solid head. The head breaks slowly and there is decent lacing. The smell is roasts, a hint of bourbon and no vanilla present which is odd as it is advertised as a vanilla porter. The taste is roasts and and a touch of oak, but there is an underlying sour bitterness that takes away from this beer. This also affects the feel, which while seems about right for a porter, there is an astringency that is not great.
Again, not sure where to put this beer. Maybe an off batch, perhaps I will revisit and see if I get the same results.

Appearance: It has a nice dark brown color to it. It has a nice bubbly tan head that dies down moderately fast and leaves next to no lacing.
Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted malts, chocolate, light coffee, some sweet caramel/toffee, faint vanilla and very slight bourbon in the back.
Taste: Like the aromas, it has some roasted malts, light chocolate and coffee, faint caramel and perhaps some dark fruit and molasses.
Mouthfeel: It has a med-high carbonation with a somewhat thin overall balance and feel.
Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by decent flavors and aromas. I was really hoping the bourbon would come through more. It's still a decent offering but I feel it could definitely use more time in the barrels.

A decent effort but there is plenty of room to improve.
The base porter is decent enough, with some chocolate and roast notes present. The barrel flavours are there but are quite muted; seemingly a very short aging period on this one and it would have benefited from more time in the barrel. The mout feel was extremely thin as well.
