Sludge on the rim of the bottle and in the bottle. Still as a swamp in the glass. Dark nasty brown. Mudcake coming out of the bottle with floaties and not lacing.
Aroma of licorice, leather and rootbeer.
Cinamon and brown sugar. More licorice. A shocking whole lot of bitterness but it is refined. The wood bark aftertaste is what knocks down the flavor to below average.
A lot of courseness on the back of the tonge.

Viscous purple brown, swamp with no head and no movement from the heavy body. Got me believing it would put me to sleep as the name suggests. Smell is pungently sweet prunes and fermenting red fruits, with some spices, cinnamon, and an ample hop background. Alcohol whiffs.
Taste in the fore of the mouth is fruity black cherry, thick and smooth. I was reminded of drinking Pepto Bismal. Chewy bitterness and dark chocolate hops arrive floating off the black cherry to take over and dominate the palate. Amazing texture to this brew. Notes of nuts and flour. Heavy body indeed, but highly drinkable and the 11% is hard to locate after the initial whiffs. Becomes yet more drinkable as it warms.
This is the 1996 batch of barley wine from Ezo. I was told they hope it to be best after 10 years, so I guess it's getting there. The new edition is already aging, to be released in 2010. The Japanese name of this barley wine is "Nezake Beer", meaning basically "nightcap".
